[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

But he put the dumbphone back on so the smartphone is on the unlimited line, not the pay as you go line.

Doesn't matter, at the time the smartphone was on the dumb phone line, it must have been on a tiered data plan. Happened to me, I was charged for a few mb used on the dumb phone line when I had the smartphone on the line, next month, it was credited back to me. You may be charged for one days usage for data, but that's it. Since it is a large amount, I would call in, the csr should have no qualms removing the pay as you go charge.

Tiered data is a required feature of the smartphone. If he had the smartphone on the dumb phone line for 15 days, he would have to pay half months tiered data charge for his usage, even if he had used 0mb data during that time

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

When using the upgrade on an unlimited data line for the basic phone, what is recommended: going to the Verizon store and telling them there, doing it online and ordering the phone from MyVerizon, or going to another store such as Best Buy and just letting them know that you plan on using your upgrade on a basic line? I was thinking of just doing it on MyVerizon so that there are no issues and just wait for the phone to be shipped.

There is no problem doing it in the store, they don't care if you transfer a upgrade at all. So if the phone you want is in the store I would just do it there.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hey guys, just read through most of the thread and just wanna clarify how this would work..sorry!

I'm currently on a Nationwide Talk & Text family plan. It currently has:
Line 1 - Smartphone (Unl Data)
Line 2 - Smartphone (2GB)
Line 3 - Basic
Line 4 - Basic

No phone is currently under any contract and all phones are eligible for an upgrade. Does this method still work if you're pre-ordering a phone? (S4) Because the order wants you to make changes to the plan..

Nobody else in the family plan is interested in upgrading their phone. Would it be possible to just upgrade Line 2's phone to the S4 preorder, then transfer it to my unl data line when it arrives?

Yes, you could do that.

Awesome. What would happen to the upgrades , then?
If I got the S4 on Line 2 and transferred it to Line 1, where does Line 1 and Line 2's upgrade go? Could Line 3/4's upgrade be transferred to 1/2 later?

Thanks!

You must have a much nicer store than the one near me. First, they would lie and try to say you will lose unlimited. Second, they would act like you were stealing something from them if you did it.

I wouldn't do it in a store. Not all store reps are decent. Some like the ones at my store, suck.

Line 2's upgrade would reset to 24 months from now. Line 1's upgrade would stay the same.

Could Line 3/4's upgrade be transferred to 1/2 later?
First, you can't have more than 1 eligible upgrade on a line. So no, you can't transfer an upgrade to Line 1 since it is already eligible for an upgrade. Second, don't ever transfer an upgrade to Line 1 and use it. You will lose unlimited data on Line 1 if you do that.

After you use Line 2's upgrade, you want to transfer Line 1's upgrade to Line 2 and use Line 1's upgrade on Line 2.

Taking about just transferring the upgrade and getting the phone in the store. Would do the rest online.

At my store, they would know what was up and be rude. I can't stand the reps at my store. Much nicer reps on the phone.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Update: Went ot the Verizon store today, got my SIM card, and they were way nice about it, even the manager said they see this a lot and they do it for people only if they specifically ask. If they just come in asking for an upgrade they won't do it for them though.

I'm trying to say this in as many places as I can for records keeping: An employee at the Verizon store said the data charges was free because it was a software update. Dunno if it's true, but, it was said today, May 2nd 2013, at around 6:30 PM. If I get charged for that data, I'll call up verizon and show them all the places I publicly said that.

But yeah, I'm probably going to be doing the same to my other Unlimited line tomorrow too, worked amazing, only problems I had was bad luck and my Comcast Internet going out the day I got the phone and had to go online to Verizon's website on a 3G phone(most likely why my $1.99/MB problem happened, WiFi wasn't available at the time), and the SIM card. If Verizon still sold the Galaxy Nexus's at their stores I would've done it to the other unlimited line right then.

PS: The chill employees at the store I went to said they think Verizon could and might try to find a way to end this method.

Thanks. I'm gonna preorder the S4 on Line 2. Hopefully this survives for the month!

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to clarify: It's still fine if I'm going from a 3G to 4G phone on Line 1, right?

I am sure that Verizon will eventually end this. I just hope the loopehole lasts until my upgrade.

However, this is another reason to not keep reminding the Verizon employees that we are keeping unlimited data and our subsidized phones by doing this.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Nice. What's the best way to get the brand new phone onto Line 1 and retain Line 2's current phone?
I'm thinking: Activate new phone on Line 2. Then use vzw "switch devices" and swap Line 1 phone onto Line 2. Then activate Line 2's old phone back onto Line 2

Or would it be to Activate new phone on Line 2 > Activate Line 2's old phone again > Activate brand new phone straight to Line 1

Sorry for all the questions! You guys are awesome for answering them. :D I just really don't wanna make a mistake! Lol

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Activate new phone on Line 2 > Activate Line 2's old phone again on Line 2 > Activate new phone on Line 1
This is how I did it but I had to get another SIM card for Line 1 to do that. However others here say you can use the same SIM card by typing the ICCID number in the field when you go to activate it on Line 1. I have never tried that.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Could someone walk me through how I could use this for my situation? I have a guy who will really work with me on this if I have some instructions on how it should go.

I have three lines that are all eligible for an upgrade:
Line One - Flip phone with no data plan. No desire for a data plan. Wants a new dumb phone.
Line Two - unlimited data
Line Three - unlimited data.

Line two is the most important right now. Phone doesn't work at all so I really need a new one. And my unlimited data. We're willing to add a dummy line or two if it means keeping unlimited. It will still come out cheaper than just buying a new phone. What's the best way to get upgrades or new phones for as many phones as possible (preferably all three) and keep our two unlimited data lines?

Line One - Flip phone with no data plan. No desire for a data plan. Wants a new dumb phone.
Line Two - unlimited data
Line Three - unlimited data.

Ok, but this may be the last one I do because I think the instructions are clear.

A. To get the smarthphone on Line 2 the quickest:

1) Upgrade Line 1 to a new smartphone;
2) Choose 2GB data plan since it is the cheapest;
3) Activate new smartphone on Line 1;
4) Reactivate flip phone on Line 1 and drop the data plan; and
5) Activate new smartphone on Line 2 (may require a new SIM card).

B. To get a new dumbphone on Line 1:

1) Transfer Line 2's upgrade to Line 1;
2) Buy a dumbphone with the upgrade that is now on Line 1; and
3) Activate the dumbphone on Line 1.

C. When you are ready to get a new smartphone on Line 3:

1) Transfer Line 3's upgrade to Line 1;
2) Buy a new smartphone on Line 1 using the upgrade that is now on Line 1;
3) Choose a 2GB data plan;
4) Activate the new smartphone on Line 1;
5) Reactivate the dumbphone on Line 1 and drop the data plan; and
6) Activate the new smartphone on Line 3 (may require a new SIM card).

You need to buy from Verizon, Best Buy or Costco to avoid a $400 fee since you are dropping a data plan or switching a new phone off of a line before 181 days. Verizon, Best Buy and Costco don't charge the $400 fee, but all other retailers do.

No offense to you but Verizon csr comments about current policies are a number of times wrong. Verizon csr speculating on possible policy changes mean nothing, unless there is official documentation. I don't even fully trust Verizon exec, who have said incorrect stuff before. Case and point, Shammo said that upgrading from 3g to 4GLTE would force you into a share everything plan, no exclusion for buying at full retail, which is completely wrong. Verizon did back pedal the next day correcting their cfo's statement.

Keep in mind, this is the same guy who said that unlimited is just a word or doesn't mean anything

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a question.. I did this process yesterday when I purchased Samsung Galaxy Note 2.. I used to own Samsung Droid Charge.. what happened was, the store sales rep at the store told me that there is a way to keep my unlimited data and unlimited text messaging (Because I'm at a deaf plan, I cannot hear), if only I have to add a line and he could transfer my phone number and the plan to THAT phone line and it worked. HOWEVER, he suggested to do so, I have to pay extra more money to my bill every months, so he did and it was transferred. I have a different number and different phone plan for Droid Charge, is it possible to call in Verizon Wireless over the phone and ask them to remove the second line (not the new phone, the old phone with the new number?) I'm a little lost and don't know what to do from there.. any help everyone? please let me know as soon as possible thank you!
