Initial Impressions of the HTC 10

I'm not sure if the unlocked bit is going to appeal to more than a small niche...and that niche does already have the Nexus line. Now, I'm willing to accept the HTC 10 as a pseudo-Nexus as well, it's a more powerful option in the 5 inch space than the 5X. But I wonder how big of a market that actually is.

On the other hand, LG seems to have made a misstep with the G5, the modules not fitting well, and a lack of a module ecosystem so far, plus some build issues they have yet to work out, leaves HTC an opening to pick up market share. Which I think they will, it's a good alternative to the heavily-skinned Korean phones, and the ONLY lightly-skinned option carried by the phone carriers themselves, since Google pulled the Nexus from them.

It's a small, but growing niche. Estimates put the unlocked market at 9% in the US and growing. BLU, Apple, and Motorola apparently making up the majority of that 9%.

It'll be interesting to see HTC and Motorola compare, when the next X shows up.

Come to think of it, I wonder if X being the roman numeral for 10 is not much of a coincidence here. Maybe they're targeting Moto's niche specifically.

With a $350 difference between them, HTC is definitely not targeting the Moto X.

How much was it when it first came out? Remember, there's already a $100 off coupon on the HTC 10, so it's really $599.

Does everyone get access to the coupon?

Starting price for the Moto X was $399.99. Currently, it's $50 off all storage models OR $349.99 (32GB) for those (ugly) Jonathan Adler designs.

Factoring today's pricing for both at 32GB, there's a $250 difference if you factor in Adler for Motorola and the coupon for HTC.

Re: The HTC 10 is official - Initial impressions

No more htc gallery? I think it is using Google photos by default

I, for one, applaud this move. Granted, it might be self-serving since the chances of me buying a 10 are slim at best.... but the more people that use Google Photos (and the excellent backup feature) the fewer panicked posters here asking how they can recover accidentally deleted pictures. :)

The coupon code is shareable (HTC1008) per the email.

The extra $250 gets you this:
~ Better CPU
~ More RAM
~ Build & Materials (not saying the Moto is bad)
~ Fingerprint sensor
~ USB C (future proof?)
~ UH OH protection (when purchased through htc.com)
~ Better camera (?)

I had the Moto X Pure for several months after release, but I always felt it was a mid-range device. Also I did not care to much for the size.

It seems we can only buy it unlocked from HTC and put it on at&t or T-mo in US. For Verizon, Sprint, even that might not be doable. Looks like HTC got all the basic of phone right this time. But without standout feature like waterproof, edge screen of S7 or friends module of G5 and such a limited availability in US, I don't see how this can save them in sales. I think it would be hard to put dent on G5 numbers let alone S7.

Scroll up. I was arguing that HTC isn't trying to compete with the Moto X.

After many bad experiences with Samsung phones and with the looming prospect of being stuck getting my wife another one here's how I feel about it...

I really want confirmation on this.

It will come to T-Mobile Verizon and sprint

I want confirmation on the SKUs.

To me, it looks like:

  • Unlocked (but GSM-based carriers only: AT&T, T-Mobile)
  • T-Mobile with carrier bloatware
  • Sprint with carrier bloatware
  • Verizon with carrier bloatware

Curious as to why HTC can't achieve an unlocked model that supports all four major US carriers like Apple, Google, and Motorola.

I think it's reported Verizon is not going to carry HTC 10 and today at&t is said to be not selling 10 as well. Is it confirmed for Sprint? I'm sure we can use unlocked GSM phone on at&t and T-mo though.

This is the line where I drew my assumptions from:

The Unlocked version is compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile. The HTC 10 will be available for Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Sprint soon.

Re: Verizon specifically:

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2016/04/htc-10-coming-to-verizon-sprint-and-t-mobile-but-not-att/

Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint have all confirmed that they will be selling the HTC 10 but AT&T has decided to pass on this smartphone. It’s not going to sell the HTC 10 on its network.

http://www.androidheadlines.com/2016/04/htc-10-will-available-verizon-coming-weeks.html

While reports from earlier in the day have suggested that AT&T will not carry the device on its network, Verizon certainly will. The nation’s largest carrier has now officially announced that it will be offering the HTC 10 “in the coming weeks”. What’s more, Verizon claims that it will be the very first carrier in the country to offer the device, even though T-Mobile, too, has announced its plans regarding the HTC 10 earlier in the day, as has Sprint.

Re: The HTC 10 is official - Initial impressions

I think they rewrote part of that page? Hopefully I am looking in wrong area.

Value Tab HTC page said:
You’ll be able to switch carriers at will with the HTC 10 unlocked edition.
Simply insert your AT&T or T-Mobile SIM to begin using your HTC 10.* Sprint compatibility requires separate hardware – HTC 10 customers switching to Sprint will need to purchase a compatible device. Simply insert your AT&T or T-Mobile SIM to begin using your HTC 10.*

Just something I found after clicking "post"
