How to Root

Just an update for Cory and Dirrk:

I just tried rooting with the (new?) one click root method for the PC...and it worked! I am a rooted sum*****!

Thanks, fellas. Much respect.

I'm a droid newb and got my Samsung two days ago and just finished the one click root. Was about a 3min wait after the first reboot before it finished. Longest 3min of my life. Thanks for the post and the hard work to make it easy for us.

Again, I'm sure the one click root is easy, but how on earth is one supposed to know what ROMs are good? Aren't there like a million out there? I'm just so overwhelmed. I'd love to do it but have no direction. :(

It's the same for me. How are you supposed to know which one to pick? :p

I am attempting to switch out Bing voice search for Google by following these directions: http://www.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-google-search-fix

I was able to root successfully but I can't figure out how to rename the apk file in this step: "Go to /system/app and rename I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.apk to I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.old".

Is this done from a command line on the computer or on the phone? I don't see /system folder on the PC. I can view it on the phone using Rootexplorer but there isn't an option to rename. Any help would be appreciated.

I know this question's been asked, but I'm wondering about rooting and the possible Froyo update sometime in the hopefully near future: would it be recommended to root now, or wait until after the update and root, or not root at all and just wait for the update? This is my first droid so I'm quite unfamiliar with the Android world and would like some advice.

Also, if rooting now would be preferable, I've already downloaded Verizon's most recent update, the I500.DI01 patch. I've read above about several cases of people already rooted having problems after updating. Will the one click root work if this update has already been installed?

Thanks a lot in advance for anyone who can help!

1-click worked great !

I'm a brand new android user coming from a Storm 1. Had my phone for 3 days and was on the fence about rooting, but couldn't take the Bing hijacks any longer. After the second try (didn't mount the phone first time) the 1-click method worked like a charm, and this is AFTER my device was carrier updated. I'm now Bing free and able to use my phone the way I want!! THANKS GUYS...:D

So yes I was slightly hesitant initially to root, but I went ahead and did it anyways, I figure the Froyo update problems will be figured out whenever that comes around. Worked great, first try, no problems. Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Just confirmed wireless tethering works as well. Great addition to have too, thanks.

This can be done through the command line i believe as long as your rooted. Much easier to download root explorer and just go to the folder long press and hit rename

For a Noob who is kind of freaked out about rooting, can someone please explain the instructions on how to unroot and what all that jargon means.

I've rooted my phone, was fairly simply after I figured out how. Coming from the Droid Incredible, I've noticed the Wireless Tethering speeds are considerably slower than the DI. Signal strength isn't what it was on the DI either. Think there will be a radio update whenever we get Froyo?
