[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

first time poster here but have been reading this thread for the past 3 days to catch up on obvious essential UDP upgrading info.
My situation is as follows:

Line1: droid maxx UDP ( no upgrade available)
Line2: samsung S3 tiered (no upgrade available)
Line3: dumb phone (Upgrade available)

Ultimately want to upgrade line 1 to LG G3. I went ahead and purchased LG G3 on amazon with the dummy line upgrade, minutes ago, and will be waiting for it to arrive in the mail. ETD may 20th wednesday. Once it arrives I will not power on phone whatsoever. I will simply take SIM from droid maxx and insert into new LG G3, turn on and let the magic happen. I will also update the thread based on my experience. Thank you to all of those that contribute to this thread, you all have been amazing. Especially duSoccer10. thank you. Surely this has been repeated over and over in this thread but every scenario is slightly different. If there is any other valuable insight anyone has to offer i'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading

Edit: I dont have any questions specifically but just want to confirm 1000% that i'm still ok to follow the method i posted.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here's a big question that a few iphone 4 (or non-sim) users probably have, which may end a lot of repeating posts if answered:

After transferring the upgrade from the UDP (non-sim) line to the TDP (sim) line, ordering and activating the new phone for 1 hour...

THEN

-is it a straight switch with the new phone, back to the UDP line - and we're done?

OR - while the new phone is activated on TDP, do we power off the both phones and swap sims (between the new phone and the original TDP phone)? AND then activate the new phone onto UDP using the pre-existing sim that we just put in the new phone?

I've seen mixed answers... but appreciate the help!

I tried to activate GS6 with new Nano SIM on udp line (formerly gs4) Unsuccessfully on VERIZON online. It said I have an incompatible data plan and was forcing a sdp

I'm going to VAR activate...

In scenarios like yours, either cutting your SIM or taking it to a VAR are your only options.

For the most part it's the second option:

1) power off both phones
2) reactivate the old phone on the tiered line via Verizon online
3) activate the new phone on the unlimited line with

As far as SIM cards are concerned, it depends on the original phones on both lines along with what type is used in the new one. If they are the same size, then you just swap. If they are different, then you reprogram using Verizon's online system.

Your process is correct, though, I typically don't recommend using Amazon very often. You need to be careful because Amazon has an extra ETF that sometimes can be triggered using this method.

thanks for the heads up, i appreciate it, is there any specific method as to how that ETF may be triggered? And when you say extra ETF do you mean AMAZON has their own ETF aside from verizon?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hoping someone could help me out.

I had the following scenario:

Line 1: iPhone 4 with ULD - Had an upgrade available
Line 2: basic phone, non smart phone, no data - no upgrade available

The first thing I did was transferred the upgrade from line 1 to line 2. On line 2 I used the upgrade for an iphone 6, and this was all done and purchased off of the verizon website. Once the phone was received, I followed what other people have done and went to the activate a new device. I chose line 1 and entered the device number and SIM number (the SIM that was provided with the phone since my iPhone 4 was 3g and didn't have a SIM). I was getting an error when trying to use that SIM, so I talked to a verizon rep online and had a SIM created for my line 1.

When I got that SIM in the mail, I went back and tried to activate that device again on line 1. When I entered in the new SIM information, it was prompting me to select a new data plan. Has anyone else gotten this before? And what did you do to keep your ULD? I hope someone can help me out. I would love to start using my new phone, but not sure what to do at this point.

So I went ahead and cancelled the Amazon order just in time thanks to you dusoccer10, thanks a bunch. After doing some research I realized that Amazon does, in fact, have a very specific policy which states that if you purchase a phone at subsidized price on the dummy line, you must keep that line with voice + data for a minimum of 181 days:

This can be found on their website, unfortunately I cannot post links yet but here it is:

When you purchase your device with service from Amazon.com, we automatically pass along an instant discount based on a commission paid to Amazon by your wireless service carrier. The commission depends upon your continued service, and if you do not maintain your service for 181 days from the service activation date, Amazon must return the commission to the carrier. Thus, this discount has been provided to you in good faith based on your agreement to (a) activate a new or extend an existing line of service for the device(s) with the carrier for two years, (b) maintain this line of service in good standing, and (c) not alter the line of service type other than adding an additional line of service to an individual account for at least 181 consecutive days.

To sum it up, if you have a dummy line with an upgrade available and wish to use that line to eventually switch and use on your UDP line, you cannot purchase it through Amazon because the 9.99 a month will turn into $30.00 a month and you must keep that for a minimum of 181 days or pay an Amazon ETF.

I am going to go ahead and purchase through Best Buy as that seems to be the popular choice. There doesnt seem to be an issue like Amazon's through the Best Buy method, from what I'm understanding, thanks again dusoccer10.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi everyone -
I have been reading your post and have a few questions based on what a verizon rep has told me.

My scenario:
L1: UDP, iPhone 5, upgrade available
L2: No data, dumb phone, upgrade available

My ultimage goal is to upgrade L1 to an iPhone 6, keep UDP and not have a data plan on L2. My plan was to:
1. Upgrade (through verizon) L2 to a 2GB TDP with an iPhone 6
2. Activate iPhone 6 on L2
3. Deactivate iPhone 6 on L2
4. Reactivate dumb phone on L2 and get rid of the TDP
5. Activate iPhone 6 on L1

The verizon rep told me that there is no way to use L2 to upgrade to an iPhone 6 without having to pay the data fee for the 2 year contract, whether I had the dumb phone activated or the iPhone activated on this line. She said this has recently changed - you used to be able to get rid of the data plan for L2, but there is a new rule that does not allow you to do this without paying the $375 cancelation fee.
1. Based on your experience, is what the verizon rep told me correct?
2. Would it be best to activate the iPhone 6 on L2 first, then activate on L1, or would this cause me to pay the data plan on L2? Can you share how I should activate (simply switch sim cards, etc)?
3. Is this a situation where I would need to go through best buy?
4. If I did go through verizon to do the upgrade, does it make a difference whether any of this is done online or in store?

Thanks so much for any advice and experience you can share!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Do you have an active nano-SIM that is programmed to unlimited? If so, you can definitely go that route.
i don't think it's programmed. I just ordered the nano sim straight from VRZ intended for a iPhone 5s that didn't work out. could someone explain to me how that works thank you

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm not sure about the activation fee, but by far the safest way is to transfer your upgrades to either of you two tiered lines. For instance, to upgrade L2 to a G3, you would do the following:

1.) Log on to Best Buy (or Verizon)
2.) Transfer upgrade from Line 2 to Line 5
3.) Upgrade Line 5 to the G3 and have it shipped home
4.) When the G3 arrives, activate it on Line 5 for an hour (make sure call, text, data all work)
5.) Power off the G3, log onto Verizon, and reactivate the Note 2
6.) Finally, activate the G3 on Line 2

All you need to do is repeat this process for Line 1 and you'll keep unlimited on both lines.

Does this still work? This post was from March and I have not been around this forum in a few months.

If so, I am in basically the same situation.

I have an upgrade available on the UDP line that I want to use. I will just transfer the upgrade to the non-UDP line, get the upgrade, activate the phone, and then after an hour making sure it works, reactivate it on the UDP line by either transferring the SIM card or doing it online?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Awesome! Yeah, that line will never be changed. And thank you for the quick reply!

Hi eolsgaard - I was reading your scenario and mine seems similar. I spoke with a verizon rep who told me that there is no way to use a basic line to upgrade to an iPhone 6 without having to pay the data fee for the 2 year contract, whether I had the basic phone activated or the iPhone activated on this line. She said this has recently changed - you used to be able to get rid of the data plan, but there is a new rule that does not allow you to do this without paying the $375 cancellation fee.

Were you able to upgrade using a basic line, keep your UDP, and not have to pay the data plan for your basic plan? Does activating the new phone on the UDP and switching sim cards take care of this?

The Verizon rep is sorta correct as your steps would lead to paying data on the basic line. Verizon got rid of this loophole last August.

What you need to do is the following:

1) order the iPhone 6 on the basic line from either Best Buy or Verizon. Have it shipped to home.
2) when it arrives do not turn it on or charge it.
3) remove the SIM that came with the 6.
4) take the SIM from your 5 and put it in the 6.

Finally, turn on the 6 and wait a few minutes for it to activate. Then enjoy the new phone.

Take the phone to a VAR for activation and don't bring any SIMs with you. Just say you got the phone as a gift and want to activate it on the unlimited line.

It definitely still works and is the best method for upgrading. Using a tiered line is the way to go.

I'm sorry for not responding earlier, but I'm currently traveling. Remind me of your situation. If you are going the IMEI and SIM route, you can use either SIM as they are both reprogrammable.

Awesome! Thank you for your response, dusoccer10!

So I will simply switch sim cards, I do not need to do the activation step online for L1?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just saw that the Note 3 for Verizon is being offered for 20 freaking dollars through Amazon. I gather it'd work like ordering from Best Buy, IE when the phone comes, swap in my current phone, in this case Note 2's SIM and then power up the Note 3?
