[How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows)

Hi, everybody. Noob here. Apologies for the baby questions.

I don't even have my Evo yet, but I'm trying to prepare myself so I can quickly get it rooted and (perhaps) ROM'd in the few days I'll have prior to heading off on vacation. :p God knows I wouldn't want to be stuck in Hawaii with a 30 FPS app drawer! The horror.

The OP is very helpful, and I think I'm understanding all the steps. I'm still a little confused about what I will want to do after step 12, however. That's beyond the scope of this thread, I figure, but I was hoping that someone could point me to some resources that would explain what happens next.

Here's the section of the OP that confuses me:
You now are on the stock 2.1 build of Android! (Read: nice friendly rootable build of android)

Step 12: Now that you are back to 2.1, you Should be able to use any 2.1 w/ OTA root method you wish. I have listed those methods below.

Before rooting I recommend deleting the files that were pushed to your sd card in "Step 6:".

2.1 w/ OTA rooting methods.
Unrevoked
Simple Root
Link The original by SteelH of XDA

I strongly recommend that you should immediately install a rooted 2.2 stock rom. HERE at XDA

And do a nandroid backup.

Then go about flashing to your hearts content.

Okay, my questions:

Do I understand correctly that when I reach step 12, I will be running an un-rooted version of 2.1? The root permissions I received after performing the airplane-mode exploit were only temporary?

Is there a recommended method for rooting 2.1? Is "Simple Root" any better than "Unrevoked", or vice-versa?

After getting root again, and installing the "rooted 2.2 stock rom", will I basically be back to where I was when I got my phone, except rooted?

I keep hearing about nandroid, but I'm not sure what it is, or what it does. Can somebody point me to a noob-friendly primer?

And then I guess I'll need to learn about about how to actually flash ROMs. I better start looking for a discussion of that. Initially, I figured that rooting would be simple, and flashing would be more complicated, but at this point I'm really hoping I got that backwards!

Thanks again for the detailed guide. And sorry again about my newb confusion.

1. At step 12 you will not be rooted. Just at stock 2.1 You will need to use one of the 2.1 rooting methods. I recommend SimpleRoot.

2. Answered above.

3.Yes.

4. Not sure how to best answer this. Think of Nand as all the files on your phone. If you were to make a nandroid backup you are essentially copying all your system files to a different location. If anything were to go wrong you could restore from that backup.

5. Flashing a rom is usually pretty easy. Most ROMs will include instructions on how to flash them.

Thanks, Luce. I appreciate you treading that well-traveled ground again for me. :)

I found this info thread up in the Hacking sub-forum. It appears to be a good low-level explanation of the basics of... well, all of this stuff. I figured I'd include a link here for the next clueless newbie that is enticed into this thread! :p

Banging head on this one. I need to go, I have to buy a new car for my wife. When I get back I am going to make a video showing this. Zero byte transfer in the command line but..... wallah files on sd card.

what kind of SDcard are you using? is it SDHC?

is this process the same for going back to 2.1 from a rooted 2.2??

if you're already rooted then you can flash a 2.1 ROM if that is what you're looking for. if you're looking to go back to stock 2.1 then a RUU is what you want, but i am not sure if it will allow it without following the steps to revert.

I've read through this and a couple other threads and I think I'm just confusing myself more.

Here's what I'm gathering is the list of steps I need to do.

1) Follow these instructions, back to 2.1 (will this lose any data on the phone?)
2) Root
3) Nandroid backup
4) Install a rooted 2.2 ROM

If I want
5) Wipe
6) Install any ROM I want

Is that right? I think I have the individual steps down, just not sure when to do what.

hmmm, kind of backwards in a couple places. remove step 4 completely because the wipe is so you can install any ROM you want. which could be a 2.2 ROM. also, the nandroid backup is the backup your current phone settings and won't be useful until after you have completed everything.

and yes, you will lose all your data. but it's a small price to pay. also, it can be partially avoided by using the backup utilities out there like mybackup pro and astro.

I have no idea why this worked but out of frustration I decided to rename the PC36IMG file. My evo would not recognize the PC36IMG on reboot I decided to rename the the file PC36IMG.zip and bam it flashed! I am on 2.1 now going back to finish easy root method. I have never had this problem before, have no clue why renaming the file worked but it did. Just posting this in case someone else has the same problem.

Edit: BTW it is obvious now that even though the command prompt showed zero byte transfer, the files did go through.

So nandroid is like a complete backup but can only be done after rooting?

Yep

Yep. I just finished rooting and flashed my nan backup from the EVO I returned under warranty. Its like I have my old phone back just without the blown speaker :)

No need to unroot, you just don't have the google apps installed, pm me and I'll email them too you if you'd like, or you can search around and find em, they have ben mirrored everywhere at XDA

I picked up my EVO on June 4th and have only had one OTA. THe first one that fixed the problem with the SD card. My software version number is 1.32.651.6.

It appears that this method takes you back to 2.1. I can still run the original unrevoked that gives you a temporary root (you lose it if you reboot).

If I run unrevoked, can start from there?

Do I need to run the OTA first and then start from there?

Should I just start from step 1 regardless and do all of the steps?

Love this forum. Thanks in advance for any help.
