[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

UDP phone with upgrade and Tiered data phone
Line1 UDP (Upgrade available)
Line2 Tiered Data

  1. Transfer upgrade from Line1 to Line2
  2. Order smartphone using transferred upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  3. Activate smartphone on Line1
  4. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

Thanks, but my question was.....will line 2 still be eligible for an upgrade in another month if I transfer my upgrade (line 1) to it and order a phone but activate it on line 1?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Always upgrade through the dumb phone line by either using the upgrade on that line or transferring upgrades to that line:

UDP phone and dumb phone with upgrade
Line1 UDP
Line2 dumb phone (Upgrade available)

  1. Order smartphone using upgrade on Line2, select data plan
  2. Activate smartphone on Line1
  3. Pending data plan on Line2 will drop off in a week

Ok, thanks. Will this use up two upgrades, or just the one? I also see in the other thread that a guy messed it up, did he do something wrong? Also, Best Buy is currently $150 for the S5, but Verizon is $100. I saw somewhere that someone tried to get BB to price match, but it was a pain and didn't really work? Anyone know about price matching to Verizon?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

After my order was cancelled by BB, I waited 2 days and then called VzW. They verified with BB that the order was cancelled and corrected my information to "Month to Month" and "Eligible for Discount Now"

Now I need to decide, do I attempt to get the S5 again or do I wait for the possible S5 Prime announcement next week.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I went through the step recommended by roberto767
Turn on my new S4 with the old sim card.
Phone recognize the phone number from my sim card and mentioned that the upgrade is complete.
However, I cannot use the phone to call or text.
What are my options other than cancel?

Thanks,
Jm

Yes, still available, when you transfer your upgrade from Line1 to Line2 it uses up the Line1 upgrade but doesn't touch or effect the upgrade or upgrade date on Line 2.

It will only use up one upgrade to get one phone. On the other thread sounds like he lost UDP using Best Buy method. Apparently in that method if you insert the SIM that came with the phone you automatically activate and lose unlimited. I'd only use that method as last resort as if you read that thread there seem to be so many things that can go wrong if not done precisely right. I'd only use that method if you didn't have any other lines to transfer upgrades to.

Are you using a 4G sim? Try taking sim out and wiping phone. I would not call Verizon or best buy.

Ahh, I see. I thought the Best Buy method and this method were the same thing with different names. I like this method much better. Sounds safer, plus the phone is cheaper through Verizon. Thanks. I'll give this a shot today.

edit: ok, new question. So I just activate the phone on line 1 when it gets here? How do I do that? Do I need to do the SIM card swap or anything like that? The SIM card in the S5 says "NFC", does that mean the near field communications is somehow tied to the SIM card? I'm guessing the one in my current RAZR MAXX doesn't have that.

The sim comes from Droid Razr that got "destroyed" last year. I had saved the sim card. I believe it is 4G.
What do you mean wiping phone?

If the phone got destroyed, what phone were you using. If you deactivated to use another phone, they deactivate the sim card to and have to get another sim.

Easiest method to activate is just taking the SIM from your phone currently on the UDP and putting it in the new phone (assuming SIMS are the same size). Older SIMs don't have NFC which you need to use Verizon's Isis payment system. If you wan't that you'd have to use a new SIM. I'm not entirely sure but I think the SIM that comes with the new phone is a virgin SIM and you could associate it with you're UDP line but not sure. If you want to use that SIM I think you'd have to activate through the website but when I did that it just told me to use the SIM from my old phone. I think it's safest to use your old SIM from the old UDP line. Later if you want to use NFC SIM for Isis when you install the Isis app it says you need an NFC SIM and to click a link to order one. That is probably a safer route.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Destroyed as the screen split, I tried to fix it and couldn't. So, in the meantime, I saved the SIM card and activated my wife old iPhone4 on my line.

Did you use the same sim card in both?

No. Didn't know that iPhone4 could use sim card

OK. So when you deactivated your RAZR it also deactivated the sim. You would have to activate your sim back with the RAZR to get your sim to work again under UDP. Then proceed with the forum

Ok. Cool. I'm not planning on using NFC anytime soon (does anyone even accept it yet?) so I'll just use the old one. Looks like both RAZR MAXX and S5 use microSim cards, correct? So I should be good to order it and just swap SIMS?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

RAZR is unusable. I'm out of luck?

Actually what you can do is call Verizon to send you a new sim to phone that you "bought" from craigslist, pick a sim that would fit the phone you want to get. Then put in new phone.

Also try asking for a new sim from Verizon and plug it into a phone of a friends just to get the sim card registered to your account.

Make since?

Yes I think they both use microSIM. Only phones I know of that use nano-SIM are iPhones, HTC M7, M8, Moto X.
