[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hi Everyone,

I was taking a look at this thread the other day and decided to take the plunge! My wife and I both have an upgrade available on our Verizon family share plan (we both have UDP's). I have a Galaxy Nexus and she has an S3. We preordered S5's for the both of us through bestbuy.com in the hopes that this method would work.

Just a quick question for those who have already done it and have insurance through Verizon/Asurion. How do you update your policy to cover your new phone once you do the upgrade? Do you simply call up Verizon and ask them to change it....do you have to wait a certain amount of time so that they don't see something fishy and force you to lose UDP?

Thanks!

Hi Google47:

The coverage actually follows your line, not the device. When you call to activate your new phones, just remember to let the representative know that you would like to have coverage on your new device. We also suggest checking your next bill to ensure your coverage has continued. Verizon also has open enrollment several times a year. We are here to help if you need us.

Thanks!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

All-

Here's a question I've not seen asked in any of the threads covering transfers of upgrades. The situation is:

  • I transferred an upgrade from a line with UDP (Line A) onto a basic phone line (Line B).
  • Ordered a new smartphone for Line B and selected a tiered data plan.
Nothing new above and I understand the activation and SIM switching process. What I've not seen discussed is the accepting of Terms and Conditions. I just received an email stating that before my order can ship (3 days after placing it) that I must accept the new contract Terms and Conditions. It says:

Equipment Ordered For: Line B
Contract Extended For: Line A ?Use this number to Accept Terms and Conditions?

Is this normal?

Thanks

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Such a journey this has been. I have the beloved unlimited legacy data plan with Verizon with two lines, my husbands and mine. Going on anything else is not an option for us as I work from home (out in the country so no other internet available) and my phone is my Internet so we easily use 70 gig's of data a month on average.

Long story short, I've spent the last two weeks being screwed around by various phone and in person Verizon reps. One telling me I could upgrade (we are going for the GS5) and still keep my unlimited, the next telling me I couldn't upgrade but could keep my unlimited when the time came and the next telling me that everyone else was wrong. By the end of today I was so frustrated I started checking with Sprint on their plans and prices and started scouring the internet because I knew there would be ways to both upgrade and keep the unlimited hence my stumbling on to this post (ty ty ty).

So I went to Best Buy's website, clicked on the GS5 it asked for my Verizon number so they could check my account. At this point I'm really nervous about doing anything that may even potentially jeopardize my plan. I enter the information and it shows I can upgrade, I can keep my plan then it says that the phone needs a data plan but then gives me the radial that says 'keep my existing data plan'. Before I go on ordering his phone than mine, I want to make sure I've gotten everything correct from this thread as there was a lot of information both pertaining, than on other subjects to read through.

1. Order said phone from Best Buy's website (have to do one at a time)
2. Make sure to take screens in case they become useful later (lol)
3. Select to keep existing plan and existing data where ever it asks
4. Select to have the phone shipped to the house
5. Read, check and double check every screen to make sure there isn't tiny text stating my plan will or may change

Than once I receive the phone:
1. Don't power on GS5
2. Power off existing phone
3. Remove Sim from GS5
4. Place existing (Razr Maxx) sim into GS5
5. Power GS5 on

I'll make sure to watch the account in case any changes are made and contact Verizon if something happens. But was that everything...am I missing anything? I figure if the account is changed and I can't get anyone at Verizon to budge, I'll just return the phones and we'll proceed to find another option but I think it's worth at least trying as long as I am doing it correctly.

I understand why Verizon is not offering the plans any longer. Some got the plans who really didn't utilize them to the full potential so the new plans are going to be cheaper for them. But there are others like myself out there who need that unlimited and utilize it to the point where this plan really is the better route. I think Verizon needs to look at that and really say, you know what, these people if they insist and we see their usage really won't do well on the other plans, leave them on it. All they are doing is pissing off the masses which is causing them to seek alternate carriers >.<

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

@GeekGurl I had to show my wife your post to make sure it wasn't her! You're in the exact same situation as we are; my wife works from home and were in a very rural area as well, lol. It sounds like you have the steps down correctly. I should be my SGS5 early next week and will post whether it worked or not. I believe the worst case scenario is you will have to return the phone to Best Buy, but you will not lose unlimited if you return the phone.

If something does go wrong and it kicks you off your UDP, call Verizon and tell the rep to process an "Inactive Pricing Request".

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Read through everyone's comments. Thank you to everyone who has helped each other out in this thread. I have Upgraded today, with the hopes of keeping my Unlimited Data Plan.

I saw Bestbuy.com had the HTC One M8 on sale for $150. I applied a gift card that I had lying around, and essentially got the HTC One M8 Glacier for around $100. I have a HTC One that I bought outright in September of last year to keep my Unlimited Data Plan. I have just the single line 450 minute plan with an upgrade. I really love the HTC M8 as I played on one at the Verizon store. Since it was released a few weeks ago, I wanted to take the chance and upgrade, before any of this gets patched up over at bestbuy.com.

Put in my information. Selected keep plan. Selected the option to keep existing data plan. Best Buy then had me verifiy my information again, and read through the terms and conditions. None of which mentioned anything about keeping unlimited data or changing to a share everything plan. Went to check out. Confirmation email sent, stating that "no plan changes with existing data plan". I'm excited! I ordered a SIM card cutter, going from a Micro to a Nano. I should receive my package sometime next week. I'll let everyone know how that goes. I'm thinking the reason this all works and comes together is that when you upgrade normally at a store, the SIM card activates the new plan in the system and the old SIM card is deactivated in the system. By purchasing phone online and upgrading, they can't deactivate your current SIM, because you would be without a phone until your new one arrives, so they just set it up for you to do it when it arrives, and change your upgrade date, which allows us when we get our new phone, to use the current SIM card, and bypass the rules of the new SIM card, this activating the new plan change. What would be interesting, but no one Is willing to try this, I assure you, is have someone try a couple months down the road, pop the new SIM card into the phone, and see if your data changes. Almost certain it would change your data to a limited plan, so I'm throwing the SIM card away that they give to me, after I know that it is all up and running. I'm crossing my fingers this works, unlimited data with the HTC One M8 will be nice. :) I currently average around 10GB. :/

lol. Is it bad to say that I am happy to hear that you thought I was your wife? Every time I mention needing the unlimited data, rather it is to Verizon idiots or anyone else, they think I'm crazy and just over exaggerating what we use. I have to pull at my phone and show them the 'my verizon' app with the current usage to prove myself. Heck, we are sitting at 126 gigs used so far in this cycle which the last Verizon rep I talked to on the phone was floored by.

Let me know how you two fair with your upgrade, it's going to be a week till we start our process so that my husband is here when it arrives. He travels for work and last thing I need happening is his current phone going dead because Verizon noticed the order and decided to dink with the account.

Edit: I forgot to ask what the inactive pricing request is/does as I've never heard of it. I've literally not had to do anything to our account other than show up once every two years for our new phones, oh and once to add the wi-fi/tethering ability for the home internet capability

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

(recap: 4 lines. 2 UDP, 2 dumb. 1 upgrade avail on each. transferred to dumblines, BOGO'd the S5. Activated on the smartphone lines with my S3 sims)

When I logged into my account on the web it was giving me crap about 'pending orders' but at the advice of others I let it go and it has indeed dropped off so everything has gone swimmingly. My total plan is unchanged, 2 dumbphones, 2 unlimited. Kicker is somehow this only extended the contract on one of the lines. So I've got one contract that goes until 2016, 1 month to month on the line that the upgrade was transferred to and two upgrades available later this year. Feels like a bug but I have no idea how/why they'd catch it at this point.

So if the contract date didn't extend 2 years do you also still have and upgrade available for that life?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So I received shipping notice for BB. Should be here tomorrow, but I won't be around for a few days. I anticipate it should work at this point.

Now I just have to get a phone ordered through BB for my girlfriend. Both times she has tried she had a problem with order and had to cancel or risk losing UDP.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Just a small update from yesterday. My upgrade eligibility date on My Verizon Mobile has been change to two years from now. Still, about five days away from getting my new phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So here's my scenario : 2 smartphones both month-to-month right now and 1 basic phone. Used the upgrade on the basic phone last year to get the S4. I'm wanting to upgrade to the G3 when it comes out, but keep unlimited data on the 2 smartphones. Is this possible and what's my best option? Thanks in advance.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Well folks I've been following this thread very closely and want to thank everyone for all the great info.

I used the BB method and now have a new M8 AND my UDP. Still works! Thanks!

I used this exact same method to purchase a new M8. I got mine last night, activated it on my current SIM and I still have my UDP and my contract has extended for 2 more years. Have fun! It's an amazing phone!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Need some advice. We got the old Nationwide Talk Share 700 w/ Unlimited Data. 2 phones ready for upgrade. Whats the best way to get some new phones and keep the unlimited data? Or do you think we should just try selling the account and get the new plan? It would be about the same price since, since they changed the way they do discounts, and 8gb plan would be about what we would use.

yeah. it says "month to month" and I get all the ads on the side for "upgrade available, try this phone!" stuff.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Going from Bionic to Samsung G S4 which I should be getting this afternoon. So what are my options if my cutdown sim to microsim card fails to work in the S4? If I ask verizon to switch out sim cards will they mess with my UDP?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I had a Bionic and had a much easier time than mykl376. Very surprising, but that's the way it happened. Trimmed my SIM down and it's been working great since. Not using the new SIM at all.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing, feeling much more optimistic now. Long live our UDP!

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Questions... Say in the future I get a new phone, am I stuck with my current SIM card? Will getting a new SIM from Verizon or deactivating the upgraded phone put me on tiered data? If a Verizon rep notices that I got an upgrade can they simply boot me off my UDP? What happens if I swap phones on my account, or sell the upgrade? Does anyone have insight on this?
Starting to have second thoughts now

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Hello,

So I just did this early morning, and just like everyone else have an unlimited plan trying to keep it. Checkout is how described with everyone else, I selected keep plan and all. However, it appears I got an email saying the order had failed and I had to call to in the next 48 hours before the order was cancelled. 1st time I called in, the lady took awhile, then the call dropped. 20 mins later called again, transferred to 'back-office' where the women asked for my order #, phone #, last 4 SS, and billing pass (she said to check eligibility). After being on hold she said that the order looked fine on her end but she would have to call verizon to see what the issue was. So I was put back on hold and at this time I was like 'noooope' and hung up.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

*Update*
-.- The second women was so nice to give me a call back... She pretty much said that she talked to verizon and because we had two plans, we would need to merge them...(aka share everything). She also said there was no DOB listed on my second line and she would need that to proceed (I'm thinking this might have brought up the red flag in the automated process, but what do I know).

So I guess I am stuck with proceeding and no longer be in the wonderful club of unlimited, or I cancel the order. Thing is that I had applied $75 worth of reward discounts and the $50 giftcard when u upgrade promo attached to it.. Hopefully I can reorder with those.

Just curious but why did you get a S4 when the S5 and also the HTC M8 are available?

I'm just curious why you would need new SIM cards? You only need it if your gets fried somehow, or if Verizon is doing tech support and somehow messes it up (this happened to my husband)

In the future if you got another phone you would simply put your current SIM into your new phone. If you were to need a new SIM for anything get it before you activate a new phone. They charged us $3 for one, but from what I've read on here they should be free.

If you swap phones on the account? Turn both phones off and swap SIM cards.

If a rep notices you upgraded, I do not believe they can move your plan. You didn't consent to your plan being changed.
