[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Well for Line 1 I am currently on month to month... no contract. Will I be forced onto Tiered Data for Line 1 or will it be a new 2 year contract with UDP?

Of course you are month to month; otherwise, you would not have an upgrade available on the line. By transferring the upgrade, you put a new 2 year contract with unlimited data on Line 1.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

1.) Through either Verizon or Best Buy online, transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 3. Order the S6 edge and have it shipped to home.
2.) When the S6 edge arrives, go ahead and follow the activation instructions as you'll be activating it on the tiered line (Line 3)
3.) Wait at least an hour and make sure the phone works. Test calls, texts, and data
4.) After an hour, log onto Verizon and reactivate the iPhone 6 on Line 3
5.) Now activate the S6 edge on Line 1

Thanks for the quick reply. So, out of curiousity, why does transferring an upgrade online not remove the UDP? Verizon Reps (which probably know nothing) told me that transferring an upgrade from any phone with an UDP would cause the UDP to be terminated.

Because Verizon reps know nothings. ;-) Actually, I think a lot of reps know that this works, but they are required to say otherwise. It's just another ploy to get you off unlimited.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

L1: Samsung S4, UDP, upgrade available - Want to upgrade to Note 4
L2: Basic smartphone, upgrade available
L3: Iphone 6 Plus, Tiered Plan, no upgrade available

I want to upgrade my S4 to the Note 4 which has the unlimited data plan. So would I transfer that upgrade to L3 and use L3 to purchase the the Note 4? Don't they use different sim cards?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Used best buy method to upgrade to iphone6. However unable to use iMessage/FaceTime as states "waiting for activation". Is there a solution to this issue?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

dusoccer10 -
I have a similar scenario and questions. I transferred an upgrade from L2 UDP month to month to L1 TDP (upgrade eligible 10/16/15) I refused delivery from Fedex and the iPhone 6 is on its way back to Verizon. Hopefully I will avoid a restocking fee and the upgrade will be restored to L2 and not remain on L1 so that I can attempt the 4ever method when the iPhone 6s comes out. I really don't want to call Verizon right now and would like to stay under the radar. What is the track record for upgrades reverting without customer intervention?

cheezmaker5:
I have not done anything yet. I am going to make my decision over the weekend, but will likely return my iPhone 6 next week. Hopefully the upgrade will revert back to the UDP since the phone was never activated. Luckily I have other upgrades available, but would hate to have one thrown away. I'll update when I know. Let us know what happens with yours.

You will not lose your upgrade; however, you might have to ask Verizon to restore it.

Don't worry about the SIM cards being different sizes as Verizon's system will reprogram them to fit the plan. All you need to do is:

1.) Transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 3 using Best Buy or Verizon online. Order the Note 4 and have it shipped to home
2.) When the phone arrives, follow the activation instructions and activate it on Line 3 for about an hour
3.) After an hour, log into Verizon's system and select "activate or switch device"
4.) Choose Line 3
5.) Select "phone that has been on the account before" and choose the 6+
6.) Type in the IMEI and SIM numbers of the 6+ (you should write these down before activating the Note 4)
7.) Follow the rest of the directions to activate the 6+ back on Line 3

Once this is done, all you need to do is power off the S4 and remove its SIM card. Take the SIM from the S4 and put it in the Note 4. Now, just power on the Note 4 and wait a couple of minutes for it to activate.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

When trying to upgrade my TDP device from Best Buy, I get the following message:

"You can upgrade right now using Device Payment. Or, if you'd prefer, you can use your standard 2-year upgrade on or after 12/31/2015."

I just transferred my upgrade from the UDP line though, so shouldn't I be able to upgrade for free?

EDIT: It doesn't seem like the transferred upgrade is staying with the line when going through Verizon. Do I need to actually go through the process and select the data plan, etc.?

You can't transfer the upgrade and not upgrade, it won't stay. If you transfer the upgrade on Verizon website you have to accurately use it before you leave the website. You can't transfer on Verizon site and use it on BB site.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I had read conflicting reports regarding subsidized upgrades ending this week. My wife's iPhone 5S has such lousy battery life that I wanted to get her a new phone w/o paying full retail. We went in to a VZW store late Wednesday night and I fell for the salesman's authoritative claim that subsidies were ending and that any changes to plans would kill UDP. He had us purchase a home phone device for $100 to add a line to our account. He was then able to allow us to use a smartphone upgrade transfer to keep my UDP and get my wife a new Note 4. We have a basic phone line that will be out of contract in October and he told us to go online and deactivate it then. While it cost $100 for the home phone device it is just costing me an extra $10/month to have the added phone line since I will be dropping the other line. I can use the added line at my office which is cheaper than the $30/month that Comcast charges.

Needless to say, grandfathered accounts have not lost subsidy and now Note 5 will be out shortly but based on reviews the Note 5 is not really a step up on the Note 4 so I am going to keep things as they are. I was manipulated a bit but I did get to keep mu UDP at a VZW store which I am certain is quite a rarity.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Big thanks to this community and everyone involved.
My mom and I successfully used the Best Buy method around 1.5 years ago. UDP kept.
Since I see a few conflicting stories, my question is, in 6 months will we have upgrades available? By then hopefully the Best Buy method will still work...

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

As of now we expect upgrade to survive. But things can change at any time.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I would like to upgrade the GalaxyS5 on Line 1 to a GS6+ from BB or VZ. Below is my scenario:

Family Share 700 plan
Line 1: GalaxyS5 - UDP - No upgrade avail
Line 2: GalaxyS5 - UDP - Upgrade avail
Line 3: Basic FlipPhone - No upgrade avail
Line 4: Basic FlipPhone - No upgrade avail

Very nervous to lose UDP and want to be very careful. I see a lot of posts with transferring to TDP phones but I don't have a TDP. And then there are posts with just upgrading a UDP line. So I'm confused why you would need to transfer??

Thanks in advance

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

To elaborate, what really confuses me is why when people have lines with both UDP and TDP (all with avail upgrades), they are instructed to move their upgrade to the TDP line? Why cant they just do a straight upgrade on the UDP line without transferring to TDP first? If other posts suggest we can do a straight upgrade on UDP, why does also having a TDP line require one to transfer it? Makes me nervous since I dont have a TDP line and want to upgrade my UDP without risk.

Transferring the upgrade is the preferred method. You don't have to worry about accidentally activating the SIM card. You can activate it normally so there are no pending activations. As far as I can remember you never even get a prompt that you will lose unlimited data.

Therefore most people will recommend you transfer the upgrade if you have that option.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

if I transfer the upgrade to my basic flip phone, then not activate it with the shipped SIM card and just put my existing S5 simcard (cut of course) into it, will that work? Or will I be forced to pay for a smartphone plan on the basic line for 2 years?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Beware when doing straigt upgrade and NOT powering up phone when it arrives. So I am considering this method to order my phone and plan to not power it up, then swap SIM cards first. However there is a wrench thrown in. I just watched this unboxing video of the s6+ (at technobuffalo website: /videos/samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-plus-unboxing/) and s soon as the box is opened, the phone powers up automatically. Not sure how this actually occurs. But if I go this route, Im thinking to do this underground (at a PATH train stop) between NJ and NY so it doesnt get signal. Any thoughts??

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Just visited Best Buy to look at the GS6+. The salesman said I can do the preorder and get the $200 gift card, and keep unlimited data but need to pay full price e of course. I'm a little skeptical of his promise I can get the $200 card, since I thought it required activating new plan, but he confirmed its good. Still $200 off retail, isn't as good as subsidized for $350. But is an option.

I'm having trouble transferring my upgrade on BestBuy. I clicked the "Make Any Phone Upgrade Your Upgrade" option and then proceeded to type in my information. The resulting message is, "You can upgrade today if you choose a phone eligible for Device Payment. With this plan you’ll pay for your device over several months rather than a full upfront cost as well as other pricing features." Although there are two other lines on my account that could easily transfer their upgrades...

Any suggestions? Is it better to transfer the upgrade and purchase the device from Verizon Online or Best Buy Mobile? I'm looking to get the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

EDIT: Trying to continue with the transferred upgrade and purchase at Verizon does not seem to work either. I select the S6 edge and I am only given the option of full retail or monthly payment plan. I noticed it also has a large icon stating, "Special Offer - Early Upgrade."
