[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Update...

I was going to cancel the order and called BB and was told that the phone is on backorder. Never got an email, nor does website indicate backorder. She put me on hold and said it was for sure on backorder, could be up to 7-10 days. No date given for expected availability. Of course, they offered to do in store pickup which I politely declined.

PS only way to cancel is to call BB.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Some good information here. I do have a couple questions. Are you ordering the device for the line with the upgrade, or transferring the upgrade to a non UDP line? Also, can I purchase the phone through the BB website and do a store pickup? Thanks.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys, any help on this? Can I buy the M8 on the dumbphone line 2, pick it up from the store, and then activate it on line 4?

Or would it be best to use the upgrade glitch on BB to upgrade line 1 to an M8, then swap devices between like 1 and line 4?

Or if possible, could i transfer the line 1 upgrade to line 4 using best buy's checkout system without losing UDP on either line?

I'm not familiar with the BB method. I know the first method you mentioned will work. Just buy a new phone using upgrade on Line 2. In the store they will probably make you activate the phone and chose a data plan on line 2 which is fine. After they do put your dumbphone back on line 2 the data plan will drop off and free's your M8. Activate your new M8 on the UDP line of your choosing.

Just got off the phone with them, my email says I should receive the phone between the 18th and the 22nd of this month. They told me over the phone I was supposed to receive it between the 23rd and 2nd of May... oh well guess like I have to wait a bit longer

Any reason you don't want to pick up in store? Will that screw up the upgrade?

From what I hear you will not be able to keep your UDP if you pick it up from the store

Make you activate in store? Does it cost anything to have the data plan added and dropped off of line 2?

Good to know! Thank you...otherwise I would have done it for the instant gratification

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hi all, new member with a question. I apologize if this has been asked earlier but I didn't see it. I ordered the HTC One M8 from BB and it looks like everything is ok with UDP so far. The phone will arrive tomorrow at which point I'll put in my existing SIM card. I'm coming from a Razr MAXX and know I'll need to cut down the SIM to a nano SIM size. However, will I not have any NFC function since the Razr MAXX is not NFC capable and does not have an NFC SIM?

If so then is it possible to activate the HTC using my old cut down SIM, then somehow obtain a new NFC SIM either through Verizon or elsewhere and activate that on my line without it affecting UDP? Since we're all going through the trouble of keeping UDP I just want to make sure that myself and others in a similar situation don't do anything dumb to lose it.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Great thread! Any help here would be appreciated...

I have an UDP with a gnex right now and just purchased the S5 from BB. First, I got an email saying the phone was on backorder. Not ideal, but that's fine. Then I got another email saying there was an issue with the order and to call them. I called them and was put on hold forever and then the guy comes back and basically says there's no issue with the order, except that the SIM card that comes with the phone won't work. He said I would need to use my old SIM or go to Verizon to get a new one. He also said I would have to call them when I got the phone. I was planning on just putting my old SIM card into the new phone anyways per this thread, but now I'm not sure what to think. I specifically asked if my plan would stay the same and he said No, I would lose my unlimited data and they would sign me up with some data max plan where I get 8 GB of data a month.

If I just plug my old SIM into the new phone, should I be alright? And I'll just skip the call to Verizon/BB. Any thoughts on this?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I did geek squad protection and they sent me an email confirmation of being active the day I recieved the shipment don't cancel it'll go throught mine did. GS5 with UDP

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

If you use the sim card you already have you should preserve your unlimited data.

Of you active or first with the old SIM you shouldn't have any problem getting a new SIM from Verizon later on.

Since you had to call them and they told you that you are going to lose unlimited you need to cancel your order.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Even if I just swap in the old SIM card? You think I definitely need to cancel?

If they already told me I was losing it I would cancel the order. After you cancel it you can try again.

The problem is that when you got the email to call them once you do they contact Verizon. Verizon tells them you will lose your unlimited. So if you try to activate that phone you will lose it.

It will be prorated from the time it is activated until you put the dumbphone back on. Perhaps a few hours.

From what others have posted: If you pick up in store then they will activate the phone and you will lose UDP.
BBuy rep told me the have to activate it in store if you pick it up.

Also
Since calling to check on order and was told S5 is on backorder, my verizon account has changed from month to month and now shows contract end date of 4/15/2016. Next eligible upgrade is same date. Girlfriends line on same account (Family Share) still says month to month and eligible for upgrade. Plan remains unchanged, UDP still on account.

BBuy order still shows as 'Order in process'. I am hoping this is a good sign. Fingers crossed that I see an 'Order is shipped' email soon.

The sim card for Verizon only holds the ISIS NFC capability. If you are not familiar with that, it is Verizons version of Google Wallet. You don't need this unless you plan on using the service. I disabled the app and will never use it. The phone itself does have NFC built in. There is a chip that is set around the camera area. I have confirmed this with my M8 and I can assure you it does work. I tried it several times with my wifes S3. Just make sure both phones have NFC turned on. On the M8 there is an icon on the notification bar that shows NFC is turned on. Stupid it's there but nothing you can do about it unless you turn off NFC. Just be aware, the NFC is a bit finicky but it does work, guaranteed!
