[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So does the best buy notice saying "There's a change from Verizon Wireless for unlimited data plans. Verizon Wireless has ended this plan option, so when you upgrade you'll be switched to their most common 2GB plan by default." when I try and do the upgrade. Do I just ignore this when trying the best buy loophole to keep unlimited data?

That had been the normal disclaimer for years.

Nexus 6 is just so much easier to root and tether with. No need for a 3rd party app. :)

Glad rooting your Nexus 6 works for you. Not sure that I agree with you that rooting is easier than simply installing an app. I like that I can easily receive/ install OS updates which I understand becomes a problem with root.

But to each his own

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Good to know, thanks. Makes me nervous trying to do the best buy upgrade route and accidentally losing unlimited data.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thats easy enough. Thank you much. Just to be sure, I can order both phones at the same time, right, just make sure they are done as two separate orders or should I order one, wait til it arrives and do the switch, THEN order the next one?

You can do both orders back to back at the same time. Just make sure to keep the phones straight when they arrive. If you activate the wrong phone on the wrong line, you'll lose unlimited. That's the only problem with the method when using the exact same phone. As long as you keep them straight, you'll have no problems.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

What's the fear with pending activation? Is that why you advised to not aviator the second iPhone 6 on line 1 first? My impression was that it had to be done or else Verizon sees it as an upgraded phone that was never activated properly and your get charged.

You don't have to fear getting charged for the phone. If Verizon catches you with a pending activation, they will push the plan change causing you to lose unlimited data rather than make you pay full price for the phone. This is why I always give the advice first to do things that avoid pending activations.

Further, it prevents someone from sitting in limbo waiting for it to fall off their account. A person can go to Verizon for help with the phone if something is acting up. That's not the case with a pending activation.

Pending activations, by themselves, are basically harmless to people who know what they are doing. I don't make that assumption when responding to people on this forum. If I can make things as easy as possible, even if it causes a few extra steps, that is how I'm going to advise.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

It will work. If you are using line's 1 upgrade your unlimited data is not in danger. You can put that phone immediately on your unlimited line. The only problem this would create is you would have a pending activation on line 1 for a couple months.

I would leave the phone activated for an hour or two and then swap it.

If I did the above, but transferred an upgrade, how could i avoid having a pending activation for a couple months? If I activate the phone on line 1 for some short time and/or confirm activation by attempting to add features or try to upgrade again (or transfer an upgrade), would that take care of the pending activation issue?

Your upgrade is on the tiered line? What line do you want to transfer the upgrade to? If you are afraid of a pending activation just upgrade the tiered line. Activate it on that line for a couple hours then swap the phones around.

The upgrade is on both, but I am using the upgrade on the tiered line, and will use it on the ubilimited line.
Down the road if the tiered line a
Wants to upgrade, I can transfer the upgrade from the udp to the tiered line and everything would stay the same?

Yes. I would upgrade your tiered line and activate the phone on that line. When you need another upgrade transfer the unlimited upgrade and tiered line.

Thanks!
I have a second UDP line. When I want to upgrade that one, I can transfer the upgrade to the TDP and go through the activation, wait, reactivate TDP phone on the tiered line and activate new one on UDP line (basically same as I am doing now, just transferring upgrade).

You got it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello! What is the best way to upgrade both phones and keep UDP?

Line 1. S4 UDP - Upgrade Available
Line 2. S4 TDP - Upgrade Available 2GB

I was trying to find a similar case as mine, but there are so many pages.
Any help would be great! Thanks!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

dusoccer10,
Been reading about 20 pages of this thread tonight. I think I have the basics on what you are referring. However, I experienced something different today and want to verify this before trying out the method here.

My situation is:
Line 1 -UDP S4-upgrade available MTM
Line 2- TDP G2- no upgrade available until contract ends 6/26/15
Line 3- Dumb phone- upgrade available MTM since 2013

I went into Verizon corporate store with the plan to upgrade Line 3 to a 2gb smartphone line for my daughter. Plan was to get the S6 on this line and then transfer it to Line 1 UDP and transfer my S4 to my daughter on Line 3. The Verizon rep told me that if I transfered the S6 to my UDP line, I would immediately lose my UDP and be switched to a 2GB TDP. He said that since I was activating a HD voice capable phone on an UDP line, this is what automatically happens. Told me they only have 5 smartphones I could use to save my UDP (and those were mid level devices that were lower than my S4). I said what if I just bought the S6 outright full price and wanted to add to my line....he said that would end my UDP also. So I said to him as you update and move all your smartphones to HD calling, then basically you are forcing everyone off of UDP lines and he said YES. Have you heard of this before, or is he telling me bull????
I was pissed and I just left the store.

After reading this thread, am I understanding it right that I would do the following:
1. Order the S6 by upgrading Line 3 to a 2gb smartphone plan.
2. Activate the S6 on Line 3 when arrives and wait an hour or so.
3. Here is the part I have issues with....the S4 I own has a micro SIM and the S6 comes with a nano sim. I am keeping both phones and need both cards. How can I make this work as I can't physically swap cards or cut one down as I need both? I don't want to go back to the store for a card after what I mentioned above and risk them taking away my UDP.

Thanks in advance for any help!!
Kevin

As you figured out you will not lose unlimited data by activating an HD calling phone.

Your plan will work. You can swap the phones online using Verizon's website.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Thanks for confirming. So how do I handle this part?

Nexus makes it easy. It was easier before the new os, but it works. I don't have to install certificates and change my lock screen to use tethering.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Last spring I used the Best Buy method to get an S5, which I gave to my wife. We both still have unlimited data, so it worked.

Currently still have two UDP lines:

UDP 1 (currently an LGG2 that i use)upgrade available in 2016

UDP 2 (my wife's S5) upgrade available since 2014

I want to use line 2s upgrade to get an LG G4 but keep UDP.

Thanks

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Awesome! I appreciate all the quick replies.
Is the advantage of the best buy method that you don't need a second line?

Correct. The Best Buy method is best suited for people who have a single line plan as that is their only real option (besides full priced or used).
