[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, so what you're saying is the rep tried to feed me a bunch of crap and that they're not allowed to require you to keep the phone active on the line for a certain amount of time before a different number can be switched to it?
yep. This is what the licenses say: Verizon "shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and applications of their choice."

It's referred to as the open access restrictions in Verizon's Block C licenses.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

That's good to hear. So now I just need to get one of the 3 available upgrades transferred to the 4gb line, as it doesn't have an upgrade avilable. Then continue as stated throughout the thread. Am I correct in that?

that would be the easiest way to do it since if you use the upgrades on the basic line you will have to pick a data plan and then drop it. You can transfer online if you buy through verizon online.

Remember only Verizon, Best Buy and Costco don't charge the secondary ETF. Most 3rd party retailers like amazon do because they are not bound by the licenses like Verizon is since they are not a party to the licenses. I don't know why Best Buy and Costco don't charge the secondary ETF but so far, they don't. Of course, check with them to make sure this is still their policy if you order from them.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

My plan was to order through Verizon online as soon as I go back through and find where it tells how to move an upgrade from one phone to another. Now once I get new phone freed up, is it easier to switch my number to it myself or take it to the store and get it done since in going to need a new sim?

go to myverizon and click on upgrade. IIRC, you click on the phone that has the upgrade you want to transfer from (donor line) and it will give you the option to transfer the upgrade to a line that currently does not have an upgrade available. I don't have an upgrade available right now to test it. But it was very clear when I did it, I just can't remember if I clicked on the donor or donee line.

Now once I get new phone freed up, is it easier to switch my number to it myself or take it to the store and get it done since in going to need a new sim?
if you read back a page or 2, others tell you how to do it online yourself without getting a new SIM.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

10-4. I must have missed the part about doing it without a new sim. Also does it matter which upgrade I transfer to the phone(my unlimited line has one and the 2 basic lines have one)? This hopefully is the last thing I'll have to ask, it's about switching the number back to the original phone. The line that I'm going to be using to do this is my sisters and I won't actually be able to get my hands on her phone because she lives about 4-5 hours away. Not exactly sure what phone she has, I believe its 4g(don't know if that makes a difference or not), but I want to see exactly what information from her phone I need to put her number back on it after I activate the S4...sim #, serial number, etc, since I won't actually have the phone in front of me.

No, but you don't have to transfer the basic phone upgrades to your sister's line. Just upgrade on the basic line, add a data plan, activate the 4G LTE phone on that line and then reactivate the basic phone on the line. The data plan should drop off automatically, but last time I did this a 75MB data plan stayed on the line and I had to call to get it removed.

You won't need any of that info. She has to turn off her phone while you activate the upgrade on her line. Then you turn off the new phone and reactivate hers on her line. Her phone info will already be in the system. The 3G to 4G LTE activation has caused some people some problems that they had to call into resolve.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Does her phone need to be on or off when I go to reactive hers on her line? That's its I swear.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I have read the 80 or so pages of post and don't remember seeing this. I have unlimited on my line with an upgrade want to purchase a moto x thru motomaker but when i try to transfer the upgrade to one of the tiered line and go into motomaker it just shows my line not the one I transfered to . Can I order the phone on my line and just activate it on my tired line with the on line tool.

her phone needs to be on when you are reactivating it on her line and the new phone needs to be off. So whatever phone is currently on the line should be shut off and whatever phone you want to put in the line needs to be on. I think they tell you that when you are going through the process online.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok, thanks for your help and patience DayThyme. Hopefully I truly understand everything like I think I do. Guess I'll get the phone ordered here in the next few days and get started.

the moto maker thing is something out of the ordinary so I am not sure if anyone here has done that. Try asking on the moto x forum.

Also, you can try it and see what happens and return the phone and have unlimited data restored if they take it away. Just whatever you do, do not select a new plan.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I've been pouring through this thread... haven't stumbled on this answer yet, figure I'll ask... 2 lines on Nationwide Loyalty Share 550 plan. One of the lines has unlimited data. I want to upgrade without losing unlimited. Can I add a brand new 3rd line to the family plan and get a Moto X, transfer the Moto X from the brand new line to the unlimited line, then downgrade the brand new line to a $9.99 dumb phone rate? Will this work?

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

I really hate to ask this but could someone please walk me through the steps it takes to activate the dumb phone.

Here is what I have done up to this point.

Went to verizon, added a new line to my account, got the LG G2, had it activated.
I was told I could do a *228 from my old dumb phone to activate it but that failed. I can't for the life of me figure out what to do to make the change on verizons website. I'm pretty much in need of step by step instructions to do this, if I can't figure it out my wife is going to flip... :/

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Log onto your verizon online account. Go to myverizon and click activate or switch a device. Then select the line the LG G2 is on and it should walk you through the process of activating a different phone on that line. Is the basic phone a phone that has already been on your account before?

Also, if you bought a prepaid verizon basic phone, that won't work unless the phone has been used as a prepaid phone for a certain period of time.

Post a separate thread about adding a line to a Loyalty Share 550 plan in the Verizon forum. I think it can be done, but it is not the typical situation. There are some posters who are knowledgeable about the loyalty share plans and they may see your thread if you make it a separate thread.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

No, the old dumb phone has never been on this account. When I try the activate or switch device, it doesn't give me the option to switch to the old phone. The only options I get are the 2 smart phones I have now (wife and mine) with unlimited data.

OK, not following you now. I thought the situation you had was this:

1. You had a family share plan with 2 unlimited data lines on it;
2. You added a line and when you added that line you got an LG G2 and had to pick a data plan; and
3. You have a dumbphone (that is not a verizon prepaid phone, or if it is, has been in use for the required amount of time as a prepaid phone) that you want to put on the new line but that has never before been on your account.

I had the exact same situation in january. When I went to activate or switch a phone onto the new line, it asked me if this was a device that had been on my account. I said no. It asked for the IMEI of the device and I typed it in and it worked.

Were you asked if the device you were trying to activate had ever been on your account before? You should be asked that.

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

OK I am getting somewhere now, I was looking at the page all wrong. I am now to the point where I need to select the new plan for the dumb phone. Problem now is that it is making me choose a $10 data plan, I don't want or need that at all. Cost will be $9.99 + $10 data plan. Any way I can get out of the data plan with the dumb phone?
