[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi, I just have a quick question. I called Verizon to ask about upgrading and the guy confirmed that all you have to do is activate a new phone from a non UDP line on the UDP line, but he also told me that my process wouldn't work. I just want to see if anyone here can confirm or deny.

My UDP line (1) has an upgrade eligible.
Line 2 is a smartphone, but not eligible for upgrade.

Can I just transfer my upgrade to line 2 (I made sure to ask, and transferring the upgrade would not cancel my UDP), upgrade line 2, and then activate that new phone on my UDP line? I chatted with Verizon online as well as called customer service and they both said that would work, but when I talked to my local store, he said that line 2 would have to have the upgrade eligible. I guess he just confused me.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I was. :( Wish I could call them up and fight it, but don't want to risk losing my UDP (again).

In this thread it's been fairly well documented that if you transfer the upgrade from the UDP line (1) to a tiered data line (2) and order the upgrade you will not lose the UDP. As per the original poster you'd activate the phone on tiered line 2 first then take it off putting the original line 2 phone back on then activate the new phone on the UDP line (1). However many have reported that it isn't necessary to activate the new phone on the tiered data line (2) first, that you can just take the SIM from your UDP line (1) phone and put it in the new phone when it arrives without activating on line (2) first.

In my personal first hand experience it wasn't necessary to activate on the tiered line (2) first but in my specific situation the upgrade came from another UDP line (3) not UDP line (1) that it's going back to. The only downside I've seen with activating on line (2) first is that if you do it with the SIM that comes with the phone the SIM becomes associated with the line (2) number and you can't use it without Verizon freeing in on Line (1). But recently people have reported SIMS coming from Verizon already attached to Line (2) so I'm not sure anymore whether not activating on line 2 with the SIM from Verizon will avoid this problem anymore. It isn't a big deal if you're going to use the SIM from the UDP line 1 anyway.

Ok thanks. It looks like I will still have to do the activation and deactivation because that would be the only way to use my Best Buy Buyback program.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I'm waiting for BB to cancel my orders and not contacting them. I just don't know if I'm going to have an issue getting my line 1 back to month to month status/upgrade eligible.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So i've been going through this thread and trying to make sure this plan will work for my account.

Nationwide Talk/Text plan
Line 1: Recently upgraded iphone 5s with now 2gb data plan (no eligible for upgrade)
Line 2: UDP Iphone 4 (eligible for upgrade) -needs new phone
Line 3: UDP Iphone 4 (eligible for upgrade)
Line 4: Basic phone (eligible for upgrade)

What I did/should do, after reading this thread, and please correct me if i'm wrong, but I used the upgrade for Line 4 and got the iphone 5s (selected upon ordering a 2gb data plan). Once I get it shipped to my home, I will just need to up activate the phone on Line 2's number, without doing anything further to Line 4. Is that correct? I keep reading about switching SIM cards but unfortunately the Iphone 4 doesn't have that option, I believe. Can anyone confirm that this will work?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Just did it! Got:
Your Plan
These items will be billed by your wireless carrier and do not include all fees, taxes and surcharges.
* The monthly rate for your existing plan will remain the same.

Monthly Charges, See below
Verizon Wireless Keep Existing Plan, * No change
With 2-year contract extension

Device Model: LG-VS980
Line Access Fee, $0.00

Total One-Time Fees, $35.00
Upgrade Fee, $35.00

Then I ordered a sim cutter from ebay so I can trim down my sim card.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Has anyone tried this while having a buyback program on their line? My UDP line is eligible for upgrade, and it also has the buyback program on it. I have to wait till June 4 to transfer my upgrade to our second line (on verizon's website or in the store) because if Best buy does it in the store, I'll lose unlimited (because they use a different program than verizon). They are actually going to do it in the store for me and I'm still going to keep unlimited by doing the SIM swap, and they said I would still be able to get my $150 buyback money.

Yes this should work. The issue with the SIM card is when it gets associated with an account you need to contact Verizon to get it off to use it for another account. It isn't clear to me is when it gets associated with an account. Before they sent a virgin SIM and it gets associated with the first line you activate it on and that introduced problems when people activated it on their basic phone line first, took it off and then tried to activate it on the UDP line. The work around would be simply to use the original SIM from the UDP line phone (assuming they are the same size) or calling Verizon to get the basic phone line off that SIM. Now if it is a virgin SIM you avoid all that hassle by activating it (phone ordered on basic line) on the UDP line right off the bat and the UDP line gets associated with that new SIM. Now it is not clear to me currently though if Verizon sends you a virgin SIM with phone or is it already associated with the line it was ordered for in your case Line 4. If it is a virgin SIM you could just activate it on your Line 2 UDP line and your done. If it has been pre-assigned to your Line 4 then you'd have to call Verizon to take the SIM off line 4 so you can use it to activate on Line 2. If your current Line 2 UDP phone had a SIM you could could just skip all the hassles and just put it in your new phone and your done.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I Got The Same Thing Too Until A Hour Later, BB Sent An Email Saying There Was A Problem.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for answering my question! So hopefully, when I get the new phone, and try to activate it onto Line 2, it should have no problem, Line 4 shouldn't be interrupted and will not be charged the monthly data plan fee. It's also recommended I activate the new phone first and then deactivate my current Iphone 4, correct?

When you activate the new phone on Line 2 your iPhone 4 will be dropped off that line. You don't have to do a separate process for that. Update us on how it goes. I'm interested to know if the currently the SIM comes already associated with Line 4 (In which case it will say you can't activate on line 2 because SIM already associated with line 4) or is it a virgin SIM.and it will allow you to activate.

Will definitely keep you updated. If the SIM is already associated with Line 4, I'm assuming I would have to buy a new SIM then activate it onto Line 2 right?

I Tried To Cancel Online But There Website Says "This Item Can Not Be Canceled".

Yes you could either get a new clean SIM that will allow you to activate it. Or you could contact Verizon to un-associate the SIM that came with the phone from the Line 4. The Verizon online chat is pretty good as you don't have to go through telephone directory hell and can do other things while you wait for a response. Also you can save a transcript of your session as proof that you never authorized them to take your UDP if there is ever an issue. The downside with contacting Verizon is that depending on the CSR you they can tell you things to try to scare you or get you to lose your unlimited. Seems to be a wide variation in CSR you get though the online ones seem to give you less hassle about the UDP than the ones in the store. I'd recommend interacting with store CSR's as little as possible in regards to the UDP as I suspect they get a commission for every UDP they discontinue.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ok,

So best buy sent be the email that i they had a problem with my order, but VZW says that my contract end date is now 2016, what should i do? should i call BB? and i still have UDP.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

It seems Best Buy powers the HTC website for shopping. I order the phone gold One M8 for $99. Same process, kept existing plans and order is currently processing. Hoping it doesn't get cancel. Verizon listed my contract is up 2016 and UDP is intact.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Tried reading through the thread but want to be sure I get the order right. If I have an available upgrade on the primary line and a secondary line on a family plan, what is the best order to take? Order new phone on main line, activate with existing sim from main line, transfer upgrade from secondary line to main line, order new phone, activate with sim from secondary line?
