How to Root

I get how to go the 1 click root method. Should I wait until 2.2 comes out or risk doing it now? People run tons of different things, I assume they're all themes? How would I know which one would suit my needs? And can someone tell me what a kernel is?

The root method will work on 2.2 aswell so it really doesnt matter. I believe there are only two different roms out atm so I am not sure what themes are even availible yet. Again I believe its a personal preference but you should find who is making these themes or roms and check to see if they would help you. google linux kernel or android kernel. I dont really have a great explination because its hard to tell someone who doesnt know alot about computers what it does. But basically it controls your software & hardware it is the backbone to your computers OS.

Are kernals necessary for rooting? Really, the main reason why I want to root is just to improve its performance, customize it aesthetically with a theme, and get clockwork recovery. I'm not very savvy with the lingo, but I really am trying to learn what it's all about so I can do it.

Feels great, like my horse if finally out of the gate. It was a great learning experience, so i have one last knowledge seeking question. I altered the batch file like you said, because my device did not have su/Superuser.apk/busybox on the sdcard and rage.bin in /data/local/tmp and it worked like a charm i am rooted once more. I am still fuzzzy with adb, so is chmod 0775 only for pushing the rage.bin to the internal phone memory, in this case to the specified: /data/local/tmp and chmod 4775 for pushing stuff to the sd card? I have to prob following the steps just curious. And thanks for all the detailed steps before!

Does anyone know why, this keeps happening?

chmod is short for change mode and it changes who has access to a file and what they can do with it.
chmod 0755 file changes means that no special permissions are required ie 0, 7 that the owner of the file can read, write, execute the first 5 means anyone in the owners group can read and execute and the last 5 means anyone else can read and execute. the 4755 is the same except that 4 sets it to a specific userid which in our case would be the superuser aka root. These modes are binary modes and very easy to deciepher.
ie 7 in binary = 111 each bit stands for a different mode read, write, execute if you want to see what i mean open up adb again and type adb shell ls -l
you will see a list like such
-rwxr-xr-x file1
0 | 111 | 101 | 101 = First zero isnt the same as used in chmod but everything else is
0 7 5 5

hope that cleared it up

Dirrk,

Much thanks for your tutorial! I'm now rooted :) I don't mean to sound ignorant but what does your benchmark score consist of? I'm using Quadrant and ran it a couple times only find my scores are only 899. How do i get 2K+ scores like i've seen on some posts? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

The root instructions were great and it seems to have worked.

How do I now nuke Bing and replace it with google?

my cmd keeps closing after i push any key to continue.... It says abd is not recognized by command just befor it closes out... PLZ HELP

Yeah, I actually have not Idea at this point why we would root and what it's for. Just need a little root 101.

But from what I've read, I need to do this to "Google" my phone.

Check out this article.

If I could sum rooting up in 2 bullet points:

  • Provides access to folders within the OS that are normally locked from user access. If you own a PC - imagine if every time you tried to access c:\windows, you got a permission denied message. It's sort of the same in Android, and rooting unlocks the door so you can get in.
  • The reason you would want to do this, is so you can remove bloatware, install programs that require root, and potentially install custom ROM's or other system enhancements.

I've rooted my phone and now when I attempt to install the D101 update it fails by continually restarting. It's annoying that everyday I have to delay the update another 24 hrs in order to prevent the cycle of constant restarts.

Has anybody else experienced this? Has anyone else found a fix?

Thanks!

P.S.: What do you guys think about this: http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-continuum-video-hands
Would you trade-in your fascinate for the Continuum if you're still in the 30-day trial period?

so when i try to unzip this it tells me its unable to do so because the file is damaged... also my antivirus tells me it has a trojon on it when i download it what gives ???

Try the unsigned update I posted here.

http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/36287-unsigned-update-need-cwm.html

There's going to be very little dev support with the Continuum from what I can tell. It's similar enough to the fascinate that some stuff may work on it, but that second small screen more than likely will not work.

Ok so I'm getting the Device not found like 6 times after the phone reboots what does that mean lol ?? also does this need to be placed on the ROOT of my sd card or just ran after i unzip it ?

I'm going to go ahead and say this method will not work anymore since the last update to DIO1... unless otherwise I guess I'll be waiting for 2.2... sad the lag is so bad on this phone with out the fix.
