[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

ok so im gonna try this bestbuy thing and get a new phone finally.

Line 1 - primary - basic - upgrade eligible - getting a smartphone free from Vzw upon upgrade...
Line 2 - UDP - this the one i wanna use BB method
Line 3 - basic - upgrade eligible

I know I've asked about a month back but had an emergency and couldnt go thru with process but since G3 is only a buck now's the right time lol. Ok so one page says I have to pick the 2gb choice but next page says keeping existing plan, I get that and DO NOT use provided sim, use my sim. But my question is do I do it on Line 2 since thats the line getting the phone or do I have to transfer something around...?! So terrified of losing my UDP lol kinda my only reason for staying with Vzw, oh yeah that and the fact that everyone else here sux smh. Need/wanna do this while those bad boys are a buck ;-)

Oh and how long does shipping usually take? Knowing my luck it'll take a month and make me lose my return period...smh...

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Did I miss somewhere where the original method no longer works? I ordered a Droid Maxx for my wife and got it today. I transferred her upgrade to a feature phone line and then upgraded that line to get the MAXX. I activated the MAXX on the former feature phone line. It's been an hour and now I went online to try to activate the old phone back onto that line. I got an error saying that the old feature phone could not be activated back onto that same line. Did Verizon change something so that this no longer works?

This is the error I get. I'm a little apprehensive about calling Verizon to switch the old phone back onto the line:

In November they made a data requirement in lines when they are upgraded to smartphones. It appears to effect it on transfers also. You probably need to return the phone if you don't want data on that line.

I would do it again. You could probably transfer the upgrade then just activate it directly on your unlimited line. Someone could hopefully confirm this.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. If I have a feature phone line without data, and transfer an upgrade from a UDP line to that, and then use that to get a new smart phone, when I transfer the phone back to the UDP line I will have to keep data on the feature phone line?

I don't understand your second suggestion at all. Transfer the upgrade directly to the UDP line and keep UDP? I thought the whole point of this was to transfer the upgrade away from the UDP line in order to keep the UDP?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Success story with a caveat - just picked up a Galaxy S5 in the recent Best Buy sale. Popped in my old SIM after cutting it down, and it works!

HOWEVER: I do have one issue that I'm hoping someone can help me with. On my old phone I had Visual Voicemail - and I'm having problems with it on the S5. It keeps giving me a notification saying, "Due to a change in your phone, we need to update your Visual Voice Mail Service. When we finish the update, Basic Visual Voice Mail will be provided free of charge." I'm then given the option to "Subscribe to Basic Visual Voice Mail" or "Call Voice Mail." If I click on the first option, I'm taken to a screen that gives me the options "Subscribe to Premium Visual Voice Mail $2.99 per month" or "Subscribe to Basic Visual Voice Mail (included)."

If I click the second option, I get an error that says, "Sorry, we ran into a problem with your order. Please call Customer Service at 800-922-0204 from a different phone to complete your order." Am I safe to call this number, and will my unlimited data be taken away if I do?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK, I called the Verizon number and the rep was able to put the old feature phone back on its original line. I just checked and there is no data associated with that line (pay per use). I was able to then transfer the new phone to my wife's line, swapping her Razr Maxx for the new Droid MAXX and she still has Unlimited. Seems like it worked. Strange quirk, though, as it still shows that she is upgrade eligible even though I just used her upgrade to get this phone. Weird. Wonder if that will drop off after a few days?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I transferred the upgrade through Verizon from an unlimited line to dumbphone line. I just sold the phone and never activated it. It was when I was worried about throttling and wanted to get back under contract.

Thanks. Did you end up getting stuck with a data plan on your dumb phone? Or since you never activated it the data plan never kicked in?

I believe it was before the data requirement. I never activated it on the line so the data plan was not added to the line.

If it won't let you drop your data, the answer is yes.

To use your upgrade I would either do the best buy method or do the same thing you did but never actually activate the phone on the dumb-phone line.

Do you have a pending activation on your account? If yes, then do NOT call Verizon until it is removed. If you do not have a pending activation, feel free to call Verizon.

This is probably a dumb question, but where do I check to see if I have any pending activations? I don't see anything on the main page of my VZW account.

I have the same thing I used an upgrade on my unlimited line. I transfer the upgrade to my wife's line so I could keep my unlimited and my line still shows that I have an upgrade available. View attachment 152373

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wanted to let everyone know that I did the upgrade switch Saturday from UDP to tiered. Did the switch and placed the order all online. Got the phone today, was having problems activating it. First call was to customer service was all automated then I was able to activate it on the tiered line. Still showed pending order online, so I called and talked to someone this time. He was actually very courteous, which kind of surprised me. He did some test texts and calls to make sure the phone was working right on the tiered, then put through the transfers on his end while I was using the new phone on the tiered line. Turned the phone off, waited a bit, turned it back on and now I have the upgraded phone on my UDP, still in tact, with an upgrade date 12/2/16. I still have the pending order on the tiered line, but I assume that will fall off eventually.

When I went to the store Saturday to try doing it there, as I wanted to trade in a crappy G'Nex, the rep kept telling me that I would lose my UDP for switching upgrades. I insisted I wouldn't, after 5 minutes of back and forth, he went into the backroom, claimed 1 person said I would and another said I wouldn't. So he would just run it and see. Then told me they were out of the Turbos, which is what I went in for, so I left at that point. Wasted 2 hours in store for what I did online in a matter of minutes.

Did you upgrade in store or online/over phone? I ask because I did that the switcheroo and my UDP line still said upgrade available until I activated the new phone on the tiered line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I checked again today and there is no data plan on the feature phone line.

Just put data block on that line by going to the Verizon website. If it lets you turn on data block, there can't possibly be a data plan on that line. :)

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

For the Best Buy method, does it have to be the primary phone on the account? I've seen it stated before that it had to be the primary line on the account but I've gone through a mock order with one of the other lines, my son's and got all the way to the last step of completing the order and everything looks the same? Seems like I could complete the order and when it comes just take the SIM from my son's old phone with UDP line and put it in the new phone. If you can't order on one of the secondary UDP phones at what step does it mess up? Also seems that with Best Buy you avoid the $30 activation fee.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does anybody have an update within the last 30-60 days that pending activation has fell off?

Been about 22 days since I did the BB method and pending activation is still showing on mine FYI.
