I personally witnessed an AT&T Rep pushing Samsung in a big way today.

I wouldn't wait for a phone in a line but I have for games in the past :). Waited for a few hours in front of the store and got it but no overnight / tents or whatever lol.

I'm not much of a CoD fan but when MW3 was released the Game Stop's manager here bought more than enough pizza and homemade BBQ for everyone there. I can't wait for NCAA and Madden 25 release parties.

My phone is a good One!

I really hope the One is a great phone, because I have had a few HTC products that were horriable. My wife's HTC Evo LTE is aweful. It will not have any connection were my Note 2 has full connection, the Evo music player can never find the music files without powering the phone off and back on, and for 2 days it would not send an email or text. I really hope they made a quaility phone with the One becasue my wife is about to look at the GS4.

LOL my sales reps don't even try to direct me when I come in for a phone any more. I've embarrased a few of them on more than one occassion. I love when they used to try and push a phone on me.

We see it enough on this forum where the Samsung people and HTC people are very passionate about their preference and their chosen manufacturer is the only one that doesn't suck. It stands to reason these opinions spread to at least some of the masses, and I would presume AT&T sales people aren't any different. They're going to sell what they like. Or whatever they get an "incentive" to sell.

That's called the customer acquisition cost, and it's not uncommon in any industry, several carriers are offering perks to new customers. But it seems like this cost for businesses is growing over time. It would make for an interesting graph to see different industries cost change over time. It's a gamble by the suits, they are betting that their product or service will be so impressive that you'll stick around for a while and they'll make that money back.

But for a sales rep to do it, when returns are the least fun thing to do in retail, says to me there's some additional incentive for the reps to sell Samsung.

that's just it, it has to be incentives.

a few years ago when we were remodeling our kitchen, my wife knew exactly what kind of Viking oven/cooktop she wanted. that was a $8,000 oven. but we get to the appliance store and the rep was pushing another brand half the price. my wife was like WTF, did you not hear me when I said that Viking oven over there was the one I wanted? So we left and went to another store.

Curious at the interplay at the previous store, we called up and asked if the other brand oven had any specials going on and the person said they did, they're doing inventory reductions on that brand. So there you go. It wasn't the best for my wife, just for the salesman.

I saw Iron Man 3 last night and before the movie they played a 5min video about the HTC One and how it was made.
I was very excited!

I went to see it yesterday has well. HTC's One got around 5 minutes of screen time in the commercials (around the same amount for samsung).

Exactly, it is unlikely there is a big conspiracy against HTC by the reps, it is more likely a combination of a couple possible factors:

A. Reps get higher commission for pushing the GS4 than the HTC One
B. Reps believe the GS4 is easier to sell than the HTC One, and think they will be able to earn more commission by pushing it.
C. They just really, really like Samsung and push their products.
D. Perhaps their store took on too many units, and reps are now being forced by management to push the GS4 to reduce stock levels.

The s4's been out for such a short time that I'm guessing it's not a matter of stock levels. And with Samsung's popularity levels I don't think this is any mystery. Now a rep actively pushing people who want the one to the s4 or vice versa is a little more newsworthy.

Brand recognition will always play a major role in our lives. This is why I hate shopping for phones at brick-and-mortar carrier shops since there's always that darn salesman that blatantly pushes you into buying a device of their preference just because they "like it". (Even more so now since big magenta carries the infamous iPhone 5)

Then again, there was that time where I simply "wowed" a T-Mobile rep by demonstrating that my SGSII had NFC built-in......:p

Different people get different positive emotional response from different things. And yes, that includes standing in line for some event (where the process itself matters, not the phone itself or, for example, the results of a sport game which you can look up later from the comfort of your own home). Go to a proper educational institution, take some PSY courses if you are actually interested about what motivates people to do such things. If you're not - well, then there's no need to waste anyone's time with your pointless comments.

He called people that stand outside for new products "unstable"

The iPhone 5 is an awesome device, I don't see how it is infamous?

I had the HTC One for about 2 weeks and I liked everything but the camera. It is terrible and that is a dealbreaker for me. That and I lije the screen better on the galaxy.

E. They don't even know your phone exists

Went to my AT&T local corporate store today for an issue with a Nexus 7 SIM card thing. While he was dealing with AT&T tech people that I don't like to deal with over the phone, I asked him if the HTC one was doing very well. This guy as been there for several years. He said "oh yes, selling them like crazy," He then went on to say "I sold my iPhone to get myself one and I love it".. I thought to myself..A). I sold my iPhone 4 to get a Galaxy s2 and never looked back.. and B) for an AT&T guy to voice that, out in the open, in the middle of the AT&T store, that there is finally a shift going on. This phone has people talking and switching from iPhone. I know that plenty of people moved over to the Galaxy S 2,3,note line also. So did I. But this phone crushes the whole theory of "I guess you couldn't afford an iPhone so you got an Android "

Again I see this point all the time. The majority is STAYING with iOS it just looks like there is a massive change. In my country more people have switched from android to iOS.

You unwittingly make my point for me. Thanks. If there is a more comfortable option, why on earth would an otherwise sane person pitch a tent for days on end or choose to stand in a line outside for countless hours for a MOBILE PHONE?!? There are many videos on Youtube that capture these long lines. One in particular is in NYC at the Flagship Apple store. The line, snakes around an entire NY city block. There had to be at least a thousand people in that line: Not to sign up to get on an organ transplant list. Not to get government free food because they're destitute and have a family to feed. Not to apply for a job at a factory that's having a mass hire. But TO GET A MOBILE PHONE that would be available online and in stores. A mobile phone. Unstable.
And love em or hate em, Samsung highlighted it and mocked it brilliantly.

Yeah we like to mock others and call them sheep. But I'm pretty confident that Samsung would be happy to have similar lines of sheep for their products.

Not to mention Apple's free cash flow levels.
