[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok so I was planning on going in this weekend to upgrade a basic phone on my plan to the smart phone and follow all of the steps previously stated. What would be the chances of it not working at this point in time and me lose my unlimited data?

There is no evidence that anything has changed.

Also, you have 14 days to return the phone, reverse the upgrade and get your unlimited data back.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I followed the steps in the OP and just activated a new S3 on a basic line. The phone works (i.e., can make calls and use internet), but when I log onto myverizon, and I select "Upgrade Device", for the basic line that I just activated, it shows "Device Needs to Be Activated (Activate When You Receive Device)". Is this normal?

If I go to "Activate or Switch Device" and select the upgraded device, it says "Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this MDN but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance." Is this normal? When would I be able to switch it back to the dumb phone? Do I need to call Verizon to get it done?

I am not following you. You say you have activated a new S3 on a basic line. Well once you activate it, you need to pick a data plan and then the line is no longer a basic line. Please spell out what you did in more detail. For instance, did you add a line or transfer an upgrade to an existing line or use an upgrade on an existing line?

These are 2 existing lines on the acct:
Line A (unlimited data)
Line B (basic line)

I transferred upgrade from A to B and ordered S3 for Line B. I just activated the S3 for Line B and added the 2 GB data plan. Now Line B is able to make calls and use data on the S3. When I log onto MyVerizon, and select "Upgrade Device", it shows for both Line A and B: "Device Needs to Be Activated (Activate When You Receive Device)". When go to "Activate or Switch Device" and select Line B, it says "Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this MDN but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance." Is this normal? How can I activate the dumbphone back onto Line B?

I think you have to call and verify that the activation on Line B has been completed in their system. Sometimes the activation gets stuck in their system but you can still use the phone.

I had a similar issue when I was switching phones around on lines. No one could explain why it happened. They said just a glitch that happens every now and then.

I just called and they say it completed on their system too and that it takes up to 24 hours on their system to update. Is that true?

I was told the same thing so I waited 2 days and it still was stuck in their system. They had to get technical support to push it through. They ended up resetting it by listing the SIM card as lost/stolen. Then they were supposed to change it back as not lost/stolen but the tech support person didn't change it back, so I had to call again to get that fixed.

Anyhow, it should work instantaneously. If it doesn't, then there is a problem. However they will tell you to wait 24 hours. For me waiting 48 hours didn't matter. But they made me wait before they would transfer me to tech support to get it corrected.

You can try to get them to put you through to tech support, but they made me wait. What I would do is call and claim you have trouble making calls from that number. Then you get to tech support right away and you can explain the problem and see if they can fix it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I mentioned the alternate upgrade policy change, that occurred this week, because a lot of people were doing an upgrade on a mobile broadband or tablet line and then doing an ESN change to the line with unlimited data.

The 30 day requirement was announced last month. You cannot just call and have them put it back on. It's with upgrades starting when it was announced. If you try to do it and try to call in they will tell you that the upgrade was not done correctly.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can use the upgrade on the unlimited line as long as you do an alternate upgrade to the dumb phone and follow the direction posted on the post I'm commenting on. you can also pull it off on a single line too WITHOUT adding a line for 2 years. if anyone wants to know leave a comment.

You lost me here. What are you referring to when you say "call and have them put it back on"? Put what back on? With the 30 days, are you still referring to mixing tablets and phones or are you referring to phone to phone?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You don't have to do anything when switching sims with regard to setup. The phone number would just change. Your customizations would not be lost. No need for factory data reset

Since I can't just switch sims (no sim in my wife's X2), I need to go in and get a new sim for the new SGS3 that I have already activated on my non-unlimited line. When I go in and get the sim, how should I activate the new sim? I don't think we use *228 for 4G devices, so I am not sure. I could call in and ask for an ESN change, but the sim isn't activated.

Thanks for the input.

Please provide link to policy change. Thanks

Activate the phone on the dumb or tiered data line first. Instructions should have come with the phone, but you can call them or do it online or go to a store to activate. Once the phone has been activated on the correct line for upgrade, you can move the phone to your wife's line but you would need a new sim to do that. You could do that in store, online, or over the phone

I would also and would like clarification on the 30 day requirement. If 30 days is the case, I wonder if it has to be on the line continuously or if there simply has to be a lapse between the time it is first activated on the basic line and then reactivated on the Unlimited Data line.

I wouldn't take that poster seriously. He has posted misinformation and not provided anything to back it up.

I don't think there is any 30 day requirement. If there is, it is new and hasn't been announced.

I am not saying he is wrong, but I couldn't find anything online with regard to this policy. Just last week, Verizon has reiterated that you can transfer upgrades between the same device type. No mention of the 30 day requirement. I will wait for official documentation on this alleged policy change.

He also has 3 posts total on this site, two of which are in this thread.

I just called Verizon. The rep explained that the new policy is as announced - no transferring upgrades from a non-phone device - but that as long as it is a phone line-to-phone line switch, there is no waiting period at all.

VZW said:
Customers may continue to share an upgrade with another person on an account as long as that customer is purchasing another device in the same category. A basic phone or a smartphone upgrade may be used to purchase another mobile phone. The option to transfer upgrades from non-phone devices (such as a Jetpack or tablet) will no longer be available.
