The whole thing is wife wants a smartphone now so dumb phone will be gone. Will I still Keep unlimited data on my three other lines? she wants the camera and storage, will use very little data herself

Upgrade on one line will not effect the others. When you upgrade her line she will be on a tiered data plan. You will have to pick one for her.

You will also be able to use her line to upgrade the unlimited lines by transferring the upgrades.

Hope you guys don't mind more questions, but my head is spinning trying to sort this out...

I currently have 4 lines on a family plan with 2 smartphones on UDP (both currently eligible for an upgrade) and 2 dumb phones that will be upgrade eligible next week. The problem I have is that one kid on a dumb phone would like to get a smartphone. I could go either way on adding a 5th line since it would get used with a dumb phone for a different kid with no phone currently. I just want to upgrade my two smartphones and add another smartphone with the least hassle without losing my UDP on the lines that have it. It sounds like I can use the dumb phone lines to upgrade the smart phones (once they are eligible next week so I don't have to mess with transfers of upgrades), then probably add a new line with the cheapest data plan to get the kid his iPhone. Do I have it right? Clear as mud?

You can do it that way but it is easy to do the transfers. The new line for the other kid will not be unlimited. Just keep that in mind.

Quick update that my S4 received on 3/11 is showing on Verizon site as my current device and data is still showing as unlimited.
I'll keep watching it, but I'm counting this as a win!

One user mentioned that BB called to modify the order. I am not sure if this was an isolated incident or if this process still works.

I already screwed myself and lost unlimited when I upgraded from the Moto droid to the fascinate BUT I would still like to keep my current price low (4gb per month for $30 as opposed to 4gb $70!!). I'm going to try this out to keep my 4gb/$30 I'll let you know the results.
(doing everything through the website btw since it looks like the VZW corporate is catching on to this and stonewalling people in store)

Hi everyone! Having a bit of trouble and just wanted to reach out for help.

We have an old Alltel plan. 1200 shared minutes, unlimited txt & data.
So far today... Ordered the phones through Best Buy website, everything said my plan wouldn't change. I have NO IDEA what they did to screw it up, I honestly don't. But I left out of there with no phones, and they changed my plan. And me frustrated as hell!
2 calls to Verizon later and my plan is fixed Back to unlimited data. So thank you all for the tip of calling directly into tech support and going that route, I didn't get switched to anyone. The first rep somehow changed us to 2 individual unlimited plans?? But the 2nd fixed it all for me

Ok, now back to Best Buy I have the option of ordering the phones and having them shipped to me. That way the sales associates can't mess with them again.

Can I do that and then just activate them on the phone line on the Verizon site?? I know there is a chance that we will for good lose the unlimited data for which we are prepared anyway. But I did take all the screen shots of it saying my plan wont change and for as easy as the rep changed it today, I feel like I might have a chance of keeping the unlimited data. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, I just need help with actually getting these darn phones into my hands really. They will both be Samsung S4's if that matters.

I've looked into doing the dummy line. With our plan/account I can't. It requires me to change plans. I asked today at Best Buy and the guy said with the old Alltel plans you can't add another line one, or even have a separate one. It will force me to go on the shared everything plan. I'd have to open another account in my husbands name. That seems like too much trouble. I looked at Verizon account and it matches up with what he said. I would have to go to a shared plan.

First off, screenshots won't get you anywhere. Secondly, what phones do you have now? Lastly, when you receive the phones do not do anything online or over the phone. If your current SIM cards are compatible with the S4's then you just pop them in and turn the new phones on (with the old phones off). Simple as that.

In regards to thinking that screenshots will help you, they won't. I ordered my Note 3 from Best Buy, screen shots in tow, and messed up the activation process (documented in this thread a few posts back), and ended up being kicked off unlimited data. Many calls to Verizon and no one wanted to hear it. There is no real way to send them documentation of what "supposedly" happened. People had luck with it awhile back, but as far as I'm concerned Verizon has caught on and doesn't want to hear it. I ended up sending the phone back, having unlimited data reinstated, and then going through the process again. I've retained unlimited data this time around.

And yes, you are correct on the process of what to do. I had the original Droid Razr Maxx, and the SIM card fit into my Note 3 perfectly. My mom has the S4 which I activated for her, and the SIM card was the same size as the one in my Razr Maxx. You should be fine swapping them. Also, I can't remember if the S4 comes shipped with the SIM card preinstalled. Just in case do NOT turn the new phones on until you have put your own SIM cards in. That's important or else it'll boot you off unlimited.


From what I understand, on 4G phones activation is tied to the SIM card. There is no more calling in or dialing any numbers in order to activate. It's as simple as putting a SIM card in the phone and then turning it on.

Same situation I was in. You can try the Best Buy method which is what I did. I guess it still works.

No you will have to get a sim cutter, because the 5s uses a nano sim and the 4s micro sim

Thanks for your reply. This sucks. This is suddenly becoming more complicated. I ordered the phone from Best Buy today and so far it went through with no issues. I am wondering if somebody will call me tomorrow.

How easy or difficult is it to cut the SIM card? Any recommendations for how to's or tools. Thanks.
