[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

GOOD NEWS! :)

I got my UNLIMITED back, but got the warning "If you upgrade again you will lose your unlimited data". After a few phone calls, pretty much me just being a persistent s.o.b, the 3rd supervisor we talked to turned it back on. I originally got an email this morning at 9am stating that my ticket was still pending and I would be contacted when "new" news came to light. I went crazy and called back. 3rd time was the charm I guess. Threatening to leave and all of the paperwork I guess was in my favor. It was probably easier to just turn my data back on then go through the whole returning of phones, crediting money back to my account and then cancelling my account all due to a small $30. Anyways, I'll never do this again I don't recommend it to anyone unless there out of other options. Next time I want to upgrade I will use the dummy line method, LOL. Anyways, DayThyme, I just wanted to say thanks for all the help, mostly the encouraging words. Sounds like an acceptance speech, lol. No really, your good guy to help everyone out here.

- A couple questions though before I let you go. I saw you talking about protection plans above. You said I can go with Asurion, Best Buy or Apple Care. I had an HTC Rezound before I purchased my iPhone 5s the other day. I have a protection plan called the Total Equipment Coverage (WPP + EW), Advanced Devices.
Total Equipment Coverage offers combines the benefits of Asurion’s Wireless Phone Protection with the Verizon Wireless Extended Warranty. If your device or covered accessories are lost, stolen, damaged or experience a mechanical or electrical defect after the manufacturer’s warranty expires, you are protected. Enrollment window is limited to 30 days from date of your phone, tablet or internet device activation. You can cancel at any time. Click here for the complete terms and conditions.

- Does this plan even work on my iPhone, I've had it for like 2 years now, is this the Asurion plan your talking about. I also didn't know that since I purchased my phone through BB that maybe the protection plan was now voided? I forgot I even had the plan still.

- Out of the big 3 which would you recommend? Should I call Verizon and get them to take that protection plan off? I have Apple Care for my iPad Air and was told it increases the value if you try and sell the iPad, that the Apple Care transfers with it, makes the device more valuable. What are the cost of each plan? The plan I listed above, the one that I've been on for 2 years costs $9.99, I just looked a my bill.

- I was thinking about returning my 32gb model and buying the 64gb, just paying the extra $100 or whatever last this week. BB said I have 15 days to return our phones and get our upgrades back. Can I go ahead return mine for the 64gb or will the cause issues to my unlimited data again. I'm assuming that BB would have to activate it again. I will not go through this again if so, I'd just keep the 32gb, LOL.

If you bought the phone between 11/28 and 12 /25, Verizon allows you to return until 1/15. Otherwise you have 14 days to return and get your upgrade reset. If you bought from best buy, you have a 15 day return policy, but if you bought after 12/25, you only have 14 days to return and have your upgrade reset. If you return the phone, then you would have to pay a restocking fee of $35 and the new phone you buy would automatically remove unlimited data again. And the likelihood of Verizon restoring your unlimited data is very slim now that they already gave you a stern warning which is most likely documented in your account records

With regards to insurance, yes, asurion is part of TEC. I would call to verify that TEC is still on the account. Keep in mind that TEC is $9.99 for iphone ($8 for android) and $200 deductible due physical damage for 32gb 5s. It covers loss and theft, physical damage and mechanical defects.

Apple care plus is $99 for 2 years with $79 deductible for physical damage. It covers physical damage and mechanical defects but no loss or theft coverage.

Also, keep in mind that TEC covers the active device at time of peril. So say I switched to another phone on the line where TEC is active , it would cover the new phone.

Apple care plus only covers the device whose serial number had been registered (or any apple replacements).

I believe it stays on your line until you take it off of your line. It works on iPhones, too and as I understand it, Asurion insures for loss, theft and accidental damage whereas Verizon provides the Certified Like New Replacements for mechanical failures.

Here are the details of the verizon TEC plans:

Calling Features: Total Equipment Coverage | Verizon Wireless

Your deductible for a 32GB iPhone would be $199 with TEC.

- Out of the big 3 which would you recommend? Should I call Verizon and get them to take that protection plan off? I have Apple Care for my iPad Air and was told it increases the value if you try and sell the iPad, that the Apple Care transfers with it, makes the device more valuable. I would go with Apple Care for an iPhone unless you really think you need the loss and theft protection. Apple Care is $99 with a $79 deductible for accidental damage, max 2 accidental damages claims. But again, no loss or theft protection. You have to have a phone to give them to get a refurb back.

You can take TEC off your line yourself by logging in and going to change features.

Apple Care is attractive to many US buyers but no good for international buyers as it does not transfer outside the US. Last 2 iPhones I sold to international buyers and so I got a prorated refund from Apple for the remaining Apple Care.

- I was thinking about returning my 32gb model and buying the 64gb, just paying the extra $100 or whatever last this week. BB said I have 15 days to return our phones and get our upgrades back. I don't know if it would cause a problem or not if you did an exchange because I have never done one.

But couldn't they just process it as an exchange rather than a return and new upgrade? Sounds like no, they couldn't.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

Apple care plus is $99 for 2 years
This is a good point because if you want to keep the phone for longer than 2 years, you have no coverage with Apple Care after 2 years, whereas TEC lasts until you take it off the line.

Now Verizon does offer open enrollment into TEC a couple of times a year, but I don't know all the details about open enrollment.

No, it is a different phone. Even if you wanted a different color, it would be considered a new order. Because when you return the phone, Verizon can no longer sell it as new. So they take a huge hit, more than the $35 charge when they sell it as a cpo. Or they can use it as CLNR. But either way, they want to discourage returns and do take a hit on them.

It varies and is typically once a year but this year it was twice, perhaps because they introduced tmp. Last few open enrollment periods (appropriate)

2/22/10-4/30/10
3/1/11-4/28/11
3/1/12-4/30/12
1/7/13-3/8/13

I hear you. I have never returned a phone myself. I do a bunch of research ahead of time.

The only phone I may return is the GNote3 IF I don't get the $200 VISA prepaid card. If I get it, I will just sell it. I need to call and find out about that. They said I should receive it within 30 Days and we are getting close to 30 days.

Will my upgrade get reset if I return by 1/15/14? Or did I need to return it within 14 days even though there are extended holiday returns?

So long as you bought it between 11/28 and 12 /25, you can return until 1 /15 and your upgrade would reset if you bought from Verizon. Third party can have different rules

Just wanted to give a quick update. My phone still hasn't shipped. I plan on calling best buy today and asking what the hold up is as they haven't processed my order yet.

I bought from Verizon through the Comcast promo with the $200 VISA prepaid gift card. Thanks.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

@DayThyme, your right soon as I upgraded to the iPhone the TEC plan I had went from $8 to $9.99. I'm assuming I do actually have the TEC plan, the best plan VZW offers? Oh and sorry for calling you a guy :)

Any who, the top choices for protection would be Apple Care or TEC from Verizon? The pros and cons below, they seem accurate to everyone?

Apple Care:
pros:
- $99 for 2 years of protection
- $79 deductible for damage
cons:
- max 2 accidental damages claims (2 claims for the entire 2 years? so essentially only one replacement phone a year?
- no loss or theft protection not provided
- you need a iPhone to send them to get a new one back

TEC:
pros:
- 2 replacements in a 12-month period with an equipment maximum of $1500 per claim so with TEC I can get 2 replacement phones every year instead of every 2 years with AC?
- loss and theft protection provided
- cancel at any time and receive a prorated refund of your monthly fee.
cons:
- $199 deductible for damage
- $9.99 a month or roughly $240 for 2 years
- for both our phones it'll be $480 :(

Why does TEC include both Asurion & VZW Extended Warranty program? Which one covers what? When I had an HTC Rezound, I once received a replacement from Asurion and once a certified like new from Verizon, separate times obviously. I've never lost my cell phone before (knock on wood) so I don't know.

How is AC better? With TEC don't you get 2 replacements every 12 months? AC is cheaper which I like, only $79 vs $199, $120 in savings is huge to me. Say my iPhone stops working, not due to me but the phone itself, say that screen wont turn on anymore. With AC would they send me replacement that doesn't count as a claim? When I had that Rezound I kept getting replacements that where bad but Verizon continued to send me news ones at no cost until I got one that work.

I have no idea which to go with, stick with TEC and then get TEC for my wifes 5c or go get AC for both our phones for $200.

Comcast is Verizon (at least for the purposes of billing and shipment). So same return policy as Verizon.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

TEC = total equipment coverage, so they bundled device failures with loss/theft/accidental damage coverage. All lost/theft/accidental damage coverage is through Asurion and you have to pay the deductible. Verizon handles device failures for the in-warranty period (1 year) with no deductible and after that, IIRC you have to go through Asurion and pay the deductible.

When I had an HTC Rezound, I once received a replacement from Asurion and once a certified like new from Verizon, separate times obviously. I've never lost my cell phone before (knock on wood) so I don't know.
If you were within 1 year and it was a device failure, the CLNR comes from Verizon deductible free. IIRC after 1 year, device failures are covered by Asurion and are subject to the deductible.

How is AC better?
It's a lot cheaper = $4.13/mo and you are dealing directly with Apple and their employees who are well trained. But it is only better if you don't need the loss/theft protection or if you don't need to make more than 2 accidental damage claims in 2 years.

With TEC don't you get 2 replacements every 12 months?
yes and if you are careless with your device, TEC is better.

AC is cheaper which I like, only $79 vs $199, $120 in savings is huge to me. Say my iPhone stops working, not due to me but the phone itself, say that screen wont turn on anymore. With AC would they send me replacement that doesn't count as a claim?
The deductible of $79 is only for accidental damage. Device failures are deductible free. Same is true of the maximum number of claims - this only applies to accidental damage claims, not to device failures.

I have no idea which to go with, stick with TEC and then get TEC for my wifes 5c or go get AC for both our phones for $200.
I would get AC unless you think you need loss/theft protection or you are so careless with your device that you will need to make more than 2 accidental damage claims in 2 years.

Apple care plus has 2 claim limit within the two year period for physical damage. Unlimited claims of manufacturing defects.

TEC includes BOTH asurion insurance (physical damage, lost and theft) and extended warranty(manufacturers defects) . You can buy them individually for $8.18 (iPhone) /$5.18 (Android) for asurion insurance and $3 (extended warranty) if desired.

Most people aren't going to have physically damaged phones exceeding twice in a two year period. Most people also upgrade every two years. And most people don't lose their phones (cracked screen is much more likely). So apple care plus is a better deal for most people and covers most people's needs. As with any insurance, you must decide which is best for you.

Also, with Apple care plus, a big plus is that you can walk into an apple store and get a replacement on the spot. With TEC, the phone is shipped out to you.

If you were within 1 year and it was a device failure, the CLNR comes from Verizon deductible free. IIRC after 1 year, device failures are covered by Asurion and are subject to the deductible.

Extended warranty has no deductible regardless of age and is handled directly by Verizon.

Verizon TEC covers the current device at time of peril regardless of where you bought the device (even ebay, cl, etc. I have multiple phones and if I switch to an old phone and it is active at time of peril, then it is covered. I had an old phone not take a software update before, called Verizon up and they replaced it no questions asked. If I didn't have TEC, then this would not have been covered as the device was past the manufacturer warranty period.

Basically I take the sim out of my current phone and put it into my older phone, then attempted a software update. Since it failed, called Verizon for a replacement. After I hung up with Verizon, I put the sim back into my note 3.

Apple care plus covers only the registered device, or Apple's replacements for the device

thanks, I forgot that in my state I don't have TEC available to me, only Asurion so it is different for me. In my state, Verizon only gives you a CLNR for 1 year after that, you have to go through Asurion and pay the deductible or argue with Verizon. I was able to argue with Verizon and get another CLNR after 1 year, but it took a lot of work and they had to verify that I had been complaining about the signal issues during the 1 year period and they kept advising me to get a new SIM, do a reset, etc. until the 1 year period was up.

I believe Florida is the only state where you can't get extended warranty. That would suck because I use extended warranty service.

we can get it, but we get it through asurion and we have to pay the deductible, so it is no different than an accidental damage claim. However, if you complain enough to Verizon you can get a CLNR via an exception a lot of times. But Asurion only costs us $5.18/mo for an android or an iPhone.

Re: Bestbuy Mobile Lets me Keep Unlimited Data?

You wont believe this b.s. I talked a to supervisor earlier today, he put unlimited data back on and said from now on any upgrades will lose you that unl data. Thats great, I check VZW.com and both lines have data again. I just got a phone call from one of the supervisors that I previously talked to, the first sup I talked to (he was the that told me he'd get back to me in 72 hours). He left a vmail saying that I was denied? WTF! How can 1 sup put unlimited back on and it shows it right on my myverizon then a few hours later a different sup calls and says I was denied. I'm about to flip ****! VZW reps are a bunch of idiots. No way are they going to take it off again once they just put it back on. I'll raise hell if they switch this. Nothing has changed since that sup just called but who knows if they take it off an hour or a day or two from now.

T-Mobile is sounding a lot better to me at the moment.
