[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok so we have something called a Nationwide Account Level Talk & Text Family Share 2000 plan. 2000 minutes and Unlimited Text and Data. Hmm I just looked and I think this was something Verizon had offered in the past. Guess I'm going to be charged $40 extra a month for 2 UDP lines. :'(

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If you buy a phone from BestBuy.com for the full price there is NO CONTRACT. Some people may purchase a new phone while they have a current contract in effect.

The UDP is at risk when one purchases a phone at a subsidized price since UDP plans are no longer offered.
Yes you can do that at vzw too or right in the store. People were talking about putting udp in new 2 year contract with discounted phone. It involved switching lines and sims and this and that and I could never follow it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am hoping someone can steer me in the right direction here.

I do not have unlimited data anymore but I would like to keep the price on my current data plan (4gb $30/month). I used the UDP method previously to keep the same price last year with no problems (used verizons website). I am looking to upgrade to the S6 edge which is currently on sale at best buy while keeping the 4gb $30/month. My plan is as follows:

Line 1 Basic - No upgrade
Line 2 Smartphone - Available (4gb/month)
Line 3 Basic - Available
Line 4 Basic - No upgrade

Should I use my upgrade or line 3s? What is the procedure once I get the phone via best buy mail?

Transfer line 3 upgrade to line four then order, don't use the SIM that comes with it. Throw it away the SIM that shipped with the new phone and then insert your original line 3 SIM inside the new phone.

Can I transfer upgrade to from line 2 to 4 instead? Do I have to sign up for a data plan on line 4 then cancel it?
(FYI line 2 is the one i want to upgrade to the S6)

L3: UDP No
L4: Basic Yes
L5: TDP Yes

I just want to know...there is absolutely no way for all 3 UDP lines to extend their contract date, correct?

Yes there is but not all at once! If you space out the upgrades you should be able to...

Could you elaborate? From my understanding, I know that at least 2 can be done (L1 using the TDP's upgrade, and L2 just using the regular BBM) but I'm unsure of how I could extend L3's contract date using the upgrade from the basic line.

Wait, does transferring an upgrade not extend any recipient phone's contract? I thought it could...

The only unlimited line you can extend is line 2 since it has an upgrade (the regular BBM should work fine). Based on your situation, it appears that Lines 1 and 3 are already under contract. There is no way to extend their contracts unless they expire before November 15th. If you transfer the upgrade from Line 5 and use it, all you are doing is extending Line 5. Transferring and using upgrades only extends the line from which the upgrade originated from.

very confused by this. My contracts do not expire for another couple of months, but I heard that this $20 increase per unlimited line would only be to those who use more than 10 GB, is this correct, or will everyone on a grandfathered unlimited plan be hurt by this? Looks like I am going to have to switch from Verizon to T-Mobile! I've been a loyal customer of Verizon for 7 years now, and this is just ridiculous.

This doesn't take effect on each line until they are out of contract.

And no, there is no 10GB limit.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

okay, but does that mean that once the contract is over, they will automatically charge the extra $20/line, or would it only be if you decided to upgrade to another 2 year contract, that being said, would I still be able to upgrade via two different lines without getting the $20 fee each line?

When the contract for the line is over, there will be an additional $20 charge.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 1: UDP with upgrade
Line 2: basic, w/no upgrade
Line 3: basic, w/upgrade
Line 4: basic, w/no upgrade

So to extend my 2 year, to lock in my current UDP price, I'd transfer the upgrade to line two or four, and use the upgrade? Could I then use my sim for that upgrade, or would it be safer to use the upgrade on line three for that?

Also, is it better to use Best Buy, or. Costco, for using the upgrade on line three for my UDP line?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I had a question as to whether the BBM would work for me so I don't get hit with the $20/ line increase for unlimited data. We just paid full price for a Motorola Pure on my wife's line and mine is arriving on Friday. We are both off contract and have been month to month for at least 2 years. So here's our situation:

L1 UDP Motorola Pure (on Friday) Upgrade available
L2 UDP Motorola Pure Upgrade available
L3 Basic phone Upgrade available

Can I purchase a couple of phones online at Best Buy, say 2 Turbos for $1 each, and extend my contract on the lines for 2 more years if I have the phones shipped to my home and activate them with the nano sims from our two Pure's? If so I would assume the extra $20/mo charge for unlimited data would not apply as long as I did this before 11/15. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Line 2: TDP no upgrade available

I'd like to do an upgrade on line 1 in order to lock in the price a little longer (and to not be wasting subsidized price), but I have no need for a new phone so my question is about selling the new phone. It would be nice to be able to sell it as "new and unopened", so is it possible to order the upgrade through Verizon or Best Buy but not remove the SIM card before selling, perhaps by waiting for the pending activation to fall off? I'm assuming not but wanted to be sure before I opened the box and lowered the resale value.

It's definitely risky not removing the SIM card. However, it should be fine as long as you transfer the upgrade to the tiered line before upgrading. This would cause the new SIM card to be programmed to your tiered plan rather than the unlimited. There is always some risk, but this would be the way to go.

Yes, that should work fine.

Thanks. I've never had to play the upgrade game before and wasn't sure. The last phone I ordered was the S3 sight unseen just because it was the last subsidized phone you could get and keep your UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I think the loophole has officially closed I successfully upgraded my UDP line in July kept current plan ignored all warnings. When I got the phone I let hubby, who also has UDP put his sim card (different phone number than what I upgraded) into my new phone. My contract renewed and he had a new phone no one lost UDP. Well on the 10th of October I price checked some phones on best buy got all the way through checkout upgrading his phone no problem. Figured pricing taxes etc. We decided to wait until the 15th or 1st of Nov to purchase due to money or lack of. I checked 3 or 4 days ago I could not even get to checkout screen it told me my unlimited data plan made me ineligible to upgrade please remove from cart and continue shopping. No work around that I can find not on Verizon website either. Yes on the 15th of Nov any UDP off contract will be charged $20 more a month and the others as they fall off contract. However!!!! If you use that much data, and don't want to be throttled, look at it this way you are now paying $50 a month for the best data. ..now I was naturally angry, I called found out early termination fees and price compared many options since my one UDP has 21 months left lol. The rep informed me that on the 15th we will now be allowed to upgrade UDP lined with the edge program. Not as good as the 2 yr disc. To me but nice to know we now have an option. We have two dummy lines we use to transfer upgrades to. We pay 9.99 a month after taxes and fees and local taxes and surcharges they cost us between $16 and $18 a month. For us the $20 bump upset me but now that I can drop thsee lines and in reality pay less for now since mine still has 21 months. He will be able to upgrade his phone and eat the $20 charge and our bill will be the same once we drop the two lines. When my contract is up I'll prob just take his old phone and let him get another so we aren't paying an extra $50 a month for 2 new phones or shop on ebay for late models. But it is nice to know we can now do edge without loosing UDP. Hope that helps some.
