The M8 camera got a good workout today.
We went on a boat tour round Bristol docks and the photos I took showed the best and the worst of the camera.
Up close or within a few feet I don't think any smartphone can rival it for colour depth and focus as well as depth of field and a really wide lens that almost matches what you can see in real life and personally I think the M8 can even match a good DLSR.
The low light performance was once again outstanding and I'm not sure this phone has ever needed to use the flash, it's so good.
But bright sunlight and deep shadows caused the usual exposure problems and 4MP whilst perfect for portraits at close range isn't enough for distance shots, plenty of chroma artifacts and lack of detail in the distance.
Just as a plug for my city, Bristol, or Brig-stow as it was known in Saxon times has a fascinating history, since the Saxons first built a bridge over the river Avon over 1000 years ago (Bristol Bridge is on it's third iteration now - well it is 1000 years old!)
The city had a castle after the Norman invasion in 1066 and we had our own pirate, Blackbeard, who was quite a nasty bit of work in the late 1600s.
The city really prospered in the 1800s with the slave trade and then almost died with the end of the slave trade.
We had one of history's best engineers, Brunel who built the SS Great Britain (world's first propeller driven metal ship), the Great Western railway and the Suspension bridge at Clifton.
Bristol also birthed Samuel Plimsoll who brought in the Plimsoll line on ships that saved many sailors lives over the centuries (due to the greed of the very rich Bristol merchants who has scant regard for the safety of their crews and ships because of over insurance.)
Finally, we saw the Matthew today, the ship that Bristolian John Cabot bungled his voyage in trying to find Asia and ended up discovering North America in 1497 hehe
Anyway, enough of me pimping my city - some photos
The family.

A 1000 year old bridge (that's had some work done on it tbh)
The ship (Well a replica) that bumped into the USA.
