[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

After reading though most of this it looks like most of the issues are caused when someone tried this method on a 2nd line. I am on a 2nd line and would like to try this method. Is there anyway to work around this without having to mess around with the primary line?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I tried Amazon as the Note 3 is $50 cheaper than Best Buy. But, as I went through the process, there was just no way to get away with out choosing a new data plan. Tried it twice.

So, I tried Best Buy. Strangely I first went in and at the end it only had one option to select a $40 data plan. I closed it and went back through it all again and the $40 option was gone and it just gave me a button to choose "no change" in data. No problem. Paid 50 more than I wanted, but I see no change in my data plan and the contract date has been extended to 2016 per my VZW page. We'll see when it comes and I try to activate :)

Excellent!

Transfer upgrade to primary line and checkout as primary line

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

If you checkout as primary line.... will that not extend the contract of the primary line, which has a dumb phone with no data plan. I don't want to play around with that line. Is there a workaround without playing with the primary line?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

For the bestbuy method it is best to use upgrade on the main line as others have been denied if using secondary lines.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Try using wireless advocates. Its who Costco uses. That's how I did mine with no issues. But yes it was on the main line. Will try using them when LG G3 comes out on secondary line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think I may just be out of luck with scoring a subsidized upgrade. I was reviewing my plan, and it's a friends and family smart pack plan. It's basically an all tel plan that they let us keep when Verizon was bought. This is why best buy cancels every order for me, they have no idea wheat to do with my plan. I tried to add a dumb phone in store at Verizon to have one to transfer an upgrade to, and they said their system won't let them make any changes to this plan, their system doesn't recognize it.

Has anyone figured out how to do a subsidized upgrade on one of these plans?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I placed an order for a Note3 yesterday. Hoping this all works out, I took screen shots and print outs of the order confirmation which says my plan will "remain the same" and "no change" which I figure would give me a strong argument I could win with enough pissing and moaning if they try to take away my UDP which is very important to me. My last two phones I just purchased used off of Ebay to keep UDP, I am not giving it up until they make everyone do so. I was actually just going to buy a Note3 off of Ebay but this way is cheaper, and the phone is brand new, win-win-win if it all works out.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think I just kept unlimited data on two simultaneous upgrades. No extra line needed. No trip to Best Buy. No cutting SIM cards. Not even picking up new SIM cards.

Online, I went through with normal upgrades on both lines, requesting a Droid MAXX and an HTC One M8. I upgraded both separately so that I wasn't forced to enroll in Share Everything. Instead, both numbers stayed on the Nationwide plan. I did have to mark a 2GB line for each upgrade when getting the phones, seeming like I'd lose unlimited. The phones arrived today. I had requested the phone I want on her line and the phone she wanted on my line. Then I activated them online but put them on the opposite lines from how I ordered them. I treated them as if they were any phone I picked up from a 3rd party. The SIM cards that came with the phones worked fine during activation - I didn't have to get new ones. Both phones are now working and My Verizon still says I have unlimited data. The contracts have been extended 2 years. Unless there's something that is going to time out and turn off the unlimited data in the next week or two, that appears to have worked.

I did this based on the suggestion of one helpful Verizon rep on the phone. I tried calling many other times to get confirmation and possibly have someone walk me through it, but everybody else I talked to in chat or on the phone said I had to buy full retail.

Oh - there was one slightly tricky part. When I went to activate the phones, it defaults to ask if I want to activate the new phone they shipped me. There's a link to instead go to another page where you can activate a different phone. It's a sentence at the end of the paragraph - not a large button or anything like that, so it might be easy to overlook. Then choose the radio button to activate a phone that you haven't had on that number previously.

I think I may just be out of luck with scoring a subsidized upgrade. I was reviewing my plan, and it's a friends and family smart pack plan. Has anyone figured out how to do a subsidized upgrade on one of these plans?

Might try FlyingArrow's method, See above.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Love this thread but I have a question about my plan to upgrade through Best Buy.

I have two lines: Line A UDP upgrade available Line B 2GB Tiered

I am going to order online from Best Buy but will transfer upgrade from Line A to Line B. I will select In Store Pickup and upgrade phone on Line B. Go to the store and pick up phone. Go back home and reactivate the original phone on Line B which should drop the upgraded phone off Line B and then activate the upgraded phone on Line A.

Anyone see any problems with this plan? Thank you in advance!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Im of the same opinion. Im sick of looking to craigslist or ebay for phones. I should be able to get a new phone like everyone else. I'm not switching providers as I like and depend the service in my area. We "UDPs" are really the minority and shouldnt be treated like we are the cause for VZW network problems. I imagine they will never make us give up UDP. Why alienate people that pay good money year after year?

Eligibility Check issues?

I tried yesterday from work and again today from home on the BB site to check my account for eligibility to upgrade and it keeps telling me that I have a password on the Verizon account. I know I have a password on the account, I am putting all the correct info in, verified the password is correct by logging into my Verizon account. Anybody else run into this issue? I can't order a new phone if the eligibility check can't even run!

Re: Eligibility Check issues?

Go to verizon website and change the billing password. Its NOT your account password it is the BILLING password, It will be a 4 digit number that you will change.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all,
need to know my options:

line 1 UDP and upgrade avail
line 2 UPD and upgrade avail
line 3 basic phone line and upgrade avail

current plan nationwide Talk Share
would like to upgrade to M8 for lines 1 and 2
Line 1 and 2: old 3 phones, no sim cards. tried calling/going to verizon and they said cannot give/ship sim card without phone

Would Best buy method work? Do i order the phones and then bring the phones in to verizon or call them and give them the mein# for the sim cards?
any help greatly appreciated...thank you

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I figure I ask in here, since this thread is going, I am not a tech person

We have unlimited data on 2 lines, 5 total phones, 4 phones out of contract

Line 1: unlimited data (eligible for upgrade)
Line 2: unlimited data (eligible for upgrade)
Line 3: 2gb (eligible for upgrade)
Line 4: 2 gb (eligible for upgrade)
Line 5: 2 gb, in contract right now
When I went to upgrade the line 1, they said I would lose unlimited data and offerd me 2gb for 30
I have seen youtube videos, where people say to order an upgrade phone on a non-unlimited line, put the sim from an unlimited phone in that one and use it. I think service swap is the term I saw. Is this still possible and can anyone direct me to the steps (i.e. what to do after the upgraded phone from the non unlimited line arrives)? I saw that people got this done with Best Buy, but there isn’t a Best buy near me.

thanks for help

Should work as you plan. One glitch some have, not all is when you try to activate the new phone on the UDP line it will say the SIM is still associated with the other phone line. You can either activate it by taking the SIM from your old UDP line and put it in the new phone or call Verizon to ask them to un- associate the new SIM with the old line then activate it.

I would refer you to this thread in regards to the Best Buy method:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon/351917-verizon-how-keep-unlimited-data-get-phone-subsidized-price.html

Seems like some variability in success though, Best Buy trying to contact people saying there is a problem with the order and such. If I were in your situation the "upgrade from basic phone" or "transfer to basic phone line method" would be more reliable and proven. If you want to use the upgrade on the basic line do this:

UDP phone and dumb phone with upgrade
Line1 UDP
Line2 dumb phone (Upgrade available)

  1. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  2. Activate smartphone on Line1
  3. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

If you want to use the upgrade from the UDP line:

One Smart phone with UDP
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 dumb phone

  1. Transfer upgrade from Line1 to Line2
  2. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  3. Activate smartphone on Line1
  4. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

You don't need a Best Buy. You can do this all online on the Verizon website and phones delivered to you. It's best to minimize interaction with a liver Verizon person as much as possible. The method below should work for you if you want to use the upgrade on one of your basic phones:

UDP phone and dumb phone with upgrade
Line1 UDP
Line3 (or Line4) dumb phone (Upgrade available)

  1. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line3(or Line4), select data plan
  2. Activate smartphone on Line1
  3. Pending data plan on Line3(or Line4) will drop off in a week

If you tell me what smartphones are on the current UDP lines and what phone you intend to buy I can be more specific on what to do with the SIMs if you need. But basically if the SIM in your current UDP line is compatible with the SIM in your new smartphone you can activate the new smartphone by just taking the SIM from the UDP line and put it in the new smartphone when it arrives.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm looking to upgrade my Droid X (which is on unlimited data but doesn't have a SIM card) to an HTC One M8 on the discounted price. This UDP phone and another phone on a 2 GB plan are up for upgrades, but the basic line isn't. I read about the BB trick in another thread that requires activating your old phone's SIM card in your new phone rather than the new SIM that comes with it, but since I don't have a SIM to begin with, I'm not sure how I'd pull that off. Is there any way I can get the HTC phone at the lower price while still keeping my unlimited data?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am in a similar boat with AndytheG. After hours of searching I am still unsure how to do this without a previous SIM.

I have 1 verizon line (Just me) with an UDP and am still using a Samsung Fascinate (No SIM)

Do I have to upgrade to a dumbphone with a SIM card and then upgrade again?
TIA!
