[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So, exactly how do you transfer the upgrade on Verizon's web site?

I only see where I can do Upgrade Device, and choose a transfer there, but unless I actually continue to purchase an upgrade, the transfer doesn't seem to stick.
I have the same question. I "transferred" the upgrade to a dumb phone, then clicked like I was going to do an upgrade & now I get an error when I try to check the status of my upgrades. :(

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Question...let's take this scenario:

Line 1 - Unlimited - Upgrade available
Line 2 - 2GB data - Upgrade ready in 6 months

If I transfer my upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2 and get a new smart phone subsidized. Transfer the phone from Line 2 back to Line 1. Will Line 2 still have the upgrade in 6 months? When will Line 1 have an upgrade ready again?

Another scenario:
Line 1 - Unlimited - No upgrade

Open Line 2 with Amazon.com. Transfer Amazon phone to Line 1 and replace it with a dumb phone. Will there be an ETF with Amazon or as long as I keep any sort of phone on the line it'll be okay?

The first scenario is easy. Transfer the Upgrade from Line 1 Unlimited to Line 2 and the following will happen, assuming they haven't killed the loophole.....

Line 2 will be forced to choose a tiered plan but Line 1 will still have UNLIMITED and have their contract extended for 2 years and be eligible to upgrade in 20 months.

Line 2 will still have their original contract and be eligible to upgrade in 6 months.

By the way, if a line is eligible to upgrade in its own right, the system will not let you transfer an upgrade from another line to it, so if you do nothing and wait, after 6 months line 2 is eligible on its own and you will no longer be able to transfer the upgrade from Line 1 to Line 2, so I would act within the next 6 months.

From what I've heard, Amazon can charge an ETF if you add or remove data plans within the first 6 months, so be careful.

Many Best Buy stores will honor Amazon prices through their price matching; Best Buy doesn't charge a fee as far as I know. I would recommend checking into that route if you find what you want on Amazon.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Here is my scenario then, BOTH my lines have an upgrade. line one unlimted. line two dummy. Should I go into the store? And how would I approach a rep?

some people have claimed that VZW will allow you to have a line with no phone on it so maybe that is what he means by dummy line, but I was under the impression that you can't do that, that you needed a phone on each line.

The reason it matters is if you don't have a phone to reactivate after you switch the new phone to the unlimited line, I am not sure how it would work.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm in the same/similar boat as above. I have a family plan with five lines. Currently have two lines that are available for upgrade; mine (thunderbolt) and an Unused line (nonsmartphone - no longer have it as it was lost).

I would like to keep the unlimited data on the Thunderbolt, and I know the easiest way to do this would be to forfeit my upgrade and use the dummy line upgrade.

My problem is that I need two smartphones, so I would like to actually put a smartphone on that dummy line. I just purchased the 8x with the dummy line (it's in the mail)... so is there any way I could transfer my upgrade (on the t-bolt line) to another line to utilize both upgrades?

Jeeze. this is entirely too confusing. haha.

First use the unused line's upgrade to get a smartphone on that line. You will have to pick a tiered data plan for that line. Then activate the phone on this line (tiered data plan line).

Next switch the new phone to your unlimited data line (the 1 that currently has the thunderbolt on it) and switch the thunderbolt to the tiered data plan line.

Next, transfer the upgrade from the unlimited data line to the tiered data plan line. Then upgrade on the tiered data plan line.

Some posters are reporting that you can't do the upgrade transfers online anymore. If that is the case, call in and see if you can get a rep to do the upgrade transfer via phone.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

just a flip phone. But I wonder if I can add a line but then I would have to keep the 2gb data? Or could I just add another dumbphone? Only thing is I don't want to loose my unlimited. And can it be a authorized retailer? I have always been told avoid them.

Why do you have to add a line if you already have an unused dumbphone line that is eligible for an upgrade?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I really wanted a DNA and the new S4 when it comes out. Would be nice to have those along with Gnex... might I be too greedy?

First, upgrade on the dumbphone line. You will have to select a 2GB data plan or higher. We will call this your tiered data plan line. Then activate the new smartphone you get on the tiered data plan line. Then switch the new smartphone to your unlimited data line and reactivate the dumbphone on the tiered data plan line and remove the data plan (choose pay per use for data).

You will need a new SIM card when you switch the new smartphone to your unlimited data line. Just take it into the store and they will give you one. You can also order one online.

Verizon and Best Buy don't charge a fee if you drop the data plan after upgrading; Amazon and Walmart do.

That's fine but if you add a line to your family plan and your current plan is no longer offered, you have to do it through Verizon either in store or by phone. Online or through a 3rd party you can't keep your existing plan if you add a line anymore.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Be careful in store because you may get a rep that will say you will lose unlimited. If so, leave and come back some other day. I like doing it over the phone because it is easier to just hang up and call back.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

so over the phone I would just say I want to upgrade my phone? I'm just nervous about loosing the unlimited is all. And if they say you won't loose it and I do... just nervous.

yes, you can do it over the phone that way on the dumbphone line. They will ship it out to you the same as if you order it online. And don't worry about losing unlimited data when you upgrade the dumbphone line because it doesn't have unlimited data to begin with.

I would check your account online after you activate the new smartphone to make sure, but as long as you activate it on what was the dumbphone line, it won't affect the unlimited data line.

But you can do it in store, too.

Now when you go to switch the new smartphone to the unlimited data plan line, you need a new SIM card so you will have to either go into the store or order one online and wait for it to be shipped to you.
