Initial Impressions of the HTC 10

I like the simple clock/weather widget on this phone. Is that an HTC exclusive or is it available for download somewhere?

Even if it is exclusive to Sense UI... there should be several widget apps in the Play Store that give something pretty close, if not identical, to whatever you see.

THIS is the HTC that I know and love. The main issue with this phone, which is a masterpiece, is that I don't think it's $200 better than the Nexus 6P unfortunately (or maybe not better at all). But that's the world we live in. So many great $300-$500 phones now. The ones above $600 you have to REALLY like more to pay the extra money.

This phone is just oozes quality. Unfortunately, I can't get one as any of these ultra high end phones don't give you good value for the dollar IMO. Now if this was in the $500 range, I would possibly bite. If it was a Nexus and $500, I'd definitely bite.

HTC is not trying to compete in the midrange with this phone so you will not get a 300-400 price tag. Google takes a loss on the nexus, and everything else is just chinese midrange. Had they relesaed this phone to compete in the midrange market it wouldn't be specked out like this just look at HTC lifestyle version of the HTC 10 that is your midrange different processor and some other small changes. Look at how competing in the midrange worked out for sony not so well Android is over crowded there give it up. When it comes to High end range you really only have Samsung and LG that are established and you have Huawai with the P9+ coming in at what 800 bucks so you have a better chance at building momentum vs the croweded 1000+ manufactuer competing in the midrange market.

No it won't, this phone is over priced. Why would anyone get this over a GS7 or an iphone? Pricing this phone in that ballpark makes you think HTC is in that league and they are not. They're trying to profit like Apple with crazy margins but they don't have nearly the same fanbase or volume of sales that Apple does. They are really in the Motorola, LG, and Nexus league. Those are the phones they should be competing with, not Apple or Samsung. They really needed to hit it out of the park which they may have done with the hardware, but they will still be hobbled with Sense and on top of that carrier bloat. This is a $500 phone at best and will most likely be sub $500 in the coming months. If anyone wants to buy this thing I would until summer and save yourself a few hundred bucks.

With the $100 discount it is $599, plus it comes with a very good pair of headphones. Factor that in, HTC's Uh Oh insurance and it's actually a pretty reasonable price for a phone that matches the SGS7e spec wise and for sure will have a better UI.

That's nice but that price discount is only temporary. If they keep that price then it's not such a bad deal.

Will they drop updates for this phone in 2 years? Will they update this on a timely schedule? Yes and No. Really the only android phone worth considering is the Nexus line and maybe Motorola for the stock-ish android experience.

You do know all these phones/companies are backed by companies with deep pockets - Motorola (Levono), LG (Conglomerate), Nexus (Google). They can sustain losses to gain market share. I do not think HTC is kidding themselves, they know they are not going to sell 10s of millions of these phones. I am sure they ran the numbers and figure if they can make a quality product and a small profit that is a good thing.

I'm not in market for new phone right now, but this is really tempting. I'm hoping the initial positive reports on camera from DXOmark prove to be true. If they are and battery life is decent, HTC could finally have a winner on their hands.

Looks pretty good. Only things I dont like are the capacitive buttons, physical home/fingerprint sensor and lack of dual front speakers. I'll wait for the 2016 Nexus or Moto X.

Who knows when they will drop updates for it. Didn't the M8 recently get Marshmallow update?
I think updates will be timely since it is very close to stock, but it will still depend on the carriers. I expect the unlocked to be quick updates.

If you believe that the only Android phones worth considering are Nexus and Motorola then I suggest you pop on over to their forums :)

I saw in the Ice cover story a picture that might indicate there might be a multicolor LED? It could very much be a reflection thing but it sure looked like the notification LED was "purpleish".

Re: The HTC 10 is official - Initial impressions

Mod note: let's keep the conversation civil please.

Wait! Seems like all the same kind of posts when the Nexus 5X and the M9 was released. Fact is, it is just too early to tell if they got it right. On paper they did and HTC is pretty good at the metal design and quality of build, so that should be a slam dunk.

We just don't know how it is going to preform in the real world. Could get hot, could throttle, could be a software glitch, the camera could be unpredictable. Haven't we all been down this road before? Nexus 5x looked like a home run on paper, until the real world users started to see the lag and bugs. The M9 looked beautiful and camera seemed like a winner, until we saw side by side comparisons.

I am just going to be a wait and see. At least until the video reviews start flowing. And if I can't buy it unlocked somewhere, then I am not even a candidate.

From what I remember with the M9, the camera was suspect out of the gate.

The only issue I have with the phone is I can't have it right now. I mean I preordered it but it's not already in my hands. I need it in my hands. I absolutely hate picking up my Galaxy S6 now. I'm so ready to dropkick it and run back to HTC's loving arms. I miss HTC so much. We had awesome times when I had the M7, then the M8. I cheated but now I'm begging forgiveness.

Re: The HTC 10 is official - Initial impressions

Highly interested in this phone. Only thing I don't like is the smallish screen. I haven't used any screen smaller than 5.5" in the past 2 years, so not sure if that will bother me. I'm also still very much in love with my 6p, so personally I'm gonna decide whether to get the 10 when I can get a feel of it in my hands.

I am on tmobile jump on demand, with the 6s plus still sitting on my table unused. So if I do get it I'm going to turn in the iPhone and jump to the 10,and probably just sell my 6p

GS7e has a larger screen, larger battery and IP68 water and dust resistance. The M10 audio is said to quite good, probably wins out in that department. Price-wise to be fair, Samsung offered the Gear VR and one year of Netflix free with preorders. The Gear VR is on backorder so they are offering to exchange for 100.00 credit on a purchase from Samsung. Doesn't help if you just wanted a discount but if you subscribe to Netflix you got your bill paid for a while.

Re: The HTC 10 is official - Initial impressions

Sure the s7 and htc 10 have similar specs, and the s7 is water/dust proof. Why not get that? You can get it right now instead of waiting for the HTC 10 to ship. But for me, HTC just feels special, the sense feels so personal when you tweak it to your liking. It just feels right. I'll admit I was tempted at preording the s7 with the virtual reality headset, that's an amazing deal. But I just dont think I can switch from HTC, the build quality catches my eye, audio quality is great, performance is the smoothest imo, and my M8 battery lasts all day. So I'm pumped to get my htc 10, preordered it without hesitation.

The build quality of HTC is far superior to Samsung. I haven't seen the S7 but the S6 and S6 edge with the shiny gloss finish and over saturated screens, they look like they were built for a 6 year old. Plus they are fingerprint magnets. It just feels like a toy as opposed to my M8 which feels like a solid device. I'm sure the M10 maintains the same build quality as the M8 or better. People flock to Samsung because of the marketing, not because of the quality of its products.
