[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

A couple of quick questions please... I want to do the Best Buy method on Line 1 on my account now. Then, in a month, I want to do the Best Buy method for line 2 on my account. Will I be able to do the upgrade on line 2 in a month if "My Verizon" is reflecting a "pending activation" from the line 1 transaction?

Also, I am currently not in contract with Verizon. After doing the Best Buy Method, will I then be back in a 2 year contract with them? Just curious.

Thank you!

With the Best Buy method, you do not need to wait a month to upgrade the second line unless you want to. The pending activation only affects the individual line and not the entire account unless you want to make a global change (like move to a More Everything plan). Just make sure to do two separate orders if going this route.

The Best Buy method will put your line back under a two year contract with Verizon. You will lost month-to-month.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Take me through the steps that you did. Did you use your brother's upgrade or yours (i.e. who's line did you use)? Did you order the new nano-SIM before ordering from Best Buy or after placing the order? The method I gave you only works if you used your brother's line.

If you wanted to use your upgrade, then the easiest way to fix this situation is to find a friend who will let you borrow his Verizon LTE phone for a few hours (or has an old one lying around). Basically, use the nano-SIM you have in his phone to activate the phone on your account. Once you get that phone activated, then shut it down and move the nano-SIM into the iPhone 6.

There is a good chance you may need to return the iPhone 6 and start the process all over again.

Hey, dusoccer10! Thanks for getting back to me. Here's what I did: I used my own upgrade when ordering the phone through Best Buy. Before doing that, I ordered the nano-SIM through Verizon (almost a week in advance of ordering the phone). You mentioned getting a friend to let me borrow his Verizon LTE phone for a few hours--my brother is on my plan and has an iPhone 5S, which fits the bill. Would that work? How would I go about activating his phone using my nano-SIM card? Remember that I got that "SIM ID is not valid" message when I tried to use it for my own phone. Could that be done entirely online, or would I have to call Verizon? Again, I really appreciate all of your advice.

Ok, let's see if we can't fix this using the iPhone 5s. Do the following:

1.) Power down both yours and your brother's phones.
2.) Remove the SIM card from the iPhone 5s and place it in the iPhone 6 to activate it on your brother's line. Make phone calls/text to ensure it is fully activated on your brother's line
3.) Log onto Verizon online and click activate or switch devices, select your line, select activating a phone that has been on the account before, select the iPhone 5s from the drop down menu and type in the SIM card number of the new SIM card you ordered from Verizon to activate the iPhone 5s on your line.
4.) After at least an hour of having the phones active on the lines, power down both phones and swap SIM cards between the 5s and 6 so that the phones are on the appropriate lines.

If this doesn't work, then you will probably need to return the iPhone 6 and start over.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yeah you cannot use the SIM card from the iPhone 4. You need a 4G sim card. I had a similar situation except I ordered a Moto X from swappa and switched as follows: iPhone 4s to Moto X to iPhone 6. Moto X uses a 4G sim card.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Also i was told that verizon cannot send you a nano sim card. You have to go to a verizon store and get it from there. because the 4G SIMS have NFC, the only way to now get one that functions is from the verizon store.

I just went ahead and returned the phone to Best Buy earlier today. I'll try your plan when I get my refund and everything goes back to normal.

Sounds good. The best buy method only works if you already have a 4G LTE phone on it. That's why you ran into trouble since the iPhone 4 is 3G.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi, I would appreciate any help someone can give me on trying to keep my verizon UDP and upgrade to a new smart phone. Here is the situation:

Line 1: iPhone 4S, UDP, upgrade available
Line 2: iPhone 5S, TDP, no upgrade available
Line 3: Basic Phone, No Data, upgrade available

Looking to upgrade my iPhone 4S on Line 1 to a Samsung S5 and keep UDP. My plan is to transfer upgrade from Line 1 (UDP) to Line 2 (TDP) and activate on Line 2 when it comes in the mail and then switch it to Line 1. I've read comments about needing to transfer SIM cards etc. which is getting me concerned that I won't be able to go from a 3G phone to an LTE phone. Can I make this work? Should I use the Basic phone (Line 3) upgrade instead? Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Just stick to your original plan as you do not need to switch around SIM cards. All you need to do is:

1.) Log into Verizon and transfer your upgrade to Line 2.
2.) Order the S5 for line 2
3.) Just follow the normal activation instructions for the S5 so that it becomes active on line 2
4.) Test the S5 to make sure it is working properly (calls, text, data). Make sure you keep the S5 on line 2 for at least an hour.

When you are ready to switch phones, do the following:

5.) Shut down the phones on lines 1 and 2
6.) Log into Verizon and reactivate the iPhone onto Line 2
7.) Activate the S5 on Line 1

This is pretty straight forward and you should have little to no problems. If you do, just ask in this forum and someone will help.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks dusoccer10! I think I will pull the trigger soon. I'm worried they will close this "loophole" some day. Will report back what happens.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have Droid Inc2 (old SIM) is there a path to keep my UDP?

My situation:

Line 1: Dinc 2, upgrade available, UDP
Line2: RazrM, upgrade available, TDP
Line 3: Basic phone, no upgrade available, no data

Variations in situation, changing Verizon policies and a very long thread thwarted my search attempts, so thanks in advance.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It seems like Dusoccer10's method outlined above might work but I wonder about the transition to 4G.

Is it just line 1 that wants to update or does line 2 want to update too? What phone do you want for each line? It's definitely possible, though, the steps will vary based on a what your end goal is.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The goal is just to upgrade my Dinc2 to a 4G phone on line 1 while keeping the UDP. I'm actually waiting for the HTC M9, so this may be premature given the changing scene at Verizon.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I am finally going to do it, and about to upgrade both of my lines from iPhone 5's to Samsung Galaxy S 5's. Both are eligible for upgrades.

Before I submit my order, I have a quick question. Each phone wants a different color. Would there be any benefit to purchasing Line 1's phone under line 2, and line 2's under line 1's? Any added protection in doing that?

Thank you!!

The steps I listed above would work minus the transferring of upgrades since Line 2 already has an upgrade. So, just do the following:

1.) Order the M9 for line 2
2.) Just follow the normal activation instructions for the M9 so that it becomes active on line 2
3.) Test the M9 to make sure it is working properly (calls, text, data). Make sure you keep the M9 on line 2 for at least an hour.

When you are ready to switch phones, do the following:

4.) Shut down the phones on lines 1 and 2
5.) Log into Verizon and reactivate the Razr M onto Line 2
6.) Activate the M9 on Line 1

That should get the new M9 on your unlimited line. If you have problems, just check back with this thread.

You will need to do that since the Galaxy S5 uses a Micro-SIM and the iPhone 5 uses a nano unless you have a SIM adapter. If you have a SIM adapter, then you can order however you want (matching or switching). However, if you do not have a SIM adapter, then your method would change greatly.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was planning on buying 2 nano to micro adapters on Amazon; I thought I had to since I am ordering from Best Buy and not VZW.
Here's my scenario again...

Line 1: UDP - iPhone 5 - month-to-month (no contract) - eligible for upgrade
Line 2: UDP - iPhone 5 - month-to-month (no contract) - eligible for upgrade

I want to order 2 Samsung Galaxy 5's from Best Buy, different colors. Order line 1's phone on line 2's, and vice versa? Or line 1's with line 1's and line 2's with line 2's?

Is there a better method for me?

Thanks so much. I really look forward to finally updating my phones; I just want to make sure I do it right. =)

If you have the adapters, then it doesn't matter how you order the phones. You could order either way and it will successfully work.

If you don't order the adapters, then you'll want to cross order. Use Line 1's upgrade for line 2 and vice versa. When the phones come in, you can log into Verizon and activate the phones on their appropriate lines using the IMEI and SIM numbers.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I currently have two lines with verizon:

iPhone 4- 2GB plan, upgrade available
iPhone 5- unlimited plan, upgrade available.

What would be the BEST way to ensure I keep my unlimited data plan while upgrading to the iPhone 6? Could I just upgrade the 4(that has the 2gb plan) to the 6 and just switch the SIM cards with the 5 that has the unlimited data?

Thanks so much for your time!
