[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Mine was changed completely without my permission! I called Verizon, Best Buy...was disconnected from each several times...from dropped calls on their end or my end when trying to communicate with each other, after they each stated that it was the other's fault.

Finally I printed out all of my documents and went to the local Verizon store...they can't help...they point the finger at Best Buy. Management suggested I request the legal department...finally got a CS rep that cared. She had me fax the documents and should be calling me back later. Wilmington, NC Verizon Call Center - - - they kick booty!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Can someone walk me through my particular situation?

I currently have a SG3 on unlimited but do not have a second dummy line. I would like to uograde to the SG4. Do I just need to add the second line and preorder the SG4 and then switch? Now re the dummy line - I have an old flip phone that I would like to use on the dymmy line so how would that work?

Could someone walk me through each step of what to do?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

So I am finally due for an upgrade but Im waiting for a good phone that I will want for 2 years. I am currently on an unlimited data plan and I understand that the only way for me to keep it is if I pay full price off contract for my next phone.

So being the tech nerd that I am, I want to try out an i device since I have 2 weeks to return it with Verizon.

So the 2 questions I have are the following.

1) I buy an iphone off contract, and return it during the 2 week period. Will I have unlimited data back on my phone once I return the iphone?

2) I buy an iphone on contract and return it during the 2 week period. Will I have unlimited data back on my phone once I return the iphone?

I basically want to keep my unlimited plan to my next android phone but want to make sure it carries over. Please no flaming, I just want to test the other side so I can have a stronger argument as to why I like android

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I'm about to do the loophole upgrade next week (thursday) when the S4 officially releases. I understand all of the steps and how to do them, except for the very last part. How do you (or what is the best way) go about cancelling the newly added data plan on the dummy line? Just call verizon and tell them you want to go back to the basic line? Because I'm assuming you can't do that part online. Which if i am understanding correctly, is the ONLY part you cannot do via online.

First, you don't have to buy a unsubsidized device to keep unlimited; read the first post in this thread if you have a family plan; if not, you can add a dummy line and use that to get a subsidized phone.

Second, if you return in the 2 week return window, you can get unlimited reinstated. You may have to call up Verizon if it doesn't automatically come back though.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I was looking at the original post on page 1 and went through about 15 pages of this thread. One part confuses me.. If you transfer an upgrade I was under the impression that the phone that the upgrade was transferred from is still renewing its contract and therefore still would lose its unlimited.

Situation
Mary - Unlimited - Droid 4 (4G) with busted screen - uses 5 gigs of data would like to keep unlimited - eligible for upgrade now
Sue - Unlimited - Incredible (3G) - uses 1 gig of data - would like to keep unlimited but not a deal breaker - eligible for upgrade now
Sara - Dumb phone - not eligible for upgrade.

Mary is the one that needs a new phone but since she doesnt want to lose unlimited we figured the path would be upgrade Sue to S4, get phone delivered, activate it, reactivate her Incredible, mary then uses new S4

But the more I read this, it sounds like Mary could transfer he upgrade to Sara, Sara could buy the S4, she could activate it for a day and then reactivate her dumb phone. Then Mary could use the S4. And if that works, it appears there would be no reason Sue couldnt do the same a week later as we could have two S4s while still keeping the unlimited?

Is that really right? I thought when you transferred your upgrade you still have to renew(which would make sense) and therefore the person dong the transfer would lose their unlimited upon their renewal even if the upgrade is getting transferred to another line only for the phone to be ESN swapped back later.

Think of transferring the upgrade and actually using it as two completely separate things. Using the upgrade on a line is what causes the loss of unlimited, transferring shouldn't effect it.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Wow... Wasted a whole day with dumb verizon store reps who said i cant keep my unlimited data line by transferring my upgrade to my other basic line. I should have just done the steps the op posted. Got my free droid dna on the way. Just waiting to see if this loophole sill works. Will let you guys know.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Successfully ordered my GS4 via a transfer upgrade. Go to My Verizon>>Upgrade. Activate online when you receive the phone on the limited data line and switch phone afterward. Remember, you can always choose the line to upgrade online. Good luck!

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Looking for some help - it seems like I am close but something does not look right, because I'm being asked to select a data package.

1. My Verizon -> Upgrade Device
2. Selected dumb phone line, clicked Transfer Upgrade within it, Transferred upgrade from an unlimited line that was eligible for upgrade
3. Clicked 'Next'
4. Selected Galaxy S4 -> Preorder
-- Redirected to preorder.verizon.wireless.com site
-- Proceeded through screens
-- had to reselect galaxy S4
-- On Wireless Plan page, selected keep individual plan (nationwide account level talk family share 700)
-- On select features page was required to select a data package. It won't let me proceed without selecting a data package.

I don't want a data package on the dump phone line. When we upgraded my wife's the other month, I did it through Costco and they set up this dumb phone line to transfer upgrade to, then activated a dumb phone on it, then activated her new Note II on her unlimited line. I only pay 9.99 for the unlimited line and would like to keep it that way. Suggestions?

Thanks!

Activating a smart phone requires a data package. When you move it back off by reactivating the dumb phone, you can cancel the data plan.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I am on a family share plan with three smart phone lines. We all have unlimited data. Out of the three of us, my husband does not need an unlimited data plan. At the moment, I am eligible for an upgrade. If I transfer the upgrade to him and he gets a new phone, it will mean he loses unlimited data, correct? So what if he activates the phone on that line, then deactivates it and gives it to me and then reactivates his Razr Maxx. If I come into a store with the phone he just bought for himself, will I be able to keep my unlimited data?

Yes, but you shouldn't have to go into the store.

Yeah you can do it yourself online and save a trip to the store.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

How can I activate a phone without going into a store? I guess I don't understand that part.

It can be done online, in the store or over the phone.

Thank you for the help. I went ahead and ordered. When ordering I made sure that it was showing my dumb phone line, which I transferred the upgrade to. I took screen shots for later reference. Then they sent an email confirmation that shows the line I transferred the upgrade from. I hope this ends up working out and I don't loose unlimited data or end up with an extra $30 data plan..

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hi, I realize some of this has been answered but I just want to verify 2 questions that I have.

First off my wife and I are on a family share plan. I currently have unlimited data, and she does not, she has 2 gb. We are both currently eligible for an upgrade on both lines currently. I will be upgrading my iPhone 4 to a GS4 on Thursday in the store. I will be upgrading her line though and activating the GS4 on her line, so that I do not lose unlimited data on my line. Where I am a bit confused as I have researched this is, after I get home, how long do I have to wait to switch the GS4 back over to my line. I have been told and read that either I have to wait until after midnight at the earliest or wait a full 24 hours to switch it back to my line, or I risk losing my unlimited data because there is a SIM card on the phone, and I have to wait for a R4? to go from pending to permanent on her line or it will still appear to look like an upgrade on my line even though I will upgrade and activate on her line. I was told to call tech support to veify this has taken place?
2nd question, I do not see on Verizon's website where I can go to transfer my upgrade over to her line on line without having to call in. Maybe I am overlooking the area on the website.
So to sum it up my 2 questions are:
1. Do I have to wait any period of time, or verify the R4? Has updated on her line before I switch it over to my line?
2. Where do I go on Verizon's website to transfer my upgrade to her line for when she upgrades?
Thank you for your time!
PS. And one more question, do I have to go to a Verizon Wireless Corporate store to get an additional sim card when I switch it over to my line?

I will answer the 2nd question first. If you are getting the phone at the store then you will transfer the update there, not online. If both are more do for updates you can not transfer them. Just use the update on her phone, and if she wants a update later transfer yours to her.

About a month ago now my wife wants the iPhone5 (also had a SIM card). We got the phone on her son's line. As soon as we got home (10 to 15 minutes) we put his phone back on his line, then her new phone with the same SIM card that came with the phone on her line. She keep unlimited. So there is no time period.

Add the data package. When the phone arrives activate in the line with data. The dumb phone line will either automatically deactivate or you do so online/call VZW.
