[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

To everyone suggesting the transfer to a tiered line, remember this does not lock in UDP or the price. You must use the line's upgrade to reset the contract date. I have tried the BBY method 2x in two week on my two UDP lines with no issue. I have another friend who did BBY method. Last year I did the upgrade transfer method and no problem, but it DOES NOT lock you into a contract. Remember folks being on a contract is safer as if you are M2M VZW can increase your price for UDP, which they are doing this month, or can cancel it at any time.

This is exactly what I was afraid of. I thought back in Dec. it was a mistake that my line stayed month to month but now it does appear that in fact the UDP line doesn't change it's contract at all but only the line it transfers to. Although people have reported it did change their UDP lines contract. Uggghh! This could have been the worst information passed along in the thread tbh and it's been going on for a long time, this particular bit of info. Looks like I should've done the damn BB method, again!

That's because last year it was a glitch in Verizon's system when doing the transfer upgrade. However, the glitch did not appear on Best Buy's website which can also do a transfer upgrade. Further, that glitch has long since been fixed. Please stop spreading false information.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Then they will take my wife's sim card?

No. You'll be able to keep the SIM card. However, you need to move the phone back to the line that the upgrade was used on before returning.

That glitch has long been patched in Verizon's system. It is old news that no longer applies.

I really hope you're right dusoccer10! I was part of that glitch last year and I hope my contract changes when either the phone is actually shipped (by fedex) or when I activate it. If not then this "glitch" is still very real. I will certainly let everyone know once I get the phone (DT2).

I'm on udp, no contract.

When I went in to BB for their $249 T2, and asked about month to month plan, 12 gig, they said it would be $80 plus $40 per month line charge (not VZ's $20). - that didn't make sense to me, but...

Lets say that is true., if I change my plan with verizon first to their $80 month to month with $20 line charge, then should I be able to order Best Buy's phone, use my own SIM card, and continue with Verizon's pricing of $20 per month rather than the $40 they quoted me?

Ok so I move the phone back (assuming the defect allows) and use it for an hour....now take the sim out and keep it.....now return with no sim and they say where is the sim it came with? If it give itnto them they turn on phone with their sim and I'm screwed.

Agree with dusoccer10- rumors help no one and defeat the purpose of even having a forum

BB doesn't care about the SIM.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

The only time something has happened to cause the losing of unlimited is if a person did not follow the steps exactly or got Verizon involved when instructed not to do so. In other words, the mistakes have always been user error.

Here's the thing...this thread has over 10,000 comments with probably hundreds if not thousands of success stories going back to 2012. The slickdeals thread (Verizon - How to Use a Subsidized Upgrade and Keep Your Unlimited Data Plan Or Avoid A 2 year Data Plan on a Nationwide Basic Line - Slickdeals.net) has another 13,000 comments with the same amount of success stories. There is no reason to be chicken.

Further, you are looking to move your upgrade to a tiered line. This is ALLOWED and mentioned on Verizon's FAQ about upgrading (Upgrade Device FAQs | Verizon Wireless see number 6). Just upgrade already!

Agreedddd.

Are people thinking that simply transferring the upgrade from a UDP line to a TDP line puts the UDP automatically back on-contract?

Yes exactly as long as you purchase the phone and use it for an hour with tdp sim. Discard sim it came with.

Not what I asked though. I can't believe people are thinking that transferring the upgrade from a UDP line to a TDP line then doing nothing else would affect any contract.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here is my situation.

Nationwide Family Share 700 Plan
Line 1 - Galaxy Note 2 with Unlimited Data currently Month-to-Month
Line 2 - iPhone 5S with Tiered Data in Contract until 8/7/16
Line 3 - Dumb Phone with No Data currently Month-to-Month

I would like to upgrade Line 1 to Note 5 and tie it up for 2 years so I am not hit with a $20 increase in data charge. I would also like to upgrade Line 2 to iPhone 6S.

Here is my plan.

Line 1: Order Note 5 at bestbuy.com, have it shipped to home, when the phone arrives, destroy the sim card that comes with it, and use the sim card from my Note 2 on the new Note 5.

Line 2: On Best Buy website, transfer the upgrade from line 3 to line 2, then upgrade line 2 to iPhone 6S.

I plan on doing the line 1 upgrade before Nov 15 so I can avoid the $20 increase in my unlimited data plan. Line 2 may be done sometime around Christmas.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. I have 2 lines with UDP on the shared 1400 minutes. I ordered 2 new phones (separate orders) from Bestbuy. Both my lines were out of contract. I plan on keeping 1 phone and giving it to my daughter for Christmas and the 2nd phone will be a backup.

So when I receive the phones all I need to do is destroy the sim cards that came with the phones? No need to activate them for any amount of time?

Thanks in advance!

For Line 1, you would need to cut your SIM for that plan to work as a Note uses a micro while a Note 5 uses a nano. Other than that, your plan work.

As for Line 2, that plan will not work. Verizon does not allow upgrades to be transferred from basic to smartphone regardless of data plan. Now, you could just upgrade Line 3 by ordering the 6s. When it arrives, discard the SIM that comes with it and use the one in the 5s as they are both nano.

It does work if you follow the instructions.
Single Line UDP with no contract.
Ordered Note5 from BB online yesterday. Phone delivered today. Cut down micro sim from my Note3, installed in Note 5 and it fired up without a problem. Checked my account on VZW...shows my Note5 active and I still have UDP.

Thank you.

For line 1, can I just go to the VZW store and say I need a new sim card because I bought a used Note 5 and want to use it on my line?

For line 2, I thought I read that if I upgrade a line with a dumb phone to a smartphone, they will tie the data plan to a 2-year contract, is this not true?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How did you get that gift card?

When I bought it they had a promotion going that gave out $150 BB Gift Card. I was a little leary about it because it might "highlight" my account so I'm waiting a few months before I use it. I was perfectly content with the new, subsidized phone - the Gift Card was hot fudge with a cherry on top.
