I got an Android, but want to go back to the iPhone. Why is this?

I see a lot of people on the train with Samsung phones and a lot with iPhones. They all look content. What else matters?

You said that Android is low end. Hence my post.

I did not say android is low end. Please re-read my post. I said android COVERS the low end. In others words, there are android handsets for folks that are on a very very limited budget. That is not the same (at least, not the same to me) as saying android IS low end.

Re: got an android but want to go back to iphone. why is this

I agree there are more android handsets out there. Android covers the lower end, a market Apple, for whatever reason, ignores.
Not just low end...the vast majority of Android phones are not low end phones.

Note 3, Nexus 5, HTC One, S4, Moto X, G2, Xperia...these are the bulk of Android phones in the US and they are NOT low end. And they cover all price ranges, both above and below the best iPhone.

The bulk of Android (at least in the US) is high end, not low end.

Re: got an android but want to go back to iphone. why is this

Well when I speak of the cost of the device, I'm speaking from the perspective of the majority of users in the United States.
So am I.

People go into the store and see the on-contract price because they is all they know about when it comes to the cost of a phone.
They used to...the T-Mobile revolution has changed that. You no longer have to bind yourself to contracts to buy a phone anymore.

T-Mobile financed my Nexus 5 Nexus 4...no down payment, and no interest...and still no contract.

Obviously the actual cost of the phone is broken up and put into the plan but most people don't see it that way.
They did not used to. That is changing now, even on Verizon.

That being said, even on contract high end Android phones cover all price ranges, both above and below the best iPhone.

Never mind looking at the cost of a device outside of the US where many devices cost much more (i.e. Nexus 5). I'm not comparing the actual material costs, but the cost that people pay out of pocket, at the store for the phone. Of course you can get into specs and get into the perceived value of the phone, but I wouldn't expect a lot of people to go into a store and say, "I don't want the iPhone because it doesn't have an HD screen", or, "I don't want the Galaxy S4 because it doesn't have a 64-bit processor."
Sales figures don't lie. For whatever reason, most people are passing on the iPhones for Android phones. If it's not because of cost or specs, what is it?

I would also say Android is perfectly fine for most people, at least recently. You have all these OEM skins which make the device more user friendly, and devices are available at all price points. But there is also an argument for people buying an iPhone because they can get help from friends/family who use one.
None of my family and very few of my friends have iPhones anymore.

The way you worded it made it seem like all of android is low end.

That's an argument all of it's own. Personally I see the trend of handset makers who make beautiful devices easily as good as anything Samsung or Apple but are struggling financially because they're no match for those companies? marketing muscle as sad and tragic. There's nothing that I detest more than monopolies and duopolies.

I would really hate to live in a mobile device world where HTC, Sony, LG, Moto etc no longer made flagships. Really hate it. But I don't know if it's fair to blame Samsung and Apple marketing resources for that, when a part of me also thinks some level of disdain should be reserved for consumers in our society.

Put it on the consumers. They are the ones buying it in bulk.

Re: got an android but want to go back to iphone. why is this

The thing about Android low end is just because the MSRP is low doesn't mean it's useless. I'll take a $179 MotoG over $650 iPhone 5s any day, it's infinitely more useful for me. Lots of Android phones have higher bill of materials than iPhones. No thanks, keep the elitist pricing, I have no problem of affordable phones for the masses that have actual bang for the bucks.

Up until recently, the only "cheap" phones that actually performed well was the Nexus line. And even those would be considered expensive to someone on a budget. I'm glad to Moto G is so good, while still maintaining a low price.
Hopefully that'll force other OEMs to put out quality products outside of their flagship line

I've had a lot of android phones and I honestly don't see the iPhone being any worse than any of them. I liked the Note 3 okay and I really liked the G2, but to me those devices weren't better than the 5s' I'm using now, they were just different. Ford is not better than Honda, it's just different.

For whatever reason, most people are passing on the iPhones for Android phones.

On the four major U.S.carriers, iPhones account for over half of all smartphone sales on each carrier. So, as far as carriers go, you did not make a true statement.

Uh huh

US: Android-iOS Continue Cyclical Leadership Pattern
US+Smartphone+Market+Share+-+Sep+2013.png

The US continues to be the iPhone's strongest market, and is highly cyclical like all iPhone-centric markets. Over the last couple of years, the Android platform has held a narrow lead over the iPhone, except in the holiday quarter. Interestingly, this year's September iPhone decline was slightly sharper than expected. This could either be caused by greater than expected pent-up demand for new iPhones or a sign of saturation in the high-end smartphone segment.

iPhone only leads in sales one time of the year.

No back-button drives me nuts, and I don't think I could ever get used to not being able to make any app the default for any function. Apple Maps taught us why that is a bad thing.

There are a lot more choices in Android handsets from a lot of different OEMs, from the low end to the high end. I still find it surprising that the iPhone does as well as well as it does considering the number of alternative android handsets and that there are no iPhone models targeted to budget conscious consumers seeking lower-cost equipment.

I had to get used to it myself. It took me about a good 4-5 days to stop looking for the back button.

Check the U.S.carrier figures, as that is what I am speaking of. Apple's lowest average % over the past few quarters has been 46% of smartphone sales on the carriers.
That % will probably substantially increase when the larger screen iPhone releases.

You mean like Android all the way up through Ice Cream Sandwich? Basically junk, but yet I still used it, and it got better. Just like Apple Maps, which will end up being a better product than Google Maps. It just takes time.

Apple maps better than Google maps? Really? Google Maps and Nokia Maps are bar non the best mapping solutions. Google Maps even more so. Search places destinations it's just so many reasons why Google Maps is the best. One of the main reasons I stayed on android was because of Google Maps.

Subsidization and 2 years contract. Once it goes away, if it goes away, people will still buy iPhones, but a lot will also realize how over priced it is and look for alternatives.

I don't see how Apple maps would ever be better than Google maps when Google maps has such a head start.
