[How To] Unroot and return to stock [RUU Method]

you dont have to be rooted to run the RUU.

Hi liquid,

I'm trying to flash the Sprint stock RUU over the current Myn Warm 2.2 ROM. I'm running into all kinds of corners. The phone is unrooted (the bootloader says "S-ON"), yet I keep getting the USB fault message when I try to run the RUU. Can you run the RUU without the SD card installed? I've tried all kinds of downloads and I'm getting nowhere. Any help would be great. Thanks.

First, S-ON doesn't mean that you are unrooted. If you have a custom ROM installed, then you are rooted.

I could never get the RUU to work. I got the USB error no matter what I did. I tried it on 2 different computers and every USB port on both of them.

Give this a try:

[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS - xda-developers

Since you have S-ON, you should be able to start at step #8.

users, have been reporting USB issues. This could be due to drivers or to the actual phones. Unfortunately since i have unrooted numerous times using my method, i have no diffinative way to prove anything.

That beings said, the method posed directly above does work, provided one can follow directions and navigate a bit.

I will encorperate it into my method some time in the near future.

Thank you kd0axs!

For some reason my computer wont let me run the RUU file. Do you have any idea what I should do?

What happens when you run the RUU? Do you have HTC sync installed as well and did you installed the USB driver for unrevoked?

IMO - the RUU works best when only the HTC sync drivers have been installed.

Well, I didn't follow the directions. If I did, I would have never gotten the RUU to work. So in order to get the RUU to work this is what I did.

1. Turn on USB Debugging.

2. Put the phone back to S-ON. Download unrevoked-forever-son.zip from unrevoked's website here:

unrevoked-forever-son.zip

And flash the zip from Recovery. If you are using Amon RA Recovery, the zip file must be in the root of your SD Card. If you're using Clockworkmod Recovery just navigate to it via the menu.

Once complete, restart your phone.

2. Now that your phone has security back on (S-ON) and RUNNING. Download the RUU for your specific phone from shipped-roms.com here:

HTC Evo RUUs

3. Double-click the RUU and keep pressing next. You're unrooted and back to stock.

ok... you guys are probably tired of all of us noobs but.... holy mother of christ why does this have to be so difficult?!?!

ok... I think I rooted my phone. I followed the instructions on the [How to] Rooting HTC EVO Froyo 2.2 (Windows) thread to the letter without any hiccups... up to step 12... I didnt do any of the OTA root methods.

But then I wasn't sure how to do the nandroid backup thing... I then tried to flash the myn warm 2.2... and then I thought about unrooting... so.... pretty much I don't what the hell I have.

my phone looks how it does when I first got it and the firmware say 2.1- update 1... how can I tell if I've rooted my phone or not. and second am I closer to rooting my phone than unrooting?

I think all I did was downgrade my evo to 2.1 without rooting but I'm not sure... I want to know if there is any way to confirm if I've rooted anything. I got home from work at 3am and haven't slept because of this.

You are on 2.1 unrooted. Do the simple root method, its really simple, and we can help you out with it.

Did you make sure you have the correct hboot for that method?

And don't worry, we don't mind helping out.

I am confused

I rooted my EVO 4G and installed CM 6. I have been trying to get my phone back to stock and unrooted. I have read through this thread several times and tried everything in it. I do not know what I am doing wrong but can someone help me and give me some guidance to return my phone back to stock. Thans

I'm pretty sure I have hboot-0.79.0000... I'm going to try the simple root when I get home. In doing so, I wont have to flash a nandroid or clockwork recovery right? it should be built in... correct?

No, a nandroid is a type of backup is of your whole system and its a all or nothing type of deal. It will be on there, packaged with a recovery.

Clockwork recovery is put on there automatically I believe, if not its in the extras tab after your done.

So... for nandroid is there something I need to install before I do the simple root? or is it after? I guess I'm just confused on the nandroid backup thing. when do I do it and how? or is it even necessary?

Nandroid is a function of the recovery that will be automatically flashed.

Yes reboot.

Format your SD card (after you back it up to your PC) and try again.

You're on 2.1-update1 right?

yes, I'm on 2.1update1.

How and what do I back it up to my pc? and how do I format the SD card? from hboot?

No to back it up, just mount your storage/sd to your pc, it should prompt you on the type of connection when you plug it in to the PC.

To format it, go to settings>SD&phone storage>unmount>format

You can also format it from your PC,right clicking it gives options i think.

no luck... it still says

main version is older
update fail
do u want to reboot
y
n

on my pc it says

/sdcard/flash_image: Permission denied
