[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So basically on ordering from Best Buy's website, there is a option that says "keep your existing plan"? And of course, you just make sure of that by using your prior phone's SIM card? So, in that regard, the website, assuming you keep records on the screens, backs you up?

Correct.
There is a warning that VZW no longer offers unlimted data plans and the line will be upgraded to the 2GB monthly plan which everyone sees. Then on pages 2 and 3 during the checkout process the screen shows "keep existing plan."

I completed this process back in Sept 2014 and have kept my UDP.

Soo....tempted....get the Note 3.....gah.....1 freaking dollar.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Where on best buy site does it have the option for keep existing plan?
I don't think it matters what you choose. The changes seem to be tied to the SIM card sent in the new device. Since it's never used, nothing changes.

Sent from whatever device I happen to be using today using Tapatalk

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

thank you all for the help,

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have an UDP plan I kept after an upgrade 6 months ago by using the old SIM. Now I need a new SIM in order to use Softserve on the phone (new SIM has enhaces security for the Softserve product). Will a new SIM I get from VZ be safe to put in my phone in terms of keeping the UDP?

Do you mean Softcard? Which phone do you have? If it's an Android, disable Softcard and use Google Wallet tap to pay instead. That's what I did when I used Verizon-branded phones. You don't need the special SIM card with Google Wallet.

It will be safe as long as you don't have a pending activation on your account. Can you change features on your plan like mobile hotspot? If so, then it is safe to order a new SIM from Verizon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How can I confirm whether I have a pending activation on my account? Is this a status I can see looking at my account online? So if I understand correctly from your answer, the UDP issue with inserting a new SIM card into a new phone goes away after the new phone is no longer "pending activation.". Thanks again!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yes, I do mean Softcard (linked to a Serve account). I'm interested in the other features of Softcard/Serve, so the Google Wallet app won't work for me. Looking for a way to be able to activate Softcard (which requires a new SIM card with additional security features).

Do the following:

1.) Log into Verizon online
2.) At the top hover over "My Verizon" ---> "My Account" ---->select "My Plans and Services"
3.) Select your line
4.) Click on "Add/Change Features"

If you can add features like Mobile Hotspot, then you do not have a pending activation. As long as you do not have a pending activation, it is safe to order a new SIM.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks. When I go into my account to add Mobile Hotspot I'm able to click on the feature, click to select my phone number I want to add Mobile Hotspot to and then I get what looks to be a live button asking me to confirm the purchase. Is this enough to confirm that I don't have a pending activation or do I have to click to confirm the purchase to see if it's available (and then cancel the feature)? Thanks again.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think I may have screwed myself, but I need one of you to confirm. Background: I have an iPhone 4 and recently purchased an iPhone 6 through Best Buy (following all the necessary steps, so no screw-up there). A few days before that, I contacted Verizon and, through online chat, ordered a nano-SIM card for the new phone (because I didn't have one with the iPhone 4). When my new phone arrived, I took out the included SIM card, slipped in the one I ordered, and powered up the phone. As I didn't have my wireless password handy, I basically powered just turned it on and off, completing none of the activation steps. I then did what a Redditor had done (we had the exact same situation), going through the "Activate or Switch Device" steps in MyVerizon. Things were going smoothly until it asked for my SIM ID, when it told me it wasn't valid. So, that's basically where I'm at right now. I actually tried speaking to a rep online and thought maybe my UDP would stay intact, but I told her to stop the activation process when she informed me that my plan would change. Anyone have any ideas? I should've taken dusoccer10's advice, but I'm hoping there's still a chance at keeping it.

Can you make a phone call with the ordered nano-SIM in your new device?
A completed call is usually the only "activation" that is required with the BestBuy method.

That's all you need to do as you do not need to actually add service. If you had a pending activation, the online system doesn't even show you options to add/remove from the line. Instead, you get a message indicating that you need to activate a new phone.

It is safe for you to order to a new SIM from Verizon that works with Softcard.

Take me through the steps that you did. Did you use your brother's upgrade or yours (i.e. who's line did you use)? Did you order the new nano-SIM before ordering from Best Buy or after placing the order? The method I gave you only works if you used your brother's line.

If you wanted to use your upgrade, then the easiest way to fix this situation is to find a friend who will let you borrow his Verizon LTE phone for a few hours (or has an old one lying around). Basically, use the nano-SIM you have in his phone to activate the phone on your account. Once you get that phone activated, then shut it down and move the nano-SIM into the iPhone 6.

There is a good chance you may need to return the iPhone 6 and start the process all over again.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am planning on upgrading to a Droid Turbo for Line 1.

Ok. You can do the Best Buy method and that will work. The other method you can do is:

1.) Through Best Buy or Verizon, move your upgrade onto the Basic line
2.) Upgrade the basic line to the Turbo and have it shipped to home
3.) Remove the SIM that comes with the Turbo and use the one in the Razr.

Both methods are basically the same in that you just remove the new SIM and use your old one. You will need cut your SIM since the razr uses a micro and the Turbo uses a nano. Either do this yourself or buy a cutter from amazon.

After using a cut down sim would I be able to get a new NFC nano sim at a later date without compromising my UDP?

Correct. After the pending activation falls off, it will be safe to get a new SIM.

Otherwise, you could try to get a new Nano SIM right now and use an adapter to have it work with the Razr. If you did this, then a simple SIM swap would work. It can be a little tricky to get one of these ahead of time, but that would be another possibility.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

A couple of quick questions please... I want to do the Best Buy method on Line 1 on my account now. Then, in a month, I want to do the Best Buy method for line 2 on my account. Will I be able to do the upgrade on line 2 in a month if "My Verizon" is reflecting a "pending activation" from the line 1 transaction?

Also, I am currently not in contract with Verizon. After doing the Best Buy Method, will I then be back in a 2 year contract with them? Just curious.

Thank you!
