HTC Mail Memory Leak/Bug ("Phone Storage Getting Low")

Reset + 10 days

Internal phone memory 6.6 total, 6.5 avail no change
Phone Memory 748 total, 705 avail no change
HTC mail 16.44mb up from 14.83 yesterday

As stated yesterday, I will not be deleting email, but letting the phone remove them at the three day point.(My download options= 3 days)

Because of the HTC mail program memory problem, I eventually had to factory reset my phone and I now use K9 for email. Its been working fine now for 6 days. I contacted HTC through email and was contacted back today after 8 days waiting. They sent me generic factory reset instructions and didn't attempt to fix or acknowledge the problem. I'm just not going to use the HTC email program and call it good.

Just to update this on my own experience.

Two accounts, 1 IMAP, 1 Hotmail
1MB Mail size limit
15 minute sync frequency
Download 3 days for Hotmail, 30 days for IMAP
SD card for Temporary attachment files
11 days until HTC Mail got up to 110MB. Did a factory reset.

Still two accounts (IMAP and Hotmail)
100KB Mail size limit
15 minute sync frequency
3 days download for both accounts
SD card for Temporary attachment files
Been 4 days and my HTC Mail went from 1.93MB on day 1 to 2.03MB today

Is it the way HTC Mail downloads large files? I'm not complaining about my HTC Mail performance, but this seems odd that my days to keep the mail and the size is the actual cause/solution to this bug.

I was up to 28 mb and decided to try something different. Deleted my account in htc and loaded up k9. I had hoped by deleting the account it would clear the 28 mb. No go.

...and k9's fonts are a little small for these old eyes. Not too impressed yet.

Today, my HTC Mail was 2.13MB. I cleared the cache (from homescreen, Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications, clicked on Mail > Clear Cache).

It's now 2.02MB

What causes Mail to bloat up? I'm not getting the bloat now like before, but I'm not gonna complain about it.

Im at 44mb in htc mail and no memory problems for over 2 weeks now. I also have my gmail account bringing me the same emails so that i am able to compare them to each other. i tried both K9 and maildroid and I didnt love either. I like the HTC mail as long as I dont get the memory problems. Really miss the BB mail though, but not enough to switch back.

Tried clearing cache?

What percent of the total size of the htc mail is cache?
Mine was at 10 mb with 5 of that being in the cache.
After clearing the cache, the total size went to 5mb. I got my phone on day 1 and have 3 comcast accounts and one gmail account.

I clear my three mail accounts trash files and my caches on a regular basis.

I have never seen the low memory message

In reading all seven pages rather quickly, I didn't see any SPECIFIC mention of deleting the Trash files, (htc mail/menue/folders/trash/menu/delete/menu/mark all/delete) This needs to be done separately for each account.

I think the 3 day thing is not what you think. It's the download limit. Only those within 3 days old will be downloaded.

San Jaun where do i find the "Cache"? I have deleted mail in my trash folders, don't know, or i can't remember finding/setting any thing for a cache...

Thanks

Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> Mail You'll see an option on that page to clear the cache.

Cleared the cache again. going onto Day 5 since resetting to factory defaults, and my Mail app is still only at 2.16MB

So, I've gone from 1.93, to 2.16 in a matter of 5 days. Again, I don't know why my Mail app bloated up last time, but this time doesn't seem to be buggy. You guys think it's the size of the downloads allowed?

yeah those numbers are all ok. my issue was that the file size was growing 15 to 20 megs a day, well beyond all reasonable data

168KB is cache and total is 43.81MB today.

Internal phone memory 6.6 total, 6.5 avail no change
Phone Memory 748 total, 704 avail down from yesterday
HTC mail 21.54 up from 18.63 up yesterday( 19.35 data + 2.18 cache)

Socal, I have my "Download options" set for 3 days, and also the email account only retains 3 days of emails, nothing older is saved... Does the download option control both?

You can download a new beta version of k9 mail with the ability to change font size here:

Downloads - k9mail - Project Hosting on Google Code

I have been using the most recent 2708 version all morning and it is great.

Also, I have about 425 emails between all 4 of the accounts I have in k9. They are only taking up 5.88 mb. I think they would take up much more room if I was using the htc app but am not sure because I am too afraid to try the htc mail app since receiving my replacement incredible.

Was just a new Incredible after crash

OK help. I don't know anything about these phones. Went from a BB to this on recommendations but the memory got too low, slowed to a crawl, then crashed when I tried to look at AOL mail (thousands in there that I need to keep for reference). Before I turn on and switch to the new replacement Incredible (and you're right, this is a huge problem and I didn't get half of what HTC said) what should I do? Load K9 first? Which K9 is it? K9 Mail Locale Plug-In by Boutique SOftware or K-9 Mail by K-9 Dog Walkers? The follow setting you all have talked about?

Can someone tell me in newbie English, why Verizon and HTC said there's tons of memory and this isn't a problem, when it is? What was the 2 GB card supposed to do if it has 8GB already?

Help?!!!

I had to switch to the Incredible from the Motorola Droid a month ago because the screen wouldn't swipe and I couldn't answer the phone. Huge problem! I'm a 1st responder volunteer fire fighter and I can't answer the phone sometimes (even on this HTC doesn't see the swipe) or just get my email with attachments?!?!?

Any recommendations before I do something that will cause this new phone to lock up too?

You need to do some regular maintenance. Just like with the BB.
You need to clear the Cache regularly, and clear the trash folders in the mail. Unlike the BB, when you delete an email in android, it goes to a trash file, it doesn't disappear from the phone.

I don't think you can store thousands of emails on a phone and expect it to work. Try to keep these seperate on your sd card somehow. Send them to your compluter, put them in a word doc and then store that on your sd card.

To clear cache, go menu/settings/applications/Manage Applications(wait for it to compute)/menu/filter/all/menu/sort by size.
Select the first app then press the clear cache button. do this for all the top apps that have more than 1mb of size.

for the Mail, go to mail/menu/folders/trash/menu/delete. From here you can select individual emails to delete or press menu/mark all/delete.

If you get a lot of emails with attachments, your space can fill up quickly
