HTC One (M8) Photos & Videos Thread

Re: HTC One (M8) Photo's & Video Thread

That really takes me back. You think that's been there about 30 years?

This dealership has been here since the 60's. No telling how long ago that was put there. Didn't McDonalds remove him because of obesity?

Wow, didn't know that. Not entirely surprised though, seeing as how everything is socially sterilized these days.

I know this is way off topic, but here's your Grimace history. It looks like he disappeared when the McDonaldland commercials came to end end. That dumb purple thing was my favorite! :)

Grimace was a character featured in McDonaldland commercials. He was a large, purple anthropomorphic being of indeterminate species with short arms and legs. He is known for his slow-witted demeanor. His most common expression is the word "duh".
Originally, Grimace was the "Evil Grimace", with two pairs of arms with which to steal milkshakes. After that first campaign, the character was revised to be one of the "good guys", and his number of arms was reduced by two.
Commercials and merchandise generally portrayed him as a well-meaning simpleton, whose clumsy antics provided a comic foil to Ronald McDonald. The character was retained after the streamlining of the characters in the 1980s and was one of the few members to also be retained until the end of the McDonaldland commercials.
He had an unnamed mom, an unnamed dad, a grandma named "Winky", a great, great grandma named Jenny Grimace, a possible brother named King Gonga (who rules over all Grimaces).
Grimace was last seen at Dodger Stadium on July 18th, 2012 vs. the Philadephia Phillies, dancing to Ram Jam's 1977 classic, Black Betty.

Ok, last statement on the Grimace matter before we get in trouble.. He was changed into a single pair of arms in 1975 so that sticker could be from then until the early 90's.. That is all. Back to the pictures!

Re: HTC One (M8) Photo's & Video Thread

I am strongly considering this phone and appreciate the sample photos being posted here. By and large the photos look pretty good. I think the Ufocus feature can be improved by later firmware updates, if HTC will do it. Has HTC been good about firmware updates in the past? Anyway, I thought I saw a sample video somewhere that you can make manual adjustments to the blur line if the phone does not outline the subject very well. Is that right?

Also, I am currently on an iphone 5 and would love to see some side by side comparisons of the same exact photo being taken with iphone and the M8, if anyone is able to do that. Thansk!

Re: HTC One (M8) Photo's & Video Thread

I finally got a chance to play with my M8 camera. Wow! that's what I can say about the night shot capability. Now I understand what "low light" peeps here are talking about. I took a shot of my living room last night and what I saw on the pic was ~twice amount of light intensity my eyes were seeing in the room (by feel, but no exaggeration). Unbelievable!!

I didn't even select night mode.

Alright. I had a road race at the Tennessee River waterfront this morning. After wow-ed by the low light capability I was ready to see what I traded in in bright light condition. I'd say overexposure does happen. But some of them can be avoided or alleviated just by focusing or moving the frame a little, though I hope later HTC would provide a better camera software or firmware to improve it. Here's some of the shots.

Some runners on the road. I think this is a bit over-exposed. All auto, not post editing, as I haven't started to play with those functions yet (HDR may have helped?).

The waterfront, with sun about 120 degree to my left. Again, all auto, no editing.

Another site of the waterfront, sun was about 90 degree to my right. All auto, no editing.

My computer screen (most computer screen) is not as good as the M8 screen (smartphone screen) for sure. These photos look a lot better on the phone, in terms of color saturation (not over/under saturated) and contrast.

Overall M8 cam is very fast to focus and that renders high percentage of success rate of taking clear/focused pics. So far it's 100% (56 taken), including 3 in very low light.

Re: HTC One (M8) Photo's & Video Thread

After seeing people complain about outdoor lighting and contrast, I tried a few to see what would happen. It was so bright out that I couldn't see a thing on the screen and most are framed up less than ideal. Just point and shoot, no showcasing. I think they could stand to be brightened one step.

Below is one I took last week with my One X. The One X pic looks more impressive at a quick glance but it is really washed out with no color in the sky or trees. Also, under extreme cropping/zooming, the 4mp M8 is actually more detailed than the X with twice the MP. I think a lightened/edited M8 pic (or one that was manually adjusted in shooting) would be superior in every way. But here, it's a give and take.

EDIT; For the sake of comparison, I did a quick lightening job via M8 to make a better all-around exposure of the first car photo. So, if you're having trouble with outdoor contrast, keep in mind that the phone offers some pretty rich editing options;

Here's the only place in which a problem arose. If I (auto)focused on the rose it made everything go dark, even though this is in the middle of the day. It's a cool effect but not something you want in every day use. Granted, it's easy to work around.

FURTHER EDIT; After having luck fixing the car pic easily, I decided to see if the rose was salvageable. I was certain it wouldn't be because phones can't do that type of surgical editing.... until now I guess. I literally just went into the filters menu, bumped some faders up, and it's a usable pic that retains contrast and isn't bleached out from the lightening process! If I really wanted to work on it, I'm sure I could get it much better too.

Much better picture from the m8 compared to the one x. Good comparison showing once again, more megapixels aren't necessarily going to give you better pictures

This is by far my favorite feature of the camera app. You can get a useable picture out of an otherwise "ruined" shot.

Re: HTC One (M8) Photo's & Video Thread

Some lovely pictures posted here. I think the bad rap the camera gets might be undeserved.
