[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Roberto - I am waiting on BB to either cancel the order or ship the device. Their email said to call within 48 hours. I will have to wait and see (which is not my strong point.) I don't use a ton of data; however, it is nice to have the safety net in the event I need it.

Don't buy into their 48 hour window of cancellation. It will take about 7-9 days before it cancels out of their system. They will email you often, call you a few times, but if you continue to ignore them...the order will cancel. Resist the urge to talk with them.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

After reading most the thread, I have 1 line, Razr Maxx HD which already have nano sim. I would use the upgrade on Best Buy site, use the sim from my Maxx HD phone and I should be able to keep UDP?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

jlouang - That's right. Make sure you follow the instructions below exactly:

Things you need to know:
1. You must already have an unlimited data plan (UDP)
2. Only possible ONLINE through Best Buy.
3. You MUST ship it. You cannot pick it up in store.
4. You CANNOT use the sim card that comes with the shipped phone. You must use your old sim card. If it is too big you will have to cut it down.
5. Using your old sim, some features/apps on your new phone will not be available ex. Isis Wallet. (*Once you activate with your old sim it is possible to get a replacement sim to fix this issue)
6. If you run into a problem with your Best Buy order CANCEL IT! Don’t call in and give them your Verizon info or you will lose your UDP!
7. Most order problems are from trying to upgrade on a non-main line. This can be resolved by transferring your upgrade to the main line. Then when the phone arrives you can activate it using the old sim card from the phone you want to upgrade.
8. Again, if you have any problem, cancel the order. You can always try again.
9. Keep an eye on your Verizon account to make sure your plan doesn’t change and your contract end date extends two years.

If you keep these things in mind you’ll have a new phone with UDP intact. I’m serious about not calling Best Buy. They say it’s just a pre-activation thing, takes 5 minutes, it won’t change your plan… LIARS! I learned the hard way and lost UDP on one of the three lines I upgraded. Thankfully it was my dad’s line and he only uses like 500mb max… so I don’t think I’m going to be fighting to get it back. There aren’t a lot of success stories once you lose your UDP

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Thanks so much for the info here! I just got my gs5 while keeping unlimited. I did this on my secondary line, I did get the "call us" email but I guess I lucked out with a good bb rep who didn't **** it up when I called.

The primary line is not yet updated. I will be doing it next.

It worked for me. I was going to pull the trigger from bestbuy.com but It was cheaper on Amazon. They only had the gunmetal grey, which was fine with me. On Amazon website I went through the process that I was upgrading my phone and then when it came to selecting plan, It had the option to keep existing plan. I have nationwide talk 450 with unlimited text for $ 59.99. Under the data plan it shows 2gb for $30. When the phone came in, like I mentioned before I didn't turn it on. I took out the sim card I cut down my old sim card and put in the phone. Now when I look into my Verizon account it shows 59.99 for 450 talk plan and unlimted text and $30 for unlimited data, however I am month to month!!!

On the Amazon and Verizon website right now it says that I am eligible for another upgrade! I wonder if I do this again if it will lock me up in a 2 year plan. I think it will so thats why I am going to wait until another marque phone comes out and most likely sell it on ebay, without the sim card. Does anyone see a potential problem with doing that?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So my wife and I are on an old grandfathered alltel unlimited plan that continued once Verizon bought them. Unfortunately, there are no basic phone lines on our plan, so no alternate upgrades. I've also tried the best buy method, but it fails every time. I'm tempted to try FlyingArrows cross upgrade plan, but I'm a little nervous about it.

That being said, would the following plan work:
Buy an upgrade on my line, but don't activate it.
Have my mother activate it on her completely separate line, like I was giving it to her.
Have her re-activate her old phone.
Activate the upgraded phone I originally bought on my line by going into Verizon and getting a new sim.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Thanks Mthr, I definitely will not call them. I am wondering what prompted my order to "get flagged" but others after me made it through.

What date does the website give you when you click the blue "View Upgrade Date" link?

I'm not sure if your method would work you'd be pioneering new territory. Are there and measured data lines on the account you could transfer to? If not seems that your choices are the 1) FlyingArrow method 2) adding a new line to get a new phone then buy a basic phone on eBay to put on the new line to get monthly cost to $10/mo and let the kids or grandparents use it. 3) Buy a phone at full unsubsidized price.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Unfortunately, no measured lines on the account. I've actually tried to add a basic phone line to my plan, and VZW wouldn't let me add one without dropping unlimited data.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Just wanted to add the success that I had with this via Costco online service. There was absolutely no mention of changing the data for upgrading and its why I went through them instead of best buy. I got the G2 for my wife and her line was the main line. The G2 was only $0.01 with new 2 year deal. But am a little nervous that it will change when my cycle is over which is June 1st.

So add me to one of the successful ones. Go to Costco online not in store.

Note: No issues at all. Order went through right way.

ThebiggestO, I was thinking the same thing! I just did the first one, I'm waiting to see if it goes away but I do still have an upgrade listed

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Been watching this for quite a while and decided to put my order in last night.

Line 1 is a Droid RAZR Maxx with UDP
Line 2 is a Droid 4 with UDP

Ordered Samsung S5's to replace both phones. Followed thread instructions and selected keep existing plan at all steps.

While ordering line 1 had an issue the first time I did the send information to carrier step. Redid step and info was accepted and order was submitted.

While ordering line 2 the initial check upgrade eligibility step was unable to complete. Tried again and the second time it confirmed eligibility and order completed.

All good? About 1 hour later I received the "there is problem with your order, please contact us within 48 hrs".

Billing address matches shipping address/account is paid in full....no idea what caused the issue other than the verification steps had issues and the best buy to Verizon verification steps were really slow/glitchy.

Verizon account shows line 1 has been changed from month to month to a 2 yr contract extension/ UDP still intact. Line 2 has not been changed, still month to month, UDP still intact.

Will line 1 automatically go back to month to month/ upgrade eligible once the best buy order cancels?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Warning: SlickDeals community has been officially notified of this:
Upgrade and keep your Unlimited Data with Verizon 05-29-2014 - Slickdeals.net

I am a frequent member there and I purposefully kept this to myself... I know that is not the mantra of slickdeals... but a lot of those #&$^%#@ will exploit it until it gets shut down... Its all downhill from here...

Another item to note is that I was not charged the $30 or $35 upgrade fee on my most recent bill after the upgrade...

I also was not charged the upgrade fee.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I am curious, what would happen if I called BB and cancelled the order. If I am going to be forced to change my data plan, VzW has the device for $50 less than BB.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Thanks Mthr, I definitely will not call them. I am wondering what prompted my order to "get flagged" but others after me made it through.

That's always the part that picks at your head as you resist the urge to find out what the problem was. My suggestion would be to try it again after you get confirmation that the order canceled. I just got the email this morning stating that my phone shipped out yesterday. I expect to get it Monday, so I'll return an update to see if I can find success.

I'm still curious on what my steps are after activating the phone against my 2nd line sim card. If it works on my wife's phone/line, I obviously want to replicate the same deal with my phone/primary line.

Good luck.
