[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, you want to upgrade line 3 which is non-udp line and than you're going to swap that with line one. This should be no problem and no it shouldn't change your monthly bill. I'm no expert but that is pretty simple method of upgrade you're doing. But note you will need a sim to activate it on line 3 before swapping it to line 1. Just call in and ask them to ship it to or just it do it in store since you're upgrading using a non-udp line and don't have to worry about like udp.
Thanks very much for the info. I just have a few more questions. My Droid Razr that I am replacing has a Micro Sim and the new Droid Maxx has a Nano Sim but I do have a cutter and adapter. Should I simply put the Micro Sim from my Razr in the Maxx? If so would it automatically show the Maxx on my unlimited line then on my account without having to further activate? I assume I would then add my regular phone back on the third line?
Sorry to ask so many question but I don't want to mess up.
Thanks again.

Edit: Alternatively, can I just not activate the Droid Maxx on line 3 and simply just activate it on line 1 without doing anything to line 3? If I do this will I need a separate SIM than the one that ships with the Droid Maxx?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I went ahead and activated it, then did the switch. Every thing cleared out like normal. I should have just done it that way to begin with. I was just tempted by the thought of not having to mess with dumb phone, and the fact that I read the data plan never got added to dumb line... but both were wrong. Next time I stock to the tried and true OP method.
So basically you did the following?:
1. Insert the new sim that comes with the phone into the new smartphone and activate it on the dumb line.
2. Switch the new smartphone onto the unlimited line.
3. Reactivate the dumb phone on the dumb line.

Do I have this right?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

hey guys I have a quick question what if I pick up the phone from the store and tell them its a gift and don't activate it, will that work?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I'm planning on getting the LG G3, but would obviously like to keep my UDP. Has anyone had experience with pre-ordering a device and keeping UDP with the method described in this thread? Thanks.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I had the razr maxx and the sim was the same for my new LGG2.
Yes, I do... We have 4 lines all 4 with UDP and 3 of them have 4G. I'm doing this for my mom, the only line without 4G and she wants the LG G2 that needs micro sim card size. And my dad has the Droid Razar Maxxx I think it also takes the same sim size can someone confirm this. I can check it when my dad comes home. I also have another phone that is laying around that is a galaxy nexus and of course it has 4g. My question is how should I do it? Is it better to have the sim ordered for the galaxy nexus and have it cut (which will need a sim cutter and extra process) or I was thinking telling them I will just swtching the two phones between the razar maxx and 3g and that way I will get the same sim card size.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I am also interested in pre ordering the LG G3. However after talking with some verzion reps if I transfer my upgrade I to my wifes line that is a tiered plan and activate it on hers that I will have to pay the $199 fee instead of $99 special now. Hopefully then if I don't use the SIM card that comes with the phone and activate with my Wife's current SIM and then transfer phone back to my line I will be able to keep UDP. Currently only the verizon site is allowing you to pre-order since I can't find the verizon version on Bestbuys site yet. Bestbuy is however letting ATT customers pre-order the LG G3

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'd like to know the answer to this is well. Itching to get my fingers on the G3. I can't imagine preordering would negatively impact this process at all...

If you can wait I would.
Also have you read this:
LG G3 vs. HTC One (M8): Duel duo - page 12 - GSMArena.com
(should be page 12 on the link)
After reading it I changed my mind about the G3. May wait for the rumored M8 Prime or S5 Prime.

I really want a nice camera, and the M8 seems to lag a bit there. I've been reading about all three devices for a couple of weeks, and I really keep fluctuating between the S5 and G3. I have an S3 currently, and I enjoy the device. And the S5 does have some better specs than the G3...but from what I have read, the G3 is better built. Sigh. Tough choices.

Yeah Agree. If you can I would hold off and see what comes down the pipe later this year. Like I mentioned, I'm waiting to hear more about the "Prime" phones. I did my wifes upgrade and got the M8, now my line is eligible, so as long as the Best Buy thing still works later this year I'll attempt it on one of those devices.

If you're trying to transfer the upgrade from udp line to a non-udp line than you can do that online at verizonwireless.com ... is that what you're trying to do? Try to avoid Verizon reps as much as possible.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I just placed an order for LG G2 for my mom on BB site. Will keep you guys posted on how it goes. This is a secondary line so hopefully everything goes smooth.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

well guys, i just completed the order tfor the lg g3! i transferred the upgrade to my wife's line, so someone correct me. When i receive the phone what should i do? my wife currently has an iphone 5. so the sim card prob. wont fit. so my thoughts are to activate the phone on her line which in this case i guess i use the sim card they send me? then after that remove the g3 out of her line and activate the iphone back to her line. the just through my lg g2 sim card on the g3?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I pre-ordered it on Verizon website. Cost me 99$. It allowed me to transfer the upgrade to my wife's line. I'm thinking if for some reason the meid number is what keeps me from activating it on my line, then I'm thinking I can swap it with someone or sell it and just buy another one with different meid of course. Thoughts guys?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I want to thank everyone who has posted to this forum concerning the Best Buy method for keeping the unlimited data plan (UDP) with Verizon. This method worked for me.

My wife has had a HTC Incredibe, which has worked great until about 2 weeks ago. You could barely hear her during a phone conversation. The only way to even try to comprehend what she was saying was if she would yell into the phone.....very frustrating.

I did not want to buy a new phone at the unsubsidized price, nor did I want her to lose her UDP. She only uses about 2gb a month, but Verizon's new plans are more expensive than the old plan we are on now, so we would be getting less for more.

So, I researched online and found out that there is the switch method where you buy the phone on another line from Verizon and then switch it to the line you really want it on, or you buy a phone from Best Buy. I liked the Best Buy method the best as it seemed the easiest and cleanest method.

We only had one problem......her phone was a 3g phone with no SIM card. So, I waited on Craigslist and someone close by posted a Droid RAZR for $30,which takes a micro SIM card. I did not receive the card with the phone, as the guy had PKU-locked it. We took that phone immediately to the Verizon store, told them we wanted to have the Droid RAZR replace her HTC Incredible on our line. The Verizon representative put a new SIM card in it and helped set it up for her.

That evening I ordered a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Best Buy for the $49.99 price (I will be getting a $50 Best Buy gift card as well). I went through the upgrade eligibility process and of course, I was eligible for an upgrade. The phone was already on the primary line, so I did not have to make any changes on the Verizon website. I did receive that notification that my plan would change, because the unlimited data plan was no longer available. I proceeded through the checkout process and had the phone shipped to my home.

It arrived today. The SIM card was already in the phone, but the battery and the phone were in their original packaging. I took the SIM card out and pitched it in the trash. I powered down the Droid RAZR and took the SIM card out and placed it into the new Samsung Galaxy S4. I turned it on and it activated, and then updated the software. Almost immediately the phone showed up on Verizon's website on the primary line, with a new contract extension date, and no change to UDP. I did not have to contact Verizon for anything, or log into Verizon website. My wife is one happy camper.

I do not know anything about the "switch order" that may be on my account. I have no plans to switch anything anytime soon, and will have that removed if it does not drop off at some point.

Screenshots attached......Good Luck!!!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Hi guys, so I've looked through a decent number of posts but didn't see anyone who already had a phone and wasn't upgrading.

So I've got my current 3G phone with the UDP and a micro SD and I'm trying to change that to a 4G phone with a nano SD while keeping the UDP. When I activated it on one of my 2Gb/month lines and tried to switch devices, it let me pick the devices and suggested I back them up, then brought me to a screen that said,

"Note: Failure to complete the following steps can result in your device not properly activating."

And then it wants me to choose a tiered data plan for both. My only options are to choose one for each or hit cancel and return to the main account page. Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

To everyone who's posting about micro sim card cutters or downloading the templates, when i got my Galaxy s5 i had a regular sim card on my old Droid Bionic. The new phone comes with the micro and with a pair of scissors, a steady hand and decent eye sight you can align the old and new and snip away. There is a little flexibility there. I cut less than the actual size and used a fingernail file till it fit nice and snug. I'm just putting this out here so whoever can save 5, 10 bucks on a cutter. Or the time with templates and printing. But make sure you have plenty of light and a clear work area. AND TAKE YOUR TIME!!!! It took me about 10 mins and i was good to go!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK, I got it to work and I just wanted to share what I did.
I had the following:
Line 1. Droid Razr on unlimited that was eligible for an upgrade.
Line 2. Droid Razr on unlimited that was eligible for an upgrade.
Line 3. Basic phone that was eligible for an upgrade.
I ordered a Droid Maxx on Line 3 and picked the 2 GB data package. The phone came today and I turned it on and activated it (it came with a Sim in it). I then chatted with customer service and told them I wanted to move the Droid Maxx to Line 1 and re activate my basic phone on Line 3. They said because my basic phone was an old Alltel phone I couldn't add it but that I could move the Droid Maxx to Line 1 and not lose my unlimited data. I would then have to buy a cheap basic Verizon phone and add that to Line 3 so that is what I did. I ordered a cheap used Verizon flip phone from Amazon which I will add to Line 3.

Soon I will transfer the upgrade on Line 2 to Line 3 and do this whole process again.
