[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have a question - I have 5 lines that are on an UDP - 2 are smartphones and 3 are flip phones (basic line). I have eligible upgrades on all 3 flip phones lines. Can I buy the Samsung S7 on a flip phone line and once it comes in switch my SIM card over to the phone before turning it on or activating without losing my UDP? I know I've done this in the past and they add on a data plan to the flip phone but once I activated it on my smartphone line it dropped off and kept my original plan on that basic line. Does anyone know if this still works? Thanks!

You can. The problem is Verizon locks the dumb phone line into paying for data for two years. If you don't activate the phone on the dumb line it won't add the data. The problem is if you swap phones or dial 228 on the dumb phone or will add the data for two years.

Great, thanks for the response. We don't plan on changing the dumb phone line or anything - it's been a dumb phone line for over 10+ years. So I should be find with what I plan to do then, correct? Thanks again I appreciate the response :)

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So my contract is up 3/28 and I have a upgrade available now on the line, however the billing cycle is 3/1-4/1. Is there a problem that the CED is during the current billing cycle to keep it from adding the $20 to UDP?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Maybe I'm just getting old, but this seems to be getting a lot more confusing than it needs to be. And the slickdeals link is really no help these days since nothing is dated, and you can't tell what's current. So let me ask this and see if it's as simple as I hope:

L1 UDP month to month upgrade available galaxy s4
L2 TDP upgrade available. galaxy s4

Can I upgrade to an s7 on my wife's L2 line, using her upgrade, then after activating it, simply switch the S7 using Verizon's web site to L1 and keep the UDP intact and not trigger the $20 extra? She's happy with keeping the s4, so I would just reactivate it after making the switch.

My understanding is that this will work.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

You only incur the $20 data fee if your line is out of contract. As long as the line is in contract, no $20 fee will be applied. You can upgrade to an s7 using your wife's upgrade (I'm assuming you want her upgrade? ) and when you get the phone, just take the sim out your old phone and put in the s7 BEFORE YOU TURN THE NEW PHONE ON....it will activate on your line and your wife can continue to use your line as normal. You may want to check if the s4 and s7 use the Same sim size.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

And that's where I'm getting mixed messages. If I understand Verizon's web site, I should be able to activate the s7 on her line, and then redesignate that phone to my line and put her s4 back on her line. If I simply swap the sim card before turning on the phone, am I not creating problems for the upgrade that's expected on her line?

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Alright, I'm going to try to keep this as simple as possible. I have done this years ago so I'm not sure whats changed. I have 2 lines on my account and would like to pre order the S7 and pay the $199.99 upgrade price(signing another 2 year contract), not the monthly payments.
Main Line: Off Contract, Upgrade Eligible S4, UDP(off contract so I'm already paying the extra $20 for UDP)
Line 2: On Contract, No Upgrade S5, TDP
Can I still send my upgrade to line 2 on the Verizon website, activate it on line 2 when I receive the S7 by dialing 228, then activate it on my main line afterwards and keep my UDP like in the past? Also will my S4 SIM card fit in the S7 for this to work? Any help is appreciated.

Edit: Just read gnusman's posts, seems like a similar situation, except I would be using my UDP upgrade and was wondering if the S4 SIM card would fit the S7 with my info.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm pretty sure that if you use the upgrade on the UDP line, then you give up the UDP unless you buy at full retail, which you can do at the VZ Store. And from what I'm seeing the SIM sizes are different. S4 used a Micro, S7 uses a Nano.

You will lose your unlimited.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So will I have to wait to use my line 2 upgrade or do I have to pay full retail because I'm already off contract?

You can use the TDP upgrade for a phone. You could also transfer your UDP upgrade over to get a phone, but you will have to either use that phone on the TDP line or sale it, you will never be able to put it on to your UDP line.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I thought you were taking your wife's upgrade or at least that's how I understood it...anyways, yes it would create problems if she did want to upgrade unless the phone is purchased full price or thru a 3rd party.... I took my mom's upgrade and got the v10. She still has her S3 with 2gig plan and all I did was convert my micro sim from my g3 to nano sim and put in my new v10....zero issues with billing or service, etc

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

If you're still on-contract but have an upgrade available, will the extra $20 kick in on the UDP line if you transfer the upgrade to another line to use it?

The $20 is only dealing with whether or not you are on contract. It has nothing to do with what phone you are using or if you have an upgrade available. Just be aware that if you purchase a phone using the upgrade from a UDP line, if you ever put that phone on that line, you will almost certainly lose your UDP.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Not a good thing! Well, I'll see if I stay with VZW or I leave with my N6P. That's one of the main reasons I bought my Nexus and not a bootloader locked phone from big red.

I forgot, there is one way to not have to $20 added. If you have a business account, the extra fee isn't added.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So will I have to wait to use my line 2 upgrade or do I have to pay full retail because I'm already off contract?

Do the upgrade and sell the phone for a profit, just pay full retail, or you can do an upgrade through Verizon since you are paying the extra $20. Not sure how that last option works, but I have seen it mentioned on Slickdeals. Personally, I did the upgrade and sold the phone, and will pay full price later.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So have you tried this successfully? I'm in the exact same situation. Just the way Mr. Toad stated, a Best Buy rep told me the same thing except the part about the last part.

Thanks

I'm curious because of this line in the notice re: the increase.

If any of your lines with an unlimited data feature are currently on a two-year contract, the increase will not begin until you complete your contract term or enter into
a new one.

To me, I read this as if you enter a new contract (renew), you'll get hit with the $20. But that doesn't make sense since you won't be month-to-month.

Re: [Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi all! I know that everyone's situation is slightly different, so I'd appreciate any feedback on mine:

Verizon Family Plan:
L1: UDP Samsung Galaxy S5 - Upgrade eligible - Contract expires 4/11/16
L2: TDP iPhone 5S - Upgrade eligible - Contract expires 5/31/16

Goals:
1) Upgrade L1 to Galaxy S7 without losing UDP
2) Avoid $20 / month additional fee for UDP
3) Get S7 at subsized rate ($199)

Based on this, what options do I have available to achieve my goals? They're in priority order, so if needed, I will pay full retail price for the phone to keep my UDP.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!
