[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for the feedback, is that the best course? The new Sims come with NFC. Is there anything else I would be missing out on if I used a three year old Sim?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just to clarify, if you already have an upgrade on the dumbphone line, can you just use that to buy the subsidized smartphone, then reactivate the dumbphone, then put the SIM card from your current smartphone into the new smartphone? Or does the upgrade have to be one that was transferred from a smartphone line, for this trick to work?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I just found this site by searching for ideas on how to not lose my UDP and not pay 600.00 for a new phone. I'm nervous, but really want to give it a try. I currently have a Motorola Droid Razr. I checked the Sim card size, and it appears to be a micro-sd card. Can anyone else tell me if I'm correct? I want to switch to a Galaxy S5. and my google searches say that the card is the same.

Before I order, I want to verify with those that have already gone through the process the card sizes match.

I've tested the Best Buy website and so far it's allowing me to upgrade and keep my UDP. I've tried attaching my screenshot.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Sorry - not sure how to edit my post. I found the Edit Post button now - I guess I wasn't originally logged in.

My Plan is currently the NATIONWIDE TALK SHARE 700. I have two lines:
1. Smartphone - Motorola Droid - eligible to upgrade
2. Dumbphone -upgrade not eligible until 2/2015.

The plan is to upgrade the smartphone. Receive the phone and immediately take out the sim card and put my current one from my Droid in the Samsung. Then turn on the phone and hopefully it will work.

I followed all of the directions and successfully upgraded from Droid Bionic to Galaxy S5 and kept my udp. But my contacts have disappeared! I cut my sim so there's no going back to my Bionic, or is there? Help!

Buy a SIM card adapter off eBay or Amazon

I wish I would've waited longer to upgrade using this method. The Note 4 should get released around September.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Got an update for you guys, and I actually did this the other day.

What you have to do is actually do the upgrade in Best Buy (I can't confirm for any other store). You have to be on a family plan and have another line that does NOT have unlimited data. Ask your rep to do an alternate upgrade and use the line with the unlimited data and put the phone onto the line that does not have the unlimited data. Yes I know, sounds a little backwards, but I can confirm (at least for me) that it does work. I just recently upgraded to the S5 through these means.

So this is a step by step:
1) Upgrade in a Best Buy 2) Perform an alternate upgrade 3) Use the line WITH the unlimited data and give the upgrade to a line that does NOT have unlimited data 4) Put back the old device on the line that was alternately upgraded 5) Put new phone back onto line that has the unlimited data.

Verizon gives you 14 days to back out (remember the first day you purchase your phone is counted as day 1) of your new contract. This will NOT work for Edge, so if you wanted to buy the phone through that means, sorry, won't work.

When you do this, please be kind to whoever you're working with and let them know your intentions in advance so that they can help you out. Ask them to print out your account details (or the old device information from the account details) so that they have the information for the old phone on hand (especially helpful if you don't have that phone with you).

The way it works is that BEAST (the system BB uses to process upgrades, new accounts, etc.) will check to see if the line that is receiving the phone has unlimited data. It doesn't really check if the line that's donating the upgrade has it or not. As long as the line that's receiving the new phone doesn't have unlimited data, then BEAST will keep all the features of the donating line, which is the line with the unlimited data. Also, it will prompt the associate if the customer is aware of the fact that he/she will be losing unlimited data. If this pops up at any point, just let the associate know that that is not what you want to be doing. They'll understand, and you can just go home and purchase online and do the keep SIM thing.

Do you still the bionic? If it won't let you use the phone in wifi only mode get a SIM card adapter. Then export all you contacts and them import them as Google contacts. They should then show up on you new phone.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thank you for the responses and advice regarding cutting the Sim in my Bionic and ordering a new one later which is probably the way I'll go. One further question; I have an LG G2 on line 2 which I successfully upgraded last year and kept UDP on line 2. For some reason the G2 came with two Sim cards, I used the one already in the G2 to activate on the dumb phone line and then I used the spare in the G2 box to move it to line 2. Do you think it would work if I use the previously activated on dumb phone line G2 Sim card to activate the G3 on the dumb line? After which I would use the Sim that comes with the G3 to move to line 1.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I have a Bionic that I originally bought through BB and I have UDP and am ready to go LG G3 using one of the methods posted here. I went to the BB site and although they are allowing me to keep my plan with the caveat of "If your new device requires a data plan, you'll need to select one here — even if you already have one on your existing plan. This ensures that you end up with a compatible data plan." - There's no shipping option for the phone, only in-store pickup. So they removed the shipping option???

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

You get the phone cheap because you promise to enter a new 2 year contract. There are no new 2 year unlimited data contracts. After going through this process if u log in to my Verizon does it show 2 yr contract and under data unlimited? If not you have no new contract so you basically owe somebody the full price for the new phone.

1) Does this Best Buy system to keep unlimited data plan still work?

2)Anybody ever get bagged for this and told they owe a thousand bucks for extra data used since they should have been on 2gb plan from day 1?

3) Does the note 3 use the same size and type of sim as the g3?

4) If you simply insert the old sim in the new phone and turn it on instead of calling you lose unlimited data?

5) Can old sim be transferred back and forth between phones to alternate just for fun?

6) My wife has a 2gb plan under my account on a separate line. I have unlimited so we obviously are not on a share everything plan. Does the fact I have 2 lines on my account screw up this system somehow?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So I have had an upgrade since March but haven't done it because I don't want to lose my unlimited date.
I am so happy I found this thread and want to thank everybody for their input.
I do have a few questions.
I will be going from a galaxy nexus to the htc one m8.
If i am successful and can get the M8 shipped to me, All i should have to do is cut down my sim card and put it in the m8 and it all the sudden work or is there some other step in activation.
I ask because most of the problems I have seen through this method seem to be when users called verizon or BB.

1) You can only keep UDP if you do the BestBuy.com method and keeping your old SIM or the method that I previously posted (where you do an alternate upgrade, placing the phone on a non-UDP line and doing a hardware swap afterwards).
2) Not that I have heard of, to be honest I was scared that this was going to happen to me but it's been a good two billing cycles and it still states I have unlimited data.
3) Yes, the Note 3 uses the same SIM as the G3 (micro-SIM).
4) No, if you do the BestBuy.com method and keeping your old SIM when the new phone comes in, it will work.
5) Yes, and Verizon's system should register that your phone is also changing.
6) It shouldn't. You can do the in-store method I mentioned and put the phone on her line and do a hardware swap to make everything the way it should be.

Yes, calling Verizon or BestBuy will probably end up with you losing your UDP.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Just wanted to share this update:

Phone arrived on Thursday, with the new sim card already installed. I followed the advice here and replaced it with the existing sim card from my Galaxy S3, turned it on, and voila! Just logged in to Verizon and it shows that I have the S5 with my new contract end date and with my UDP intact. I had a minor issue with Foxfi, but that's been resolved. Now to customize this bad boy and make it perfect! Thanks so much for this thread!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can someone help clarify in case I misread or misunderstood.

Based off of my current plan, 1 basic, 3 UDP:

1 basic = no upgrade avail
3 UDP = upgrade avail

Transferring an upgrade from the UDP to basic will not affect the UDP? Then I just activate it on the basic and the deactivate it and put it on UDP line no problem? Rinse and repeat for the other UDP and I assume I can just do this through verizonwireless website also?

Thanks!

You at correct. When you order it online through Verizon the online invoice will show the line it is coming from. Don't worry about that. Just activate it on the dumb line and put it in the line you want. Then drop the data on the dumb line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I looked through a big chunk of this thread, but I couldn't find the answer to this. Here's my scenario:

Line 1: s3 unlimited upgradable
Line 2: s3 4gb upgradable in 10 days

If I transfer the line 1 upgrade to line 2 (and switch it to line 1) will line 2 still be upgradable in 10 days or does that go away?
