[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

And by doing it myself I can avoid losing unlimited data (like the rep told me I would)? Thanks for your post!

The rep is correct because what he/she is talking about is a true alternate upgrade in which the S4 would be preordered on Line B and then the phone is activated on Line C once it is shipped. That would cause you to lose your unlimited data on Line B.

However, that is NOT what we are talking about. What we are talking about is to transfer Line B's upgrade to Line C. You should be able to do that online. Then preorder the S4 on Line C. When the S4 is shipped, activate it on Line C. Then get a new SIM card for the S4 for Line B and switch the S4 to Line B.

Ahh got it... how do you go about getting a new SIM card for Line B?

yes, you will keep unlimited if you transfer the upgrade to Line C and activate the phone on Line C and then switch the phone to Line B.

They give them to you for free in the verizon stores or you can order them online.

What are you going to do with Line C - put the phone that was originally on it back on it or move Line B's current phone to Line C? What kind of SIM card does Line B's phone have now and what kind will the S4 have (micro, nano, etc).

You don't need a new SIM card, I just did this 4 days ago to get my wife a new phone. Once you get the S4 on line C just log into your Verizon account and activate the old phone you had on line C back onto line C. When you do this it will deactivate the S4, once that is done you don't need a new SIM you just have to activate the S4 onto line B. All of this can be done online by yourself, you don't need to go to the store.

So you just have to type the S4's SIM card number (ICCID) in the SIM card field when you go to switch it to Line B?

Yes, that is what I did. It just takes a few minutes to activate it and your phone will tell you when it is done. Like I said I just did this Sunday and it worked with no problem and she keep the unlimited plan. Also she went from 3G to LTE, still no problem doing it.

Odd. When I did the upgrade swap for my Note 2, I couldn't activate the Note 2 on my line with the sim that came with it for the other line (after it had been activated on that line).

The phone rep said that once a sim card was used on a line it was tied to that line forever and couldn't be used on another line. Maybe they were wrong? I hope so. I'm going to do this again soon to get a S4 for a different line and I'm not looking foward to having to get the new sim.

You know how those phone rep people are LOL. But seriously I just did this Sunday and we have had no problems with either the old phone on the limited line or the new phone on the unlimited.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks. Can you clarify any time frames?

When I got my new phone, I immediately activated it on the limited line. A few minutes later I tried using the website to re-activate the old phone on that line but was unable to. I forget the exact message but it was something about recent upgrade or some such nonsense. I called CS and they were able to get the old phone re-activated with some trouble (rep had to ask for help from someone else I think). Then I immediately tried activating my line with the sim that came with the new phone (and used in the activation just a few minutes prior) and was unable to. Called CS again and they tried and couldn't get it activated either. I of course didn't mention the switching I was doing. But when the rep realized I had activated the sim on another line, they said it couldn't be used for another line and said to get a new sim.

Anyways. Long story short, did you have to wait 10 minutes? A day? etc between the multiple activations? Thanks.

From the Verizon store to internet was maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Got online as soon as I got home. From activating the old phone and re-activating the new phone it was just one after the other, no real time in between. Maybe the site was just having a problem for you that day or they have updated the system maybe.

This has always been my understanding, too. Once the SIM is activated on a particular line, it can't be used on another line because it is now permanently associated with that line. That's why to switch two 4G LTE phones between lines, you just swap SIM cards.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

All I know is the phone has a SIM, and was activated in the store on one line then brought home deactivated and re activated on another line with the same SIM card. Have had no problems with either phone line since then.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I only have one phone - no Family or Sharing plan. But my one phone is on a corporate discount plan (UPS - even though I haven't worked there in a few years!). Is there a way for me to upgrade (I am SO anxious to dump my HTC Thunderdud for the Samsung Galaxy S4) without losing my unlimited data, which I've been grandfathered in to for a while (been with VZ since early 2000s)? I know it may be addressed in this thread somewhere, and I apologize, but it's 19 pages and I'm at work, so a quick answer would be great! My upgrade goes in to effect in August, I think and I want to be able to plan ahead if I do lose my unlimited so I can make other arrangements, if necessary.

Thanks!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

A quick question for those in the know, just wanted to make sure I have everything straightened out before I try to upgrade on the unlimited plan.

We have a family share plan with 2 unlimited lines and 2 limited. This is what I will try to do:
1) Use the upgrade for the unlimited line to buy a subsidized phone
2) Activate the new phone on a limited line
3) Reactive old phone on the limited line
4) Transfer new phone to unlimited plan using online...something?

Any help or pointers would be appreciated!

Step 3 and 4 you can do online. When you do 3 it will deactivate the new phone. Then in step 4 just activate the new phone on the unlimited line.

Do not try to upgrade on the unlimited data line. TRANSFER the unlimited data line's upgrade to a line with limited data. Upgrade on the line with limited data.

This is what you do if you have a family share plan with 2 unlimited lines and 2 limited.

1) TRANSFER the unlimited data line's upgrade to a limited data line;
2) Buy a subsidized phone using the upgrade on the limited data line;
3) Activate the new phone on the limited data line;
4) Reactive the old phone on the limited data line; and
5) Get a new SIM card* for the new phone and activate it on the unlimited data line.

*some people say you don't have to get a new SIM card, just type in the existing SIM card's number (ICCID) when you go to activate it on the unlimited data line. I have never tried that so I can't say if it works.

When you say transfer, do you have to go in online and say that you want to switch your upgrade to a different line? I was just going to buy the new phone with the unlimited line but activate on the new line.

And if I could get away without buying a new SIM card that'd be great, guess I should research a little more into that.

yes. Transfer the upgrade FROM the unlimited data line TO the limited data line.

I was just going to buy the new phone with the unlimited line but activate on the new line.
That is a 100% surefire way to lose unlimited data.

You don't buy them. Verizon gives you them for free, either by mail or in stores.

When in the store just tell them you want to transfer the upgrade from one line to another. This is allowed with no problem.

When you do the rest at home online you Do Not need a new SIM. I did this very thing one week ago last Sunday and have had no problems at all!

I have an upgrade available for my unlimited plan, but will I lose my september upgrade date for my dumb phone by transfering the upgrade as mentioned in this thread?
