[How To] Unroot and return to stock [RUU Method]

Does this work if I've used the newest unrevoked as well? I'd like to root properly and get rid of unrevoked.

I believe it does yes with the only exception being if you used unrevoked forever in which case i think theres extra steps you must take.

Also, is there something wrong with your phone? The reason I'm asking is because, assuming you have root (SU returns a "#"), and assuming you have NAND unlocked (hboot shows s-off) you have everything you're gonna get from any other way of rooting with the exception of the eng h-boot .76 (used for flashing CM ROMs) which we can get you instructions on how to get that without unrooting.

I would just hate for you to go through this work because of some sort of misconception. If you want to do it as an exercise thats fine but as long as you have root and nand unlocked, eng h-boot is easy to achieve.

Cheers!

Thanks guys!

@KSmith: I used Unrevoked3, not forever. And nothing's wrong with the phone at all, I love it, but I only used the easy way to root because I needed to do it that particular day. Now I would like to unroot and do it the proper way.

I've followed the steps so many times but no luck, it won't connect through USB. Should I be selecting an option in the skating android logo page?
thanks!

Update: When I select "recovery" from the white screen, the RUU pops right up on the computer and the phone goes to the HTC screen with the green text. Am I safe to proceed? Thanks!

Thanks - I'll give this one a try. It does look like I have uncommon_evo in a folder on my SD card. In other news, the guy told me he actually will un-root the phone for me when he's back in town and to leave him alone foever. He's got nandroid in a folder on my SD card and this uncommon evo so perhaps I should let him do his thing.
Once it's un rooted, is it safe to format the SD card and start fresh.
Also, any advise for TOTAL 100% NOOB on how to root a phone?

Thanks

I can get it to do all the steps everytime but when it says waiting for bootloader it takes forever.. i think i wited 20 minutes the one time

You mean the computer won't recognize your phone or htc sync won't find it?

Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk Pro

well i could sync it with htc sync, it said evo 4g, but it remains disconnected while on bootloader, and i just keep getting that usb connection crap.

its not working.

it find the zip but it says its wrong image or something :(

EDIT,

i went through that thread, re downloaded a updated pc136 file that someone recently posted on page 20 i think and used that and it found it...

in the process now...

ok
issue.

it found it, i hit yes, all it did was update the bootloader, it does now say s on and ship instead of eng.

but the phone doesnt physically restart?

OK,
heres what i did to get everything to work.

i downloaded that pc136 file from page 20 of the thread, i ran it, it said it updated the bootloader and then re started, but then went right back to bootloader. i thought i was stuck.
so what i did was then load the RUU on the computer while it was on the bootloader screen, which did find my phone and restored it to stock, brand new...

so if anyone is having issues with either way.
1: Download pc136 file posted on megaupload from here.
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

2:Place that file you downloaded on your SD card.

3.Reboot into bootloader, it will find the file, hit yes to load it.

4. when its done and the phone goes to the skating android screen, make sure it is connected to your usb on your pc, once that is done, open the latest RUU file, follow the on screen prompts, it will look for your phone, find it and ask if u want to update from 1.47 to the newest 3.29, hit yes. then let it do its thing.

5. onces it done, your all done, fresh, fully stock phone, ready for sprint or whatever else.

So, your phone must be rooted in order to flash the RUU?

Then after the RUU is installed, you then unroot the phone?
