[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm sorry for not responding earlier, but I'm currently traveling. Remind me of your situation. If you are going the IMEI and SIM route, you can use either SIM as they are both reprogrammable.

Thanks for responding. I have an unlimited vrz plan iPhone 4 and i unused verizon nano sim still in package. I'd like to buy the iPhone 6 on my upgrade. is it safe to use that card or will it need to be programmed first

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have 2 lines. Line 1 has UDP eligible for upgrade. Line 2 has TDP eligible for upgrade. I was wondering if I would run into an issue if I ordered the new phone, of course using line 2's upgrade online, and then after work picking up a nano sim card from a vzw store to activate the nano with the UDP to pop it into the new phone when it arrives?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Has anyone confirmed that this method will work long term if you order directly from verizon itself? The phone model I was wanting (a 64GB Droid Turbo) is not available on BestBuy. Will it still work if I have it shipped to my home and destroy the SIM that comes with it? We have two UDP lines and one basic line and the account holder isn't willing to use that upgrade to extend the contract on it, or pay extra for a data plan on a line that just sits in a drawer. Also we really can't afford to lose our data because we use a lot of gigs in a month. :D

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Forgot to add only the UDP lines have upgrades available.

Ideally, you would program the unused SIM to your unlimited line. This way you can just put it in the new phone once it arrives.

You don't need a new SIM as SIMs can be reprogrammed. Feel free to upgrade line 2. Once it has been activated for an hour, then reactivate the old phone on line 2 and move the new one to the unlimited line. You will not need any new SIMs with this process.

How are you defining long-term? There is nothing stopping Verizon from canceling unlimited data plans tomorrow regardless if you are in contract.

Thanks for the reply! The only reason that I mentioned about the sim card was because I have a micro sim in my g3, and was looking at getting the Nexus 6 which takes a nano sim. Now I saw something about cutting the micro down to a nano but I don't want to mess up the sim card if I do it wrong lol

I meant long term as in they don't bump you to a tiered plan as soon as you have the new phone active, or a few days or weeks after.

What phone do you currently have? The Best Buy method doesn't work very well through Verizon.

The better way to upgrade is to use Line 2's upgrade to order the Turbo. When it arrives, just use the SIM from line 1 to activate it directly onto the unlimited line.

I currently have an iPhone 5C. I know that the 5C and Turbo have nano SIM cards, so I wouldn't have to cut it or use an adapter, it's just the compatibility between the different OS platforms I'm worried about.

For keeping unlimited, going from Apple to Android (or vice versa) doesn't matter. Since you are only dealing with nano SIMs, your two options are:

Use Line 2
1) order the Turbo using the upgrade on line 2 from either Verizon or best buy
2) when the phone arrives, do not turn it on
3) remove the SIM from the Turbo and put the SIM from the iPhone in the new smartphone

Use Line 1
1) use the upgrade from line 1 through Best Buy
2) follow steps 2 and 3 from above

Either way works and will allow you to upgrade.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Your method is very easy. Just do the following:

1.) Transfer your upgrade from Line 2 to Line 3 (you cannot use the basic line's upgrade in this method) at either Best Buy or Verizon's website; order the Turbo and have it shipped to home
2.) When the Turbo arrives, follow the activation instructions that come with the phone so that you activate it on Line 3 (the tiered line)
3.) Wait at least an hour and make sure that everything works
4.) Power off the Turbo and the iPhone 4
5.) Take the SIM out of the Turbo and put it into the iPhone 5c. This will reactivate the 5c on the tiered line
6.) Log into Verizon's website and click "activate or switch device"
7.) Choose Line 2
8.) Select activate a phone that has been on the account before. Choose the Turbo
9.) Select use pre-existing SIM
10.) Use the old SIM that was in the 5c and type both the IMEI and SIM numbers in the appropriate boxes
11.) Follow the rest of the directions for activation

Whenever you want to upgrade the other unlimited line, feel free to follow these steps again.

Does it matter if Line 2 (UDP with upgrade) is out of contract? On a related note, I have heard from some that by transferring Line 2's upgrade to Line 3 (TDP with no available upgrade) that this will extend the contract of Line 2 and change force that line into a different data plan. Maybe that is because people have tried this process in a Verizon store, and not transferring the upgrade and buying the phone all online.

Also, I really would like to hear from some of these people who have been given advice on whether these approaches to keeping unlimited have worked.

Just a couple of questions. Am I activating the new phone online or do I have to speak to a rep? Secondly I failed to mention that I wasn't putting the old phone back on the TDP line, I was gonna put the phone (g3) from the UDP on that line. Would I run into any problems doing that?

Line 2 would have to be out of contract for you to have an upgrade available. When you transfer the upgrade to Line 3 and follow the upgrade steps, you will be extending the contract on Line 2. This happens because that is where the upgrade originated from. Line 3 will become upgrade eligible whenever its contract expires.

People should never, ever go into a Verizon corporate store unless it is to upgrade a tiered line with its own upgrade. Verizon reps will say this about changing a contract and not being able to keep unlimited. This thread is living proof that it does work and is possible.

As for other people's thoughts on this method, I'll leave that up to them to respond. If you flip through the last 20 or so pages, you'll find this same method given to multiple people. Transferring an upgrade to a tiered line is by far the best way to go. If you want another source of proof, go to this SlickDeals thread (Verizon - How to Use a Subsidized Upgrade and Keep Your Unlimited Data Plan Or Avoid A 2 year Data Plan on a Basic Line - Slickdeals.net) and read up on the "4ever Method".

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here's the situation.

Current plan: Any mobile Talk and text share 700

Line 1: iPhone 4s UDP (upgrade available)

Line 2: iPhone 5s TDP (no upgrade)

Line 3: iPhone 5s TDP (no upgrade)

Line 4: Basic phone, no data (upgrade available)

The goal is to upgrade line 1 to the iPhone 6 while keeping UDP and basic phone with no data.

I was just re-reading your initial request and it mentioned both lines being eligible for upgrades. In this case, do the following:

1.) Upgrade the tiered line to a Nexus 6. This can be done in-store or shipped to home. If you do the upgrade in-store, just have the Verizon reps activate the phone directly onto the tiered line. If you decide to activate the phone from home, just follow the directions that come with the phone.
2.) Once the Nexus 6 has been activated for an hour or two, then log into Verizon online and select "activate or switch device"
3.) Choose either line as it does not matter
4.) Select "swap devices" and follow the directions. You should be able to swap the devices across the lines. If the system won't let you, feel free to call Verizon and they can do it over the phone.

You will have no problems in moving the G3 to the tiered line. It doesn't really affect anything.

Finally, and this is for everyone in the thread, the only reason you can go into Verizon to upgrade is because you are using the tiered line's upgrade! If you were trying to transfer the unlimited's upgrade, then you would do it online.

No problem. Just do the following:

1.) Transfer your upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 (or Line 3) at either Best Buy or Verizon's website; order the iPhone 6 and have it shipped to home
2.) When the 6 arrives, follow the activation instructions that come with the phone so that you activate it on the tiered line
3.) Wait at least an hour and make sure that everything works
4.) Power off both the 4s and the 6
5.) Take the SIM out of the 6 and put it into the iPhone 5s. This will reactivate the 5s on the tiered line
6.) Log into Verizon's website and click "activate or switch device"
7.) Choose Line 1
8.) Select activate a phone that has been on the account before. Choose the iPhone 6
9.) Select use pre-existing SIM
10.) Use the old SIM that was in the 5s and type both the IMEI and SIM numbers in the appropriate boxes
11.) Follow the rest of the directions for activation

Enjoy your new iPhone!
