Initial Impressions of the HTC 10

I also received the $100 off offer via email for pre-ordering the HTC 10. There is no expiration mentioned in the email (I just rechecked the fine print) so this will surely be a case of YMMV.

I have been reading all day about the HTC 10 and have watched many hands on videos. My initial impressions are very positive, so I will start with the things I like the most:
  • The design is great
  • I like the new Sense UI
  • BoomSound is still here and maybe even better than ever
  • The Display seems to be very good.
  • The camera seems to be great.
  • The whole phone seems to be very fast and it offers a sleek design and performance

However, there are things I do not really like:
  • I do not understand why HTC is not offering a silver version with black front. Why only in the US?
  • Availability from mid May.. I had hoped for immediate availabilty.

I am not sure if it is worth it for me to upgrade from a Nexus 6P. If I sell my Nexus, I will get around 400€. I would need to pay around 300€ on top of that to get the HTC 10. I am sure the HTC 10 is not worth 300€ more than my Nexus, but knowing me, this is not very important :)

I really like HTC, its software and its great design. I like my Nexus 6P and the big display, but I will buy the HTC 10 as soon as it becomes available here in Germany, despite the fact that it is not worth it for people using a Nexus 6P. If you are coming from any other device, then the HTC 10 is clearly a winner.
I think I will get used to the smaller display. At least this is what I am hoping. I really like to support HTC and this time I have the feeling that HTC listened to the criticism, so I should support them with my wallet..

its not Mid May it ships early May based on the pre order that I placed. I also says this on their website.

According to a German website the device should be available in Europe around the mid of May. I guess we will see..

Got it maybe its earlier in the US mine says early May.... who knows if it takes to long I will cancel lol....

$1 in Canada isn't $1 in the US.

The HTC 10 should be $892.92 in Canada doing a straight conversion today. :)

I was including the discount in the $899. It is actually $999. So it is over a hundred more taking the exchange rate into account. I am aware of the exchange rate. Thanks.

Factor in an additional fees for doing business in Canada and import taxes and you'll get to $999.99.

Oh, so now you aren't doing the direct conversion gotcha? You are doing the regulatory gotcha. Thanks.

Can you explain why the Nexus and LG flagships didn't do this then? Even the S7 is $100 cheaper.

No idea but I've seen the same complaints from forum posters from Europe.

Doing conversions today on the US prices of the S7 brings me $20 to $40 within the Canadian equivalent. I always assume it's due to other costs associated with doing business in that country.

As to why HTC Canada would price the 10 about $100 more than an S7, that's anyone's guess. I'm over here thinking HTC should be priced between the 6P and the S7 and they've gone over the S7 in Canada. The diehards will think it's worth it but good luck HTC.

Why is that? It's a phone that is no doubt competitive to the S7, don't see why they should have to price it lower than the S7.

I think the issue is brand recognition and marketing. The phone itself is very competitive with the S7, but it needs marketing in order to show consumers just how competitive it is and how it justifies the price.

Personally (I've said this in the comments), I think maybe the MSRP could be a touch lower. Maybe $649. Not a huge difference when you look at it, but can make a bit of a difference at times for sales.

This isn't a case of me not being able to afford the 10 at its full-price (I'm going to splurge quite a bit on the upcoming Galaxy Note 6), but given that the 10 costs as much as the GS7 and is likely sold in the same shelf, it would be interesting to see how it fares.

I can already see 2 advantages for the 10. The availability of a GSM-unlocked unit direct from HTC and the $100 off promo code for former HTC customers.

It's the same price as the S7 edge. Come on now, that shouldn't be the case. It should be the same price as the S7 at the very most. I agree it's competitive but they don't have the brand recognition or cache to charge more.

Actually, it's the same price as the flat S7.

So while a step up from Samsung, not at the level all-four majors US carriers that Apple, Google, Motorola, BlackBerry, and LG are now at.

I can't speak for Apple or BlackBerry. From what I have noticed...the unlocked phones being able to work with all US carriers started from these OEMs when Google made it possible with the Nexus 6 Motorola built. A year later the Moto X Pure Edition was out and it was able to work on all US carriers no problem. The Nexus 5x came out in 2015 and now in 2016 the LG G5 unlocked and being sold to be able to work with all carriers. Maybe Google will have work with an OEM first in order for the next flagship to be able to work with all carriers. Google discovered something when designing the Nexus 6 that made it possible. Either that or they just decided to include all the bands that it could think of. That's just a guess that I have.

Agreed. Like the situation with the One A9. I love this phone's looks and specs, especially software, but to the less educated, they might see no reason to get this over the GS7. I'm personally on a GS7, because of a really excellent pre-order deal that only cost me around 60 dollars to upgrade from my old Note 5 once I sold it.

Actually, that may be HTC's big problem this year: the 10 may be too little too late. 10M+ are already on the GS7, and despite liking this slightly more than the Samsung, it's not nearly enough to justify the jump.

Watching these impressions videos, the HTC 10 is nice but it won't save HTC.

Personally if I was in the market right now, I'd probably get an S7 over the 10.

Maybe so, and that is what most people will do, but there are a whole load of HTC fans out there who have been dying to see another phone as great as the M7 get made by HTC. Short of a disastrous flaw in this phone I'm chopping in my S6 and can't wait! There is just something about that metal body and Sense I love. Samsung phones are great but just don't do it for me like the HTC phone (and I have had quite a few Samsung premium phones)

Cant wait its been long over due in my book and from what ive read it wont be a disappointment like its predecessors and will live up to what we have known HTC for. I really wish the price doesn't got past $450 but we will see where it is.

Well I'm of the opinion that a company should be able to price a product whatever they deem fit and the market will decide whether it's worth it or not.

Will the HTC 10 outsell the Galaxy S7? No of course not. But it wasn't going to outsell the S7 even if it were priced at $300 outright either.

Aside from that, most phone sales are through carriers on plans, so I don't know how much of their sales would be from outright purchases. Sure outright purchases have increased, but that's only really because of Apple and their upgrade promo that they did. Outside of that, phones overwhelmingly sell more on carrier plans than outright, so being $699 US I don't think means a whole lot when people will be buying it on monthly payment plans.

I'm sure HTC have weighed up the pricing and have reasoning behind why they decided on the $699 outright price. I think all they're really focused on now is whether the HTC 10 will sell better than the M9, M8 and M7 before it. They certainly have the product, now it's up to them to get their message across.

Same, UK only gets silver/white front - HTC what are you thinking?! WHY? Still, not enough to put me off though. And often in the UK there are carrier editions so we'll have to see.
