If it doesn't you argue for your UDP back or return the phone and get it back that way. At least 2 people here have done that and my friend IRL did it, too.

But if you are going to go with Best Buy wait for the $50 reserve gift card. It is usually beginning of February when you sign up and mid-February when you can start buying and get the $50 gift card. That way you would actually MAKE $50 per line by upgrading to the S4.

people have been doing this for months now. My friend did it almost a year ago. The glitch is in best buy's system and verizon has known about this for quite some time and hasn't gotten best buy to correct it.

Assuming this means that the upgrade originated on the dumbphone line and was not transferred from an UDP line, there is no danger of losing your UDP. None. If you can't do the switch yourself online, you can call or go to a store and have them do it. They system will not kick you off of UDP for activating a phone purchased with a dumbphone's upgrade.

And even if something crazy happened and it did, you would be able to get them to switch you right back since you did not use an UDP's upgrade.

ok so everything went smooth the phones are working buuuuuttttt.. when i go to myverizon to transfer the upgrade it states that line C still Has a new phone that needs to be activated? when i click line c and go to activate sure enough it asks is this your new device and shows the htc one which we have activated already??? also in the pic where it shows our phones it has line A as an htc one and line c as an htc one shouldnt line c now show his old phone since we switched it back??

Try this:

Sounds like an issue with the automated system.

1. Take the Sim out of the HTC One and put in in your old phone for Line A
2. Power on the old Line A phone until it is activated.
3. Take the HTC One and insert the original sim that it came with--the one listed on your order receipt--8914XXXXXXXXXX
4. Call 877-807-4646 and enter the # for Line C. Follow the verification prompts. If it says success---great If it says, your call is being transferred, hang up.
5. Power on the HTC One and verify in the settings or make a test call to see if it recognizes the phone # for Line C
6. Login to your account and check to see if Line C shows the HTC One and Line A shows the original phone.
7. Now try to transfer the upgrade like you were doing before......Does it still say you have pending equipment?
8. If, no, power the HTC One down and put the sim in the Windows phone
9. Turn off the phone on Line A and put the sim card in the HTC One.
10. Power on both the HTC One and the Windows phone.
11. If the answer to #7 is YES, let me know.

Line A is a UDP line, but the sim in Line A originally came from another phone that she had previously.

It sounds like the automated system never recognized the subsidized phone as being activated on Line C (the tiered line)

Just wanted her to switch everything back and put the sim that came with HTC One back in the HTC One and retry the activation on Line C, so she can do another transfer:

the Upgrade from Line B (with UDP) back to Line C--the tiered line--and get another discounted phone.

I just have one question concerning this:

Does this method lock me into a contract?

I've been month to month with my unlimited plan for almost 2 years and enjoy the freedom and flexibility of having no contract at all.

Any information regarding this would be most helpful.

yes, of course it does. Anytime you get a subsidized phone it is on the condition that you enter into a new 2 year contract or extend your contract by 2 years. There is no way around that if you want a subsidized phone.

This thread is only about how to use an UDP line's upgrade without losing your UDP.

Sorry if this is a noob question, but can I upgrade another line on a family plan, and then activate the phone using old sim on main line? Main line is currently still in contract and is using gnex. Will this take away the udp on the line that gets upgraded? Or does it only trigger removal of udp when you activate the new phone?

Bad move. You should have gotten another subsidized iPhone 5s when you added a line to sell to recoup the cost of the added line and bought a used basic phone off of ebay for your mom to use on the added line. If you are still within the 14 day return period, return the basic phone and pay $200 to get a subsidized iPhone 5s and sell it. You need to buy a used basic phone to put on the line first.

I was thinking that at first... But a couple of things.
1. I haven't got the phone yet, VZ just shipped it, probably getting it tomorrow or Tuesday. Won't there be a $35 re-stocking fee? Anyways, the phone is for my mother and she needed one asap. If I would have purchased an iPhone I would've had to put it up for sale while finding a basic phone off craigslist/ebay for her to use. Plus, no way she'd be able to use an iPhone, she could barely take care of her T-Mobile pre-paid phone.
2. My family and my folk are kind of tight on cash right, now I don't have $220 for a phone, the whole reason she was asking for a free phone. I did just see a 5c at Best Buy for $50. Does that apply only to new customers and upgrades or is it also for added lines? How much could I get for a 16gb 5c and how quickly could I get rid of it?
3. Though phone I got her was free, but still I somehow owe a $109.99 up front for her line already? I know the line is $9.99/month, the phone is free. Where did the $100 come from?

IIRC not if you never open it or activate it. Call before you return it and explain that it has never been opened or activated. At worse they can give you the $30 courtesy credit that all verizon reps can give you.

no, you do both at the same time. I bought one off of ebay and if you are willing to pay expedited shipping, it can get to you quickly.

Actually, all you need to do is cancel the line within 3 days and return the phone unactivated. You will be refunded the activation fee and the purchase price.

THEN add a new line and get a subsidized iPhone 5s. But tonight, get on ebay and buy a used basic phone first.

EBay would work because you would not technically be upgrading your phone. I am not sure about any other online retailers besides best buy. If you come across another please let us know. Good luck.

I really want the Note 3, but buying it outright is just a bit expensive.

If I can save by possibly finding cheaper options that are the same, i'd take it.

Too bad Best Buy doesn't have slightly used that would be discounted.
