Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price
Got an update for you guys, and I actually did this the other day.
What you have to do is actually do the upgrade in Best Buy (I can't confirm for any other store). You have to be on a family plan and have another line that does NOT have unlimited data. Ask your rep to do an alternate upgrade and use the line with the unlimited data and put the phone onto the line that does not have the unlimited data. Yes I know, sounds a little backwards, but I can confirm (at least for me) that it does work. I just recently upgraded to the S5 through these means.
So this is a step by step:
1) Upgrade in a Best Buy 2) Perform an alternate upgrade 3) Use the line WITH the unlimited data and give the upgrade to a line that does NOT have unlimited data 4) Put back the old device on the line that was alternately upgraded 5) Put new phone back onto line that has the unlimited data.
Verizon gives you 14 days to back out (remember the first day you purchase your phone is counted as day 1) of your new contract. This will NOT work for Edge, so if you wanted to buy the phone through that means, sorry, won't work.
When you do this, please be kind to whoever you're working with and let them know your intentions in advance so that they can help you out. Ask them to print out your account details (or the old device information from the account details) so that they have the information for the old phone on hand (especially helpful if you don't have that phone with you).
The way it works is that BEAST (the system BB uses to process upgrades, new accounts, etc.) will check to see if the line that is receiving the phone has unlimited data. It doesn't really check if the line that's donating the upgrade has it or not. As long as the line that's receiving the new phone doesn't have unlimited data, then BEAST will keep all the features of the donating line, which is the line with the unlimited data. Also, it will prompt the associate if the customer is aware of the fact that he/she will be losing unlimited data. If this pops up at any point, just let the associate know that that is not what you want to be doing. They'll understand, and you can just go home and purchase online and do the keep SIM thing.
