HTC 10 Owners: First Impressions, Initial Reviews Thread

Re: HTC 10 owners first impressions/review thread

Any chance you can get an antutu score?

Re: HTC 10 owners first impressions/review thread

Eh, I'm sure there are other sites that have that information, sorry.

Anyone else have the HTC 10? Feel free to post your impressions/review.

A really preliminary screenshot. If that's not your cup of tea no worries.

Re: HTC 10 owners first impressions/review thread

Snapdragon 820 is a known entity at this point. Antutu scores will be very similar to all the other phones with the same SOC.

And the fact that it honestly doesn't matter one bit in day to day use. I have no clue why people care what something benchmarks. Either it's fast and works or it doesn't.

New Owner, First Impression

Boom Sound is dead, WTF did they do to their signature feature? Yikes my mono speaker LG V10 sounds richer and fuller. Hoping headphone output lives up to the hype.

I am also planning to buy the HTC 10. I currently have a Nexus 6P which I really love, but I prefer HTC's design and build quality. The only thing I will be missing are the regular updates, but HTC is pretty good in delivering timely updates (but not as fast as Google is).

Going to a smaller display from the Nexus 6P might be something that I will not like. How does it feel? Does it make a difference, or is it something you forget about after a day or two of using the device?

As the owner of a g4 the HTC m9 was a serious beast with the headphones on and boom sound playing, everything else about the phone was forgettable but I miss that one area.

I like the 10 but honestly I'm not hyped about it enough to get one. After going back to larger phones I can't do anything under 5.4.

Props for all the early adopters.

Re: HTC 10 owners first impressions/review thread

Nice review :) I've went from the S7 edge to the G5 - was really hoping to hold out until the next Nexus is released, but the M10 looks really tempting. How does it compare in hand to the likes of the M7, M8 & M9 (whichever one you've previously had)

I went the other way around. I was using the S7 as a temp phone until the G5 came out and I ended up getting the G5. However, for me at least, after using the s7 for a bit before getting the G5, i missed a lot of what Samsung offered so I traded my G5 for the S7 Edge.

Are you happy with your decision to drop the S7E to get the G5? I do miss certain things about the G5, mainly the wide-angle lens. Just curious how you felt about the transition.

Re: HTC 10 owners first impressions/review thread

Anyone else get a thank you email from HTC saying to be on the lookout for a package in the next couple weeks? Wonder what that's gonna be. The headphones we should have gotten in the US maybe?

This is the email... Should have screenshot in the first place

I haven't had enough time to put the 10 through its paces yet, but already I'm very impressed. The build quality is top notch. Screen brightness and colour depth are quite pleasing. The sound is a solid step up from the M8. My ringtone is the opening theme to "Sherlock", and it has wonderful presence and tone. The interface is snappy. It's nice not having a load of useless bloATT-ware slowing things down!

Owww, that's a great idea. The Sherlock ring tone. Will have to take a look for that.

Like Me Wolfe I haven't had enough time on the phone yet. That said my initial impressions are positive. Phone feels very responsive even while it was downloading all my apps. The phone did get hot during that, but it is normal.
Screen seems fine to me, and I am coming from the sgs7e. I will give it a try tomorrow in the bright FL sunshine.
Build quality is excellent, as I would expect from HTC. Feels great in my hand and the size is just fine for one handed use. The phone is a little longer and wider than the M8.
The fingerprint scanner is top notch. Better than the sgs7e in my opinion. I have been having several misfits with the S7 of late. I also like that I don't have to turn on the phone first.

That's all I have for now. Will use this phone for 2 weeks and see how I feel against the S7.

I look forward to reading your impressions. Part of me feels I'm missing out by not going with the Samsung or holding out for the new nexus.

S7 Edge to HTC 10 - First Impressions are mixed.

I have both phones sitting in front of me, so I'll just give you guys the real review.

SPEED:
The HTC 10 is like a Ferrari compared to my S7E, which is just interface lag and can have huge lag spikes in general around day to day usage. Tap something in the menu, wait 1 second for it to respond. Samsung is lag city while the HTC 10 rarely hiccups.

In processor intensive tasks, like website loading or games, they are basically the same.

Fingerprint sensor is 100% faster than S7E.

HOWEVER, the Camera is SLOW. Like slower to focus, slower to capture, and slower shot to shot. Ugh?

DISPLAY:

It's dimmer, maybe 50% dimmer. That's not a deal breaker, but the viewing angles may be. This is an IPS display but almost seems like a PVA display in color and brightness loss when viewed even slightly off angle. Disturbing.

Colors are good and fine. Screen has a pink tint but is fairly even. Sadly, this feels like a significant cost cutting measure by HTC.

Also, I have a spec of dust in one corner on my display. Oh well.

OTHER?

Camera is adequate, not concerned. More annoyed that is slower than I'm used to in the iPhone 6S and S7/S6

HEAT - this thing is 4 degrees Celsius hotter than the S7Edge. CPU-Z reports battery temp at 40C during heavy load, while my S7E caps around 36C and sometimes goes to 38C while charging.

BUILD is AWESOME, IN hand feel is WAY better, size is honestly PERFECT.

SPEAKER SOUND is GOOD, while S7 Edge I would say S7E speaker is POOR.

Reception seems about the same, maybe slightly worse than S7E. Sitting next to each on Verizon network.

Am I keeping this phone? I thought for sure I would. It cost me $550 + $20upgrade + tax. I really wish the display was more useable off center (this could be an issue using it as navigation in the car). The phone runs a lot hotter than the S7 Edge (idles @ 32C, while the S7 idles at 24C-26C). It's got a smaller battery. But it is 1000% smoother and faster in day to day usage.

It's definitely not perfect, and the camera speed and display quality is definitely more disappointing than I thought it would be.

Re: S7 Edge to HTC 10 - First Impressions are mixed.

Review the camera again after the big update is available, but I have the same concerns about the camera. My phone seems fine temp wise. It did get hot when it was downloading all my apps.

A few things had started to annoy me with the SGS7e of late. The fingerprint scanner was having quite a few misreads and that was really starting to get annoying. Also, my fingers keep touching the edge screen which caused the phone to do things I didn't want it to.

They are obviously both great phones and I don't think you can really go wrong with either. Other people have complained about lag with the Sammy and if I am being honest I think I experienced my first bit of lag today, but it was minor.

Re: S7 Edge to HTC 10 - First Impressions are mixed.

Had the S7E just can't get used to dated Samsung UI (need more refinement).

Using the HTC 10 and just holding feels so much better than S7E. Camera is definitely better and faster on s7 along with waterproof features. Display sure S7 is better but HTC 10 is great as well. If you want an all round great feeling smooth feeling phone without carrier crap get the unlocked HTC 10.

Boom Sound is dead, WTF did they do to their signature feature? Yikes my mono speaker LG V10 sounds richer and fuller. Hoping headphone output lives up to the hype.
I wouldn't say boomsound is dead, just different. The sound quality out of the speakers is really quite good and the volume is loud as well. The lows in music come out from the woofer at the bottom and the highs come out from the top which does sound kind of cool, but being a phone there's not enough differentiation or distance between the two to really enjoy the setup.

So while it's not dual front-facing speakers, is probably the next best thing. Also there's no risk of not hearing music/videos by accidentally covering up the bottom speaker. You'll still hear everything which is great, because other, bottom-mounted single speaker setups can be instantly muted by having a finger cover up the grilles.

Going to a smaller display from the Nexus 6P might be something that I will not like. How does it feel? Does it make a difference, or is it something you forget about after a day or two of using the device?

More comfortable for a few reasons:

- The curvature of the back is very comfortable in the hand.

- The chamfered edges add additional grip for your fingers

- Being a smaller phone, you don't have to reach as far to access parts of the screen. I can comfortably pull down the notification shade with my thumb, which I couldn't do on the 6P as I hold my phone's with my pinky finger underneath the phone to support it.

So I find it more comfortable. The smaller screen size doesn't really affect me. I can still see what I need to see, still able to do what I need to do with ease. The build quality if the HTC 10 is of higher quality than the 6P. The metal feels better and the phone feels more solid.

If you're unsure about the size, check it out at a store before you decide.

Eh, I chickened out and canceled my 10 preorder yesterday. Going to stick with my Note 5 until something better comes along. I just know Samsung's screens are so much brighter and accurate (on basic mode). I use my phone as a GPS and drive around all day with polarized sunglasses on. I don't know if I could deal with a dim screen that is basically unusable with shades on. I just can't see moving to the 10 at full price, even with the $100 discount. Maybe I'll pick one up on Swappa sometime.

A lot of owners seem mixed and kinda underwhelmed. That made me super nervous so I bailed.
