HTC 10 Owners: First Impressions, Initial Reviews Thread

Re: S7 Edge to HTC 10 - First Impressions are mixed.

For me, it's strange to see people say this as I rarely every want/need my phone at max brightness. I'm usually wanting it to be comfortable to look at in indoor lighting (which the S7E wasn't for me). It's good we all have choices to suit us though. I hope HTC does well because competition in the marketplace is ultimately a blessing to the customers.

Indoors, sure, it's at maybe 50%. In the car, in full sunlight, in the summer, in the desert with sunglasses on? That's what matters...to me at least. I kinda need to see the display.

I'm sure the 10 will sell good. We need another formidable competitor. I just don't understand why they used a dim non polarized friendly display. Surely they tested it outdoors with shades on in direct sunlight? They couldn't have come away from that test impressed.

Re: S7 Edge to HTC 10 - First Impressions are mixed.

I heard there's only like 3 or so VZ apps installed, but an OP confirm this?

Re: HTC 10 owners first impressions/review thread

I am still hoping it has Apt-x but I still have yet to read somewhere if it has it or not.
Here's my twitter exchange with HTC on the subject:

@HTCUSADoes the 10's Personal Audio Profiles work with bluetooth headphones as well as wired? Does it support aptX? Thanks

@jeffreytz Yep, it works with Bluetooth APTX as well as a number of other wireless protocols.

Re: HTC 10 owners first impressions/review thread

I went the other way around. I was using the S7 as a temp phone until the G5 came out and I ended up getting the G5. However, for me at least, after using the s7 for a bit before getting the G5, i missed a lot of what Samsung offered so I traded my G5 for the S7 Edge.

Are you happy with your decision to drop the S7E to get the G5? I do miss certain things about the G5, mainly the wide-angle lens. Just curious how you felt about the transition.

Hey - I miss the display and I miss touchwiz. I don't miss the fingerprint magnet though. I like my G5, but I can't stand their pre installed UI theme - the settings menu and notifications are alright, but their icons are what drove me to a launcher as soon as I got it.

Apart from small things, both phones are excellent - the main feature that I love about the G5 is definitely the camera, that wide angel camera is excellent.

I actually prefer the HTC 10's display more than the Nexus 6P and Galaxy S7. I find the 6P and S7 screen just too saturated for me, they're really quite saturated. I had this complaint with the S6 last year, but it seems the 6P and S7 follow suite. Things like the Youtube app has an extremely intense red on AMOLED displays and other apps can have really intense colours. A common argument I hear is that you can turn the screen to sRGB mode, and sure you can, but the problem I have with that is that those modes look too dull and washed out, despite being 'accurate'. There needs to be a good medium where colours are still saturated and pop, but don't go too far. I find the HTC 10's display hits that mark pretty well. It's kind of like the iPhone's screens as far as saturation goes, which I think is a good spot.

Also, the whites are much better on the 10 than on either the 6P or Galaxy I've owned. AMOLED screens I've had always have a yellow or blue hue to them. The 10's LCD screen has much better natural white.

But that's just my personal preference.

On a side note, I find the HTC 10 much better in bright sunlight than the Nexus 6P as well. On full brightness I can see everything fine, which isn't so easy on the Nexus. However, I have polarised sunglasses and for whatever reason the HTC 10's screen looks dark with polarised sunglasses on. The screen image doesn't come through well when I have them on.

Re: S7 Edge to HTC 10 - First Impressions are mixed.

Consider me underwhelmed after 22 hours. Screen is OK but has zero wow factor and forget about using sunglasses when outdoors. Funny, the roles used to be reversed and HTC was much better in sunlight than Sammy. Amazing what a couple cycles will do.

Speaker quality is less than impressive. It's good but not great. Headphone quality is indeed excellent, but other than being louder, I cant say it's better than my V10.

The bottom line is I'm used to phablet size phones and in the end this isn't the phone's fault.

Re: S7 Edge to HTC 10 - First Impressions are mixed.

Well hopefully you find a phone that suits you. For me I find the 10 a great device so far. I don't mind the screen at all. It's not as vibrant as my s7 edge but I like it all the same. The phone is more fluid than the s7 edge which says a lot for me. In the end everyone has their own preferences and with so many great choices out there there is a device for everyone.

Reception on my HTC 10 is noticeably better than on my s6 edge. Phone is faster than my s6 edge for sure too. I like the weight. Feels nice and meaty. Battery so far is great but only had it one day. Only lost 3% over night.

The lows in music come out from the woofer at the bottom and the highs come out from the top which does sound kind of cool, but being a phone there's not enough differentiation or distance between the two to really enjoy the setup..

Actually true "sub-woofers" deliver non-directional bass sound; you're really not supposed to notice "separation" of the highs and lows in this setup, all they're doing is dedicating certain frequencies to their own speakers for (hopefully) clearer, richer sound. In this implementation its meant to be a really good sounding mono setup overall.

Got it yesterday and spent a lot of the evening tinkering with it. its unlocked on T-Mobile. Here are some thoughts/impressions:

- HTC transfer tool took almost 2 hours (from an M8). Though that was because of m y 35,000+ SMS/MMS.
- Had to go through the app list to re-install most of my stuff. Was annoying, but surprisingly quick. Most apps would download and install in under 10 seconds. Much fast than the M8 (which already had MM).
- Re-ran the transfer tool with just setting selected, and got all my apps back into their original folders and locations. Saved me some time there.
- Phone is really really fast. Liking this a lot.
- WiFi speedtest at home got a little over 100mbit, which is better than my M8 got, but not near my 400mbit line (ran on 5.0ghz AC)
- Cell speedtest at a random red light produced 95mbit, fastest I'd ever seen on any of my phones, so liking that.
- Cell speedtest at work got me about 12mbit, which is faster than the 2-4mbit I'd see on my M8. Band12 goodness?

Now some questions/issues:
- definitely harder to see the screen with my polarized sunglasses on. Do not like that.
- Is there a way to switch the recent apps to show a grid instead of tiles. Got the grid with MM on my M8 and i really liked it. hard to go back to tiles.
- Is there a battery savings mode that isn't the "extreme" one. I think the M8 had a "regular" savings mode, and then the extreme one as well. Extreme turning off all data and other stuff seems like overkill. Would like an intermediate step.
- Is there a way to customize the quick setting options for when you slide down from the top? Don't care for calculator being there.
- Not an actual issue, but BS player labels my SD card as internal storage, and my internal storage as external storage. Weird.
- Is there a way to get Google Photos to use the albums I already had on HTC Gallery in my M8. they're all in folders by categories I liked. Would be a pain to sort it all again.
- Speakers definitely not as good as my M8, but I knew that going in.

I don't really use/care for the camera, so no impressions there.

My initial impressions, my phone gets warm. I guess same as the Galaxy S7 but coming from the 6P, its noticeable. There's no shortcut to launch the camera, except from the lock screen. The battery seems to drain fast and the camera has to struggle at times to focus. I've turned to using Nova as i don't like blinkfeed at all and to setup some gesture shortcuts for camera and other things. The screen... its bright but i personally think it has trouble adjusting or it doesn't adjust brightness as quick as i'd like it. I also noticed when exiting the camera app, the brightness shoots up, then simmers down. I've thought of returning it.. but i'll give it at least a week.

On the plus side: The phone looks great, very solid look and feel to it, nice weight. The screen looks nice, when its well adjusted to the lighting conditions.

Almost forgot, what in the world is up with all the duplicate apps and the double launchers. In my case, i had two calendars, two calculators, two email apps and two messengers, what is this?? Right from the start when pressing home button i was asked to choose google or sense, wow.

Unlocked or carrier branded?

That's weird. I have the Verizon model and I only have one of everything. The unlocked model must be different.

Unlocked. Maybe i expect it to be more plain-android like but since its an unlocked version they're giving us the option to use the sense or android defaults apps. Benefit of the doubt ;)

Weird. I had no duplicates. 1 calculator, 1 email, etc. Have an unlocked phone.

And thanks for the power saver tip! Now if only i could replace extreme saver in the quick settings with that :)

My phone hasn't gotten warm at all. I haven't had my battery drain fast except for when I was initially downloading my apps. You could have removed blinkfeed by pinching the home screen and going over to the blinkfeed page and dragging it to the remove button at the top of the screen. I agree with you about the phone having trouble adjusting brightness.

What phone did you have before this phone?

Same here no duplicate apps on the unlocked model, I would suggest factory reset and may be start clean without restoring from back up.
