[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Question I have on step 7 is somebody told me you can have a line with no device and Verizon will charge you $10/mo. Is that correct? Then you wouldn't have to get a tablet.

They are probably just adding a Dummy ESN to your account which you can do online by using 13800000400 when it asks you for the device ID of the phone.

Also, $10 to add a tablet, $20 to add a Jetpack, and $30 to add a basic line as the rates when someone has a SHARE EVERYTHING plan.
I don't think it's possible to add a tablet to a Nationwide plan as a single line, for less than $30 for 2 GB per month, but I could be wrong.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wouldn't you
1. Get a new line #3 and a new subsidized smartphone with that line (call it phone C).
2. Swap phone C with phone on line #1 (call it phone A).
3. Transfer the upgrade from line #1 to line #3 to get a new phone (call it phone D)
4. Swap phone D with phone on line #2 (call it phone B)
5. Transfer upgrade from line #2 to line #3 to get another new phone (call it phone E)
6. Sell phone E
7. Get a tablet (Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, $189 on ebay) to put on line #3 to get the monthly price down to $10/mo. Hotspots are $20/mo, dumb phones are $30/mo.

Start:
Line #1: Phone A
Line #2: Phone B
Line #3: Phone C

End
Line #1: Phone C
Line #2: Phone D
Line #3: either Phone A or B or a tablet or nothing if they let you.
Extra Phone E sold

If you have unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE, then you are on the family plan, but share everything plan. The family plan does not have the option for tablets or hot spots. You can add a dummy phone to the line to pay $10 plus taxes and fees

I just tried to add a tablet to my Nationwide plan and it tried to put me on Share Everything and would not give me the option to add it to my current plan. It may be something they can do in store or over the phone, but you can't do it online anymore.

It was $30 for 2GB per month for a tablet month-to-month, no contract service.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, that makes sense as to why online if I tried to add a tablet it tried to force me to share everything. I guess you could open a separate account with only the tablet on it, data only account. It is $30 for 4GB of data. Would they let you do that?

This is a Share Everything Plan. There is no unlimited data option with a Share Everything Plan so there is no problem with upgrades. None of what we are discussing here applies to a Share Everything Plan.

That is correct if you are on a Nationwide Family Share Plan, which is what we are discussing here.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Sure, they'd be happy to add another device to your account. Just tell them you want to keep it separate from your Nationwide Family Share Plan.
And thanks for pointing out that it may be a better deal to put a tablet on a new share everything plan if it is on a single line.
It used to be $30 for 2 GB of Data but under Share Everything it would be $30 for 4 GB + $10 to add the tablet=$40

If you get only tablets on your plan , you can get that plan, $30 for 4GB of data, up to 10 tablets. No smartphones are allowed on the plan. You would also have to pay $10 line charge

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can also mix hot spots and tablets. Hit spots have a $20 per month line access charge.

Can you tether your phone to your tablet? I know you can tether your tablet to your phone, but can you do it the other way around?

Yes, tablets can be used as a hotspot for other devices. I would never do that personally, since I have unlimited data on my 4G phone and can tether other devices for free or by adding the $30 4G mobile hotspot feature to my plan--if I want to play nice. :)

However, it would be beneficial to someone that had a 4G tablet and a 3G only smartphone since the tablet could allow the 3g smartphone to get the benefit of 4G speeds.

Hmm, thanks. I had seen dummy lines mentioned but wasn't familiar with how to use it. I had a separate $30/mo SHARE EVERYTHING plan with a dumb phone that my wife uses (dumb phones have better battery life, she uses mostly talk minutes). I started a new line on that account to get a new smartphone which would have added $40/mo, but then I swapped that phone with a used Tab 2 7.0 (make sure its Verizon 4G version) that I got on ebay for $190 and it dropped my monthly payment to $10/mo. I then swapped the new smartphone with the phone on my Unlimited date line. Only caveat is that new policy Verizon just introduced won't let you use one of the upgrades on the Tablet like to get a new phone in 2 years. Wonder if you could towards the end of the 2 years put a smartphone back onto the tablet line and the use the upgrade to get a new smartphone. Or just cancel that line, get a new smartphone on a new line and downgrade it to a tablet again.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yes I think so, the Samsung Tab 2 (7.0) can be a tethered hotspot. After I changed my MiFi to the Tab to save $10/mo and realized this I was thinking "why would you ever want to just use a MiFi". I guess it's smaller and more portable but it will cost you $240 over 24 months for that convenience. I guess the upfront cost is a little higher. Used 4G Mifi are about $40-50 on ebay whereas the Tab 2 is about $190. Guess it just depends on your personal use and situation. But if your smartphone is on an unlimited plan and the Tab is on a measured tier plan I don't think you'd want to us the Tab as a tether for your phone because you'd be using up measured data.

If you add a hotspot feature to phone on an unlimited data plan would it change your plan and lose the unlimited data?

I would start a separate thread about that since it is specific to Share Everything and not unlimited data. I don't know the answer or I would answer.

No, but I don't think you can do it online any more, you have to call.

However, why would you add it when you can get the functionality on most devices free? Some you have to root to get it others you don't, depends on the device.

Maybe I'm just paranoid that if I activate it or download an app or root it to allow tethering that they would use it as an excuse to cancel my unlimited plan. I'm very protective of my unlimited data plan.

The rooting is not an issue. There is nothing about rooting that could ever cause you to lose unlimited.

As for tethering, first off, there are ways for them to know you are doing it, yes. ATT can so Verizon can. Hundreds of us on this forum do it all the time on Verizon and have kept unlimited data. They would at least need to warn us we couldn't do it any more because of the course and conduct of the parties before they took it away. I assure you that Verizon's lawyers like ATT's lawyers are smart enough to advise to give a warning first. There are people on this forum who have used 800+ GB of data in a month tethering to their phones and never even got a warning from Verizon to stop.

Second, there are ways to mask that you are tethering if you are really worried about it.

Using mhs when the plan doesn't allow it may be a violation of TOS. I personally just add it on the days I use it on vacation or whatever. It is a buck a day. You can add and delete it online using the my Verizon app. I know many use the free options though
