[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Yeah, me too. Because my billing cycle date is in 18 days. Perhaps I should have planned that better....just in case.
I think it should be fine. Did the upgrade date on your unlimited data line reset to 20 months from today? If so, that means your contract has been renewed on the unlimited data line for 2 years and should be locked in 14 days.

Yep, 4/2/2015

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have one single individual line. I qualify for an upgrade. I just went bestbuy.com and did the simulation upgrade. Chose the note 2 and Low and behold ..they actually have the keep current data plan option there. I didnt upgrade just yet since im waiting for either galaxy note 3 or htc one.
Hopefully this loophole lasts. I may pull the trigger when the s4 comes out just so I can be on contract maintaining UNL DATA

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello everyone! Thank you for all the helpful information here. I have a quick question that I was hoping someone could help me with (and I don't think this has been answered yet).

I have the Family Plan. 2 Smart Phone and 1 basic phone. All are up for upgrade. Per the instructions, I was planning on upgrading using the basic line. My question is once I do the first upgrade, will I need to wait a year and a half for the upgrade on the basic line to come back? Or, if once I cancel the phone on the basic line, will the upgrade come back? Basically, will I be able to do 2 upgrades ASAP or will I have to do one and wait for the other one?

Any responses will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Ya, but when you go to activate the phone, the Verizon system switches you off of unlimited data. Your option then is to argue that since the bestbuy.com paperwork says keep current data plan, you should be switched back. It works for some people, but no guarantees.

Not following what you wrote, but if all 3 lines are up for an upgrade now, you could do all one at a time now. The key is to transfer the upgrades from the unlimited data lines to the basic line and activate the phones initially on the basic line before you switch them to the unlimited data lines.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

ok possible stupid question. when I use my upgrade on my basic line and active the new phone with data. can I then just use another upgrade (have 3) with out re activating my basic phone to get the 2nd phone? Do I even have to activate the first new phone to use my upgrade on the 2nd phone. example if I where to order a gs3 on my basic line with the upgrade, then use another upgrade on that line to have another gs3 shipped at the same time? this is sounding like it might cause some problems if you can do that. I think its prob less crazy to order the first gs3, get it, activate, reactivate the basic, then use another upgrade to order the 2nd gs3. what do you think?

So best way to win the argument would be upgrade through bestbuy.com then when u get the phone in the mail take it to a VZW corporate store along with the printed PDF contract from bestbuy to activate. This will make sure the phone gets activated keeping all current plan/features???

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I read through this thread and didn't see my situation mentioned anywhere, so I was wondering if anyone had any insight.

I have two smartphones that each have an individual plan that has unlimited text and unlimited data (NATIONWIDE TALK & TEXT 450) on the same account. When I log into the account on VZW, I can see both lines. Both are eligible for upgrade. I see no option to transfer upgrade. I am assuming this is because they aren't a family plan, but are individual. While I would like to keep both phones unlimited, I can't afford a new device off contract.

I would be willing to sacrifice one unlimited plan if it allowed both lines to upgrade, but without an option to transfer upgrades, I can't see how this would work. I would consider adding a basic phone if I could get it for the $10-$15 / month people are talking about, but I was told (via VZW chat) I would have to add any additional lines as individual plans and the cheapest is $39.99 / month.

Ideally, I would combine the two lines into one nationwide family plan (while keeping unlimited), add a dumb phone for $10 / month and transfer upgrades. Is that even an option any more???

Does anyone have any recommendations for how I can upgrade my devices and keep unlimited (other than buying off-contract replacements)?

Thanks in advance!

No, I definitely wouldn't do it that way. They will tell you that activating it will cause you to lose your unlimited.

I know someone IRL who activated the bestbuy.com phone themselves, then the VZW system automatically switched them to 2GB. They then called and convinced a supervisor to switch back to unlimited because the paperwork from bestbuy.com said keep current plan. But make no mistake about this - they were switched off of unlimited and had to argue to get it switched back.

You can't transfer upgrades between 2 individual accounts.

It should be an option still if the codes are in the system. It is just a matter of getting someone on the phone who knows how to do it. Keep calling until you get someone who can help you.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Anyone know how long it takes to show the device active on the Verizon website?

Got my phone today upgraded from the basic line.

Activated it. The website is showing my basic line as having the S3 attached to it, but when I go to activate or switch device I get this....

Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this MDN but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance.

Well, the phone IS activated as I can make calls from it....thinking the website hasn't updated yet? Its only been about a half an hour, so I am hoping that's the problem.

Anyone else experience this?

Also this is the first time I've had two LTE phones on the same account. (Wife still has iPhone 4). Can I swap sims between my cracked screen Bionic and S3 and do the line swap that way? Or would that be a bad idea?

Thanks for the info. I chatted with Verizon and was able to switch to the family plan really easily (and kept unlimited). I will have to either call or go into store to add the extra line for $9.99. I can already see the plan has changed on my account online. I did not see, however, an option to transfer upgrade. Is that only an option when you have a device on the plan that is not already eligible for upgrade (like when I add a new basic phone) or should I already be seeing that?

Thanks again!

You can transfer upgrades between two single lines on the same account as long as both lines aren't already eligible for upgrades in their own right. However, as he said, it's not possible if each line is on a different account.

Anyone try this through amazon yet? Gs3 is 50 on upgrade but their tos is a bit confusing.

Amazon does charge a fee for making changes to the data plan. Typically, (although recent comments make this not a for sure thing) Best Buy will match Amazon's price and Best Buy does not charge a fee for changing the data plan after purchasing it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ah OK. Also Amazon's tos says if you due activate the device from the line you set it up on you can be charged $400. Best buy might be the best bet then.

Best Buy changed their policy in March corporate wide. In a widely-reported press release, they announced they do not price match on contract phones any longer. It is on their website, too. They will no longer do it. It used to be done on a store-by-store basis, but no more.
