[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Hello,

I would like to try this method, but can you clarify the sim card thing? i want to make sure it works and they haven't stopped allowing this workaround. Just a little background, I have three lines, and plan to transfer my upgrade to the 3rd line (dumb phone) to get the upgraded phone. Then put the dumb phone back on the third line and use the upgraded phone on my line which has unlimited data. Does the new phone come with it's own sim card? Should i not use this sim card and other another one from verizon? I am upgrading from a droid razr maxx hd, will i be able to just swap the sim card from the droid razr maxx hd into the new phone? (samsung galaxy note 3).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Eddie

This is my understanding for need to get a new Sim for the UDP line. The new phone will arrive with a Sim. In some cases, this Sim is already installed in others the Sim will need to be inserted. Since this phone was ordered for the line that originally had the dumb phone there is information on the card that has already been associated with MEID as well as the line with tiered data. I have seen a number of other posts in other forums where folks followed the appropriate procedure until they got to the point of activating the new phone on the UDP line. At that point, the on-line activation tool does not know how to handle the Sim that was previously used on the other line and problems developed. If you order a new Sim (or get one from the Verizon store as has been suggested), the Sim will arrive correctly pre-configured for the new MEID and line info (i.e. phone number and UDP info). This would be the same situation as buying a phone off eBay that came to you without a Sim. Any time you activate a phone, Verizon knows from the MEID what kind of phone it is, which size and type Sim is required, and if the ESN is clean. For these reasons, it is best to discard the original Sim that arrived with the phone.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ok, thank you for the quick response! Cutting time...

Are you using a guide to cut or eyeballing it? Any update from you about how it goes would be great because I have an M8 too. As I mentioned a little further up, I really want to use FoxFi with it, but seems like it may not work with the m8.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I just got an email that my order shipped out and on my verizon account it still says month to month contract. Was just wondering how long did it take for everybody's account to update?

You WILL lose your UDP if you use the new SIM that came with the phone

How can people completely miss the single most important aspect of this method.

Okay, I have tried to read through most of the pages of this thread to verify I'm going to do this correctly but I would like for someone to verify I'm not missing something.
I have two 3G phones on my account that have upgrades available- one with UDP and another with 2GB. I plan to order a 4g phone for the phone with a 2gb data plan. Once the phone arrives I will activate it and then reactivate the original phone. After a day, I will activate the 4G phone on my UDP line. Does this make sense?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

It surprised my how much I wanted this to work and how nervous I was that it wouldn't. Well it has been close to 30 hours since activation and my line is still showing as unlimited. Is it safe to say that I am through the fire or is waiting a few more days the true test?

It really was easy peasy. Oddly enough the toughest part was getting a 4g phone. I think I mentioned earlier in this thread that I had an incredibly old Droid X which doesn't operate on a sim card. Reading this forum and talking to a few members, I was told that I would have to get my hands on a 4g phone, preferable a galaxy nexus and the site swappa was recommended for purchasing used phones with clean esns. So I immediately trot over there and get a good condition phone for about $75. Well sir, wouldn't you just know that the phone just would not complete activation on the verizon network for some or such reason. I took it to 2 verizon stores, was on with tech support for at least a total of 6 hours and we tried it all. Putting it back to factory settings (must have done that about 6 times), taking battery in and out, turning it on and off, talking sim card in and out, replacing the sim card. NOTHING! Finally had enough and informed the seller of the problem and they agreed to take it back and give me my money. I went on ebay, got another nexus for a little less and BAM! I was off and running with my new Galaxy s5. It is just remarkable especially after my old slow, clunker of a phone. I have one more line to upgrade and I should be done.

Thanks to everyone and their guidance on this wonderful forum.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I received my LG G2 today from Best Buy. I took out the sim card that came with the phone. I have to wait until tomorrow to have my current sim card cut down. I was thinking of powering it up to see if I could connect it to wifi and download the lasted update or should I wait until I get my sim card cut and installed?

That is the method described in the original post but actually the step of activating it on the 2gb plan line first is unnecessary. As long as you ordered the upgrade through your 2gb plan line, you can just activate the phone directly on the UDP line when you get it. It won't effect the service on the phone on the 2gb plan and the pending activation shown online for the 2gb line will eventually disappear after about a week.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I tried to do this tonight but I backed out due to a question about insurance. I currently have no insurance and tried to add the geeksquad coverage through best buy. There was an option to add it but then on the next screen it gave the option to add it again, with the no coverage selected box ticked by default. This time when I checked the $9.99 a month coverage and then checked the agree to terms of service it gave an error from there end and the insurance option vanished.

Long story short, what do I have to do to be sure my new device is covered by insurance?

Get your insurance through Verizon they use Asurion. Once your phone is activated go to my Verizon wireless and then click on change features and add the insurance. In my opinion it's better then geeksquad as they cover loss and theft.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

i think with most insurance plans, you have a couple days to sign up.

i just did my own order today, so far so good. verizon shows my account has a new 2 year contract but so far, still showing i have unlimited data. here's hoping!

Are you saying that when the new phone is activated, the Verizon web page will now give me the option to add insurance that isn't there right now?

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Ok, I tried this... A week ago I ordered a new S5 on the best buy mobile website. I originally had the unlimited data plan on my HTC rezound and I was eligible for upgrade. I chose to keep existing data plan and went through the steps to have the phone shipped to my house. I did see a disclaimer that if I wanted to upgrade my phone that my data plan would change but from some of the other forums, other people got the same message so I ignored and went on with the order.

So I received my S5 today and i unpacked it and found that the new SIM card was already installed in the phone. In the following the steps from the original poster, I removed the new SIM and replaced it with my old SIM card from the HTC.Rezound (I had it cut using some tool I got on Amazon). Next, I called Verizon to activate my new S5.. During the steps it never asked me once to enter the number of the SIM card, instead it asked my to verify the purchase order number. I did that and next thing you know.. my phone is activated. So I log on to Verizon Wireless and check my account and see that my unlimited data plan has been changed to the 3gb plan. What did I do wrong!!! Was I not supposed to activate the phone using the toll-free verizon number that I was given? It never asked me to enter the SIM card number. How are you supposed to activate the phone? Anyways, I soon as I saw that my data plan was switched, I called Verizon and they told me the only way to get back my unlimited data plan was to return the phone to Best Buy. I am still within the 14 days so I should get a full refund. Is it safe to say that this loophole is over or did I do something wrong?

I believe all you do is just insert your "old" sim card and turn it on.

Don't call anybody! Only take your old, cut SIM and place it in your Galaxy S5.

Now it might take some finesse (firm persuasion) with Verizon to get your UDP back within the 14 day return period. Read this thread, it's been done.

If not, return the phone, repeat the process.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

It's the Razr Maxx (original). Yes, I already have the sim card and it's the same size as the one in the Note 3. I didn't realize you could activate it just by turning it on. Like I said, I really failed when I did the process. I thought the phone still had to be activated through the 800 number provided, and didn't realize it was as simple as popping the card in and turning it on. If everything goes as planned, I will be retrying this method. Fingers crossed they don't fix it in the meantime. :D

You didn't read the entire thread and/or didn't understand what you read if you did read it. No offense, just saying.

I did the same exact thing which I quoted above (from earlier in the thread). They wouldn't reinstate my UDP because it will show on your account that you upgraded your phone. I had to return the phone, get my UDP plan back after I reactivated my old phone, and then buy the phone all over again.

You screwed up by calling to activate it. You don't do anything other than put the sim card in and turn the phone on. It activates itself.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Does your contract showed it's updated on the verizon website when you switch sim cards? I tracked my phone and it's going to be here tomorrow and my contract on the verizon website has not updated yet?

Just a little bump to my question as this is the only thing stopping me from doing the upgrade at this point.

If I buy the phone from BB without insurance, will I be able to insure it through Verizon because it is a new device?
Right now I have no option to add insurance because I have a three year old thunderbolt. As I don't switch phones very often I just need someone to verify that I will or will not be able to add insurance through MyVerizon --> Change Features.

Thank you in advance

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

I don't see why they wouldn't allow you to add insurance with a new device. When I go to my features I get this option. You might want to check with big red before attempting.
