[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think I need some help. bit of a complex situation.

Anyways, I had a iphone 4s with UDP and nationwide talk and text 450. I've been on month to month for years, and have an upgrade available. My goal was to split this into essentially voice and text with a different carrier (page plus) and stay with Verizon for unlimited data. I've done the first step by getting an LTE sim on a throwaway android phone at a VAR. my UDP stayed.

Now I want to do the best buy trick. now the hard part. I want to downgrade the data to the cheapest available. I heard that the 30minute voice only loyalty plans are $15 plus the $30 for udp.
The downside is they put you on contract for a year. I'm ok with this though.

The big question is when to do the minute downgrade, before or after the best buy trick. For the before scenario, I'm afraid that once im put on a one year contract I won't be able to do the best buy trick, because my upgrade eligibility might be nullified by being on contract.

The other scenario is to do the minute downgrade after the best buy trick. Obviously I would have to wait for the activation to fall off. Contacting Verizon after the best buy trick might be risky because I have a 2 year contract with a udp active. They'd have to know something fishy was up, and my get just take my udp.

I can't find the answer to this before/after dilemma anywhere. I've looked quite a bit. Any ideas?
I have been under contract on 2 unlimited data lines my entire time with Verizon. I Ave never had a problem or have a rep threaten to take away my unlimited data. I have called many times to get a warranty replacement for a phone I used a loophole to get.

That said I am unsure if the $15 loyalty plan has a subsidized upgrade with. I suspect it does not. If it does not you need to use your upgrade first. If it does you can probably do it after but probably will have to wait a month or two for the pending activation to drop off.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello! I've been following this thread for about 2 weeks and ready to try this. My situation:

Line 1 GNote3 / UDP - no upgrade available until Jan 2016
Line 2 GS3 / UDP - upgrade available
Line 3 Dumb Phone - upgrade available
Line 4 Dumb Phone - upgrade available

I want to upgrade Lines 1 and 2 to GNote4's and preserve the UDP. Line 3 and 4 are fortunately for my technology challenged parents who want nothing to do with smartphones. I also have access to a Costco membership if that method is advised.

Can you please confirm how I can upgrade on Lines 1 and 2 and keep UDP on both?
Also, assuming it is possible, is there any risk (or benefit) to upgrading both at the same time? Thinking of doing one at a time in case it fails so I don't lose it on both. Appreciate the advice.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok one last time before I do it. Here's current set up:

Line 1: iPhone 5s - 2gb Data plan (upgrade available)
Line 2: iPhone 5s - Unlimited data (upgrade available)
Line 3: Basic phone, dummy line (upgrade available)

I want to upgrade both Line 1 and Line 2 to the iPhone 6. Is this the best way to do it:

Upgrade Line 1 through Best Buy online. When phone arrives, insert Line 2's old (UDP) sim card in phone.
Next day, transfer upgrade from Line 3 to Line 1, order phone through Best Buy online and insert Line 1's old sim.

Do the Best Buy method first before switching plans. However, you will need to wait until the pending activation falls off your account before switch the plan to the 30 minute legacy one. If you contact Verizon with the pending activation on your account, there is always a chance of the rep forcing the activation which would cause the plan change.

Also, when they switch you to the legacy plan, you will not have to agree to a 1-year extension since you are under a new 2-year contract. The 1 year extension is only for people who are under a year remaining before an upgrade.

The good news is that it is quite easy to do this. Starting with Line 1:

1.) Order a Note 4 from either Best Buy or Verizon and have it shipped to home using an upgrade on Line 3.
2.) When the Note 4 arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Remove the SIM card that comes with the Note 4
4.) Take the SIM from the Note 3 and put it in the Note 4.
5.) Turn on Note 4 and wait a few minutes for it to activate on Line 1.

Now repeat all steps but use Line 4's upgrade to order a Note 4 for Line 2. Because the GS 3, Note 3, and Note 4 all use the same SIM size, it's just the old SIM swap that will activate the new phones.

Also, definitely do them as two separate orders.

No. You cannot transfer a basic phone upgrade to a smartphone line. Verizon got rid of that last November. All you need to do is:

1.) Upgrade Line 1 to an iPhone 6. Feel free to do this in-store as this is a tiered line upgrade and will not affect your unlimited data line.

Once you have upgraded the tiered line, do the following:

2.) Transfer your upgrade from Line 2 to Line 1 at either Best Buy or Verizon online. Order the iPhone 6 and have it shipped to home.
3.) When new phone arrives, power off all active smartphones (i.e. the 5s on the unlimited line and 6 on the tiered line)
4.) Put the SIM from Line 1 into the new smartphone that was shipped
5.) Put the SIM from the 5s into the iPhone 6 that was active on the tiered line

Finally, turn on both 6s and enjoy!

By following these steps, you will avoid any pending activations on your account.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

LG Lucid 2 and Razr M. Looking to get two Droid Maxx.

No problem. Just do the following twice by switching lines as appropriate:

1.) Order the Droid Maxx using Line 1's upgrade from either Best Buy or Verizon. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the new phone arrives do not turn it on or plug it in.
3.) Log into Verizon's website
4.) Select "activate or switch device"
5.) Select Line 2
6.) Select "phone that has never been on the account before"
7.) Select "use pre-existing SIM"
8.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers that came with the new phone. Usually, there is a sticker on the box that contains them.
9.) Follow the rest of the directions to activate the phone

Now repeat using Line 2's upgrade in step 1 and selecting Line 1 in step 5. This will get you two new Droid Maxx's on both unlimited lines and extend them into a new 2 year contract. Just make sure to do two separate orders and do not confuse the phones!!!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

no one responded to this post (#9283). Does that mean it's not possible for me to get S6 at upgrade price and still keep unlimited?

thank you.

I want to upgrade my UDP line and get either Note 4 or S6 but my current phone (droid Incredible-original) does not have a Sim card to swap. Is there any way for me to do that?

I don't know if it matters, but I have a 2 lines
Line 1- HTC incredible-original UDP upgrade available
Line 2- droid X UDP upgrade available

thanks.

I was in a similar spot as you:
Non-SIM device and needing to upgrade and keep my UDP.

I borrowed my brother's old unused VZW phone. Went to a VZW store told them I wanted to swap from my old phone to my brother's orphaned device. They activated a micro SIM and I used that device for a week or so.

I then did the Best Buy method for an online upgrade to the new phone I wanted and had it shipped to my home.

Simply make sure when the new phone shows up to immediately put in the "old" SIM into the new device before ever powering on the new device. Don't use the new SIM under any circumstance.

Power up. Make a phone call to any friend's number. If the call goes through you are done.

Hope that helps

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK, sorry but reading through threads I understand the concept but not quit sure how to upgrade via 'dumb' line if at all possible so I'd like to throw it out there for someone to clarify if you wouldn't mind..thanks in advance..

Here's what I have:
1) UDP w/ upgrade avail (Note2)
2)UDP w/o upgrade (S4)
3) dumb line w/ upgrade avail (Haven)

Thank you..

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Forgot to add, would like to upgrade Line 1 to Note4 and possiblly Line 2 if at all possible.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You can upgrade line 3 to the Note 4. When you get the Phone do not turn it on. Immediately remove the sim. Place the sim from the unlimited line into the phone. By not activating the phone on that line it bypasses the data requirement.

You can then just use the best buy method for the other phone. This is basically the same thing. Just order it from best buy. I personally would just activate the upgrade on the unlimited line to Line 2. I would activate the upgrade from Line 3 onto line 1.

The sim sizes should be the same.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

wanna run through the situation before doing anything that would jeopardize my UDP.
line 1: s4 with 2gb data
line 2: bb z10 with Unlimited data

go to verizon and use line 1 upgrade to get s6 on line 1.
go home and wait till next day and then reactivate s4 on line 1 then activate s6 on line 2.

this is what verizon store clerk told me to do. Want to confirm that this will work. also want to know that if this would work would it work even if i didnt wait until the next day?
TIA

It will work. If you are using line's 1 upgrade your unlimited data is not in danger. You can put that phone immediately on your unlimited line. The only problem this would create is you would have a pending activation on line 1 for a couple months.

I would leave the phone activated for an hour or two and then swap it.

What's the fear with pending activation? Is that why you advised to not aviator the second iPhone 6 on line 1 first? My impression was that it had to be done or else Verizon sees it as an upgraded phone that was never activated properly and your get charged.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

yes it helps . And a million thanks. I do have an old phone that I can use to do that.

Remember the prices at Best Buy website change every few days. I check on Fridays and Sundays. The device you order needs to be available for home delivery before you can proceed. In store pickup is not an option.

Once you complete the order process you don't want to speak to anyone from BestBuy or VZW until you have completed the process. If you happen to be one of the few who are told there is a problem with your order you must cancel the order. It rarely happens. But when it does you must cancel the order to keep the UDP.

Good luck. Hope you get a really great phone. My Note3 with the FoxFi app has really been a great combo for a year now.

Nexus 6 is just so much easier to root and tether with. No need for a 3rd party app. :)

Thats easy enough. Thank you much. Just to be sure, I can order both phones at the same time, right, just make sure they are done as two separate orders or should I order one, wait til it arrives and do the switch, THEN order the next one?
