[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I have one question: Which SIM card do I use when activating the phone on my mom's line? The SIM card from her phone?

Just follow the directions that come with the phone. You'll either use the new one or your mom's depending on if the SIM size matches. SIMs can be reprogrammed so don't worry if the sizes don't match. Just follow the directions and you'll get whatever new phone you want onto the unlimited line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here is all you need to do:

1.) Power off the iPhone 6.
2.) Take the SIM out of the iPhone 6 and put it back in the 5c.

Now the tiered line is back to normal and all the is left is to get the iPhone 6 on the unlimited line. Take the iPhone 6 (without a SIM) to a VAR and ask them to put it on your unlimited line in place of the iPhone 4.

Instructions from dusoccer10 and Mr.Toad work perfectly. Thank you both for the great help. We now have 2 UDP iPhone6 and 2 TDP iPhone5c.

It's fairly easy though it will take a little bit of time:

1.) Transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 3 and order the phone you want from Best Buy or Verizon online. Have the phone shipped to home.
2.) When the new phone arrives, follow the activation directions so that you activate the phone on Line 3.
3.) Wait an hour and make sure the phone works.
4.) Power off the new smartphone
5.) Log into Verizon online and reactivate the Lucid 3 on the Line 3.
6.) Activate the new smartphone on Line 1.

Once this is done, you'll have the new smartphone on Line 1. Just repeat the process with Line 2 and 3 to get a new smartphone on Line 2.

It's easy:

1.) Use the upgrade on either Line 1 or 3. Order the iPhone 6 from Verizon and have it shipped to home
2.) When it arrives, do not turn it on or try to charge it
3.) Take the SIM from your iPhone 5 and put it in the iPhone 6
4.) Turn on the iPhone 6 and give it a couple of minutes to activate on your account

Enjoy your new phone!

Thanks for the information. I have another scenario for my sister who is on an stand alone individual plan. Are there any tricks for single lines? Can i take the upgrade from L1 or L3 on my family plan and activate it under the single account the same way?

L1 - iPhone 4, UDP, Upgrade Available

Correct. All you need to do is use the other basic line upgrade and order a new phone. When the new phone arrives remove the SIM that comes with it. Give the new phone to your sister and have her take it to a VAR for activation on her single line plan.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Setup

Line 1 - Iphone 5 UDP (upgrade eligible)
Line 2 - Iphone 5c UDP (not upgrade eligible)
Line 3 - No phone. dump line (not upgrade eligible)

I want to upgrade the line 1 phone to an Iphone 6. I know I can do it through best buy by just ordering the phone online and swapping the sim cards when it gets delivered to home. My question is, is there a way I can upgrade through the Verizon website? They are running a deal where you get $200 off a new phone with an eligible upgrade. Thanks for the help.

Transfer your upgrade to the basic line and order the iPhone from Verizon. When it arrives at home, just take your old SIM card and put it in the new phone before turning it on. This will activate the phone directly onto your unlimited line.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi,
I have UDP on my primary line, but the 4G LTE phone is really old and it uses standard size SIM. I want to buy an used/new phone but they all require either micro SIM or nano SIM. What should I do in order not to lose my UDP? Can I trust Verizon to activate a new SIM card for me without changing my plan?

If you buy a brand new phone at full price or a used one from a third party, Verizon will activate it with no problems. It's only when someone tries to buy a new one at discount pricing is when trouble arises. That's the whole purpose of this thread.

What phone do you have, what new phone do you want, and what type of plan do you have? Depending on your answers, we can determine your options.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

thanks for the prompt reply. I don't want to do any exploits and I am willing to pay full price, but I am scared of VZW taking away my UDP.
I currently have nation wide 700 minute + $30 unlimited email and web, with 2 dumb phone lines (L1: UDP, L2/L3, dumb phones).
L1 UDP phone is LG Revolution (I know, dinosaur, but at least it runs 4G LTE), which uses standard size SIM
I am considering Galaxsy S4 or S5, both use micro SIM. It looks like I have two options.
1. buy the phone, and go to VZW website and go through the Activate/Switch My Device link. Since I never use the phone before for my account, I would need to put in the IMEI/ID numbers and since the SIM card size will be different, they will ship a new SIM card to me. I guess I will then follow the instructions once I receive the SIM card.

2. Or go to a corporate store and have the rep to help me. Will they give me a SIM card without the new phone? OR I need to have the new phone on hand? will they insist activating the new SIM card and new phone on the spot? I want to minimize involving VSW rep as little as possible, so they will not "fat finger" and "unintentionally" change my plan. I heard once you lose UDP, even it is their fault, it is impossible to get it back.

Which is the better/safer option?

Or just buy the S4 or S5 used . Swappa ,Ebay,or Craigslist.

I actually wanted to renew my contract for this very reason. I don't know if my thinking is valid, but I figure that Verizon will have a harder time taking unlimited away from customers under contract than from those that are month-to-month.

Another benefit of renewing the contract was of course the subsidized phone!

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Everyone on here seems to have multiple line plans. What about those of us who have a single line account? I'm with Verizon, iphone 6, and have had an upgrade since 2013 that I haven't been able to use. :/ Will the Best Buy method to the house work? Provided I go with another iphone so the sims are the same. It makes me nervous.

You are correct on your options. If you would prefer to do it in store, your best bet is to take it to a VAR. They are far easier to work with than the corporate Verizon stores. Either way you go, it should be fine.

It's common to think that one is a little bit safer under contract; however, this is incorrect. It's in your contract that Verizon has the right to change your plan at any time. As compensation for changing the terms, Verizon must wave the ETF if you are under contract.

In that case, I'm still ahead. I got the subsidized phone, and I can still drop Verizon without paying the ETF if they take away my unlimited data.
