Root

Or perhaps it didn't root. I have Superuser and Titanium Backup working on the phone but I still get a "$" in adb shell and it doesn't ask for superuser permission when connected to my PC. Frustrating!

Titanium backup will tell you if you have root, when you launch the app or on the apps landing page.

Excellent instructions + vid... thanks

It was my very first root, (my very first android phone)... after downloading all of the required stuff, it took me about 10 mins. Very helpful.

Hello, this is pretty much my first try at forum, I have the LG Optimus S and I got it rooted, to where it does show the # but when I try to pm setInstallLocation 2 it says
[1] Killed pm setInstallLocation 2

Here is what I did:

C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb shell
$ su
su
# pm setInstallLocation 2
pm setInstallLocation 2
[1] Killed pm setInstallLocation 2
#

tried manual method twice, got $ both times
used z4root

followed
adb shell [enter]
$ su [enter] (look at phone right when you hit enter and select "always allow")
#

and got the #, guess i'm rooted, will post back here if i run in to problem when flashing rom.

I'm tryint ot root using the steps in the OPs 1st post. I downloaded the Java client and installed it. Then downloaded the Android SDK and it won't install telling me I don't have Java installed. I installed the version in the link. Are the OP's instructions not up to date?

i have gotten all of the way towards getting to the first command after getting command prompt to the tools folder, then the adb is not recognized as a command

Same thing for me. Obviously the instructions in the OP are out of date and things have changed since then.

Yes. However, in step 3 it states, open the SDK manager. When I do this it pops up a box asking me to chose a package to install? There are a crap-load of them listed. Which one do I select? It's not stated in the instructions.

You actually can ignore that step. ADB is in \tools already. You do not need anything from the SDK manager.

Okay I've gotten into step 4. However, when I watched the help video the guy mentioned first off having a $ prompt and then a # prompt. Mine were both # prmopts. Does this matter?

Okay I've officially rooted my Optimus. At least I think I did. lol I downloaded SU and Titanium from the market and they both seem to work.

Now I need to figure out what to dow tih a rooted phone. I really want to free up space to install more apps. Should I do the auto recovery thing now?

I recommend installing ThundeROM. You'll get 150mb of free space: http://forum.androidcentral.com/lg-optimus-s-roms-hacks/45401-rom-thunderom-v1-5-12-14-2010-a.html

I'll look into ThundeROM. I'm not a computer guru so I'm alittle concerned about bricking my phone or not being able to revert to the default phone state. I've seen how much the phones benchmarking can improve from installing a ROM but is there a way I can increase the clock speed of the phone or enable JIT without flashing a ROM?

Also, I've seen where I should not accept OTA updates while I'm rooted. How can I disable OTA updates? I've looked in settings but can't seem to find it.

everytime i get to the part when you need to get a # instead of $ i get the the $ sign everytime. ive tried 20 times.
please help
thanks
