[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Greetings all,

Quick advice if possible, I've been up for an upgrade for a while, I have 4 phones all 4s and UDP. How do I go about attempting this upgrade if I do not have a SIM card. I'm still on 3G. I really just want to upgrade 2 of the lines.

Thanks again ahead of time!!!

Btw, I'm trying to get the S5's.

You can upgrade if you don't have sims. I just did it, went from iphone4 to S5. I called verizon and asked told them I was getting phone from a friend and needed a sim for it. Told them it was an S5 and they sent me a sim in the mail 2 days later.

I'm not sure how you go about upgrading multiple lines, I think there are other threads that talk about that.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ordered an S5 for my wife on Wednesday night, she is the primary account holder on our plan. The next morning I got an email from Best Buy saying that there is a problem with my order and that I need to contact them to clear things up. I also missed a call from an unknown number which turned out to be Best Buy. I tried canceling my order on their site but it says I cannot cancel my order, the site says that when all of the items with my order are ready they will be shipped together. I tried logging on to Verizon yesterday and today to check our account but It is claiming that they are currently unable to process my request and that their billing system is down.

I've been having the same problem with the Vz website

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So I just happened upon this thread. We wanted to upgrade our UDP line. I just went onto the Verizon site and it gave me this message:

"There's a change from Verizon Wireless for unlimited data plans.
Verizon Wireless has ended this plan option, so when you upgrade you'll be switched to their most common 2GB plan by default."

So does this mean that I missed out on being able to do this?

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

When you contact Verizon to have pending activation taken off of account don't they question you to why you did not activate your new phone?

Re read the thread it has nothing at all to do with the Verizon website.

Re: Best Buy Mobile lets me keep Unlimited Data Plan on Verizon?

Update on the $50 price match from BB for the S5 that I posted on the 15th. I called in on the 15th for the price match,($149 vs $99), and still haven't received credit yet. I called BB today to inquire and she she had to re-send the price match request 'up' again, but said it shouldn't be a problem.
I bet you won't get it. They can request a price match every day, but their system will reject it.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Both 1 & 2 work. #1 is easier. Just take your old SIM and put it in your new G2. The pending upgrade on Line 2 will eventually fall off. (Some says falls off immediately, some after a week.) If after a week still there you can call to ask them to take it off. Can't transfer another upgrade to Line 2 until the pending activation falls off.

Thanks, I will give it a go. Going to try method 1. When I receive the new phone, I will shutdown my existing phone and pull the SIM. I will then put SIM in new phone and proceed with activating (which I believe can be done online via activate or switch device.) I should choose 'add a new device never on account' or something to that effect.

Should receive the phone today. I will update with results.

When you contact Verizon to have pending activation taken off of account don't they question you to why you did not activate your new phone?

I guess this is my main concern as well. I would think that they would question the fact that the phone wasn't activated on the line it was purchased for but was instead activated on the other line. We'll see I guess.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Here's my scenario folks, I hope you guys can help.

I have 4 UDP lines on a family plan (iPhone 4s). All of them are eligible for an upgrade. I would like to upgrade 2 of them to S5's without having to pay the redic retail prices. Anyone know the best way to upgrade?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I obviously should have had more coffee this morning. It was on the Best Buy site that it said that, not the Verizon website.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Per my question a few posts back - Have received my phone and turned it on with my existing (cut) sim card. An hour in my bill still indicates that I have unlimited. Looks like a success so far! Thanks everyone for the help.

Did you perform the activation online or did you simply put your SIM into the new phone, power it on and it then automatically activated/worked?

I haven't done this in person, but all the users who have done this successfully say to do nothing more than insert your current SIM and power up the phone. Using any other method to activate can cause you to lose unlimited data. And if it works, why bother using any other method of activation? It's certainly the easiest!

Oh man, that cant be good. I am waiting on the (M8) to go on sale. Hoping I don't regret not just getting the s5..

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Do these methods still work?

I used this method last time I upgraded to my Samsung Galaxy S3. (Unlimited data plan was due for upgrade. Transferred it to dumb line that wasn't...etc...)

Now I'm thinking of upgrading that to a Samsung Galaxy S5. (Going to use dumb line that is now eligible)

Actually I've never had to call,it's always fallen off by itself. For me within a week the 3 times I've done it. Some posters said it fell off immediately, most others also say it fell off within a week. In this long thread I've only seen one post said over a week it didn't fall off and they called to get it off and didn't have a problem. I suspect that one person it might have been the billing cycle but I would think it too would have fallen off eventually even if they didn't call.

Yes you just have to put in the SIM and you're up and running. Don't have to activate online through the website. Once I did go through the process of activating through the website and after the whole process it just told me to take my old SIM and put it in the new phone. I was thinking I could have just done that from the start and not have to go through the whole online process and entering the MEID number.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Ok so I have phone 1 with unlimited and two other smart phones on my plan. The Unlimited is the only one avaliable to upgrade. So just transfer it to another line via Verizon's website and when I get the phone just put my sim card in it?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Ok Ladies and Gents... so I've been lurking and wanted to give my senario. On 6/18 I ordered and s3 from best buy. I have two phones on UDP.
I ordered for the sencondary line, not the primary line. This line has been eligible for upgrade since april and was on a month to month. I came across this forum and followed the instuctions for ordering. I was super pumped, but within a half hour I got the dreaded problem email. I wasn't about to call so I decieded to wait 48hrs and have it cancel out, which it didn't. So then I tried to cancel through my best buy online account, couldn't do that either. So the only option I had was to call best buy. The first person I talked to verified my last 4 and all that info, so I was good to go. Then I was passed on to someone else who deals directly with verizon. I was put on hold for I short while and when they came back on the line I was told the s3 pebble blue was no longer availble on line and I would need to go to the store to pick it up. no no no! I was not about to do that! And have someone screw me outta my UDP! I politly cancelled my order.
I don't give up eaisly, so I turned around and reordered another, and s3 white one this time. The first go around I had $5 owed on my past bill so I paid that off before I tried a seconded time. I have no idea if this was the cause or not. Also I never did create a billing password. I kept my fingers crossed and hoped for the best. Well it worked cause in the morning I had a your order has shipped email! Sweet! This was on the 22nd and I just received my phone today!
So I took the old sim card outta the old razr maxx and into the s3 and fired that puppy up! shot gun cold booya! effen A esse it worked! Hot diggy dog still rock that delisicious UDP per myverizon web site, thanks to all you fine people here andoridcentral.
Atleast I've prolonged my UDP for another 2yrs, Now to upgrade my primary line. I post back with any updates. Good Luck and my your UDP stay with you!

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

My very first phone that i purchased was a Motorola droid. the very first one with the sliding keyboard. Then two years ago i upgraded to the droid 4. ( I love my key board) how ever it has been getting very sluggish on me and it was time for a new one. I looked up the details and sepcs for the Samsung 5s and fell in love with it.. So i decided to go to the Verizon store this past Monday and buy one. I ended up taking about 400 dollars with me because i was going to get a case and some extra goodies. I told the salesmen to convince me why i should buy the Samsung 5s. Lets just say he did a great job. I told him to wrap it up with the selected accessories. as we were finalizing the details he told me that i have to be knocked down from my unlimited data to 2 gig. I told him to HOLD THE PHONE AND PUMP YOUR BRAKES kid. I explained how i was grandfathered into this plan why is Verizon taking it away from me. I have been with Verizon since the 1990's and this is how they want to reward customers?!?!? he explained there is nothing that I could do except one thing. He told me he could do BLAH BLAH BLAH and it be 20 bucks more a month ( I stopped listening after he told me it be more each month..... I am already paying an arm and leg for my familys bill, I spend about 4 grand each year on 7 phones).. I told the salesman to take everything back ,throw it back on the shelf i am going to go home and do some research... i spent 3 hours searching looking up how to keep my unlimited data which brought me here.. I read through most of the posts and found out there was a trick. So guess what..... i ended up trying because i had nothing to lose at this point

A) Go to best buy and buy it ONLINE and have it shipped home ( Ignore the disclaimer about the U must be bumped down to 2 gig by clicking the Keep current plan)
B) They told me i wouldn't get it till after the first of July So i waited... Till i got conformation Tuesday that it has been shipped
C) I got it today and was ecstatic !!! But listen closely
  • DO NOT POWER ON THE PHONE WHEN YOU TAKE IT OUT OF THE CASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • TAKE THE NEW SIM CARD IN THE SAMSUNG s5 that it came with out.
  • Put your old sim card out that you were using into the Samsung 5s.( FROM MY OLD DROID)
  • power up
I got a message saying HEYYYyyy this number is allready activated... lets get you started with your new phone shall we!!!
I was pumped to say the least. I have been checking my data like a hawk and its still unlimited and Verizon has the phone I am using listed as a samsung 5s.

Hopes this sticks.. Good luck to everyone out there!! and thanks everyone on this forum for making my month..... unlike verzion "OH SNAP"

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I just had to post my experience. I did this upgrade thru bb.Com 2 weeks ago. Followed the instructions (BTW I'm the primary line). In a week I received the phone, did the Sim switcheroo, and voila, it worked. Easy peezy. Udp all in place, upgrade for pushed two years.

Now, I got ballsy, tried doing it for my husband's phone (second line in family plan). Did the same steps. I swear I switched the upgrade to me, but I guess not (bestbuy.com'so transferring upgrade process is a little bit trickier). Received the order confirmation, but also received the dreaded email. "There is a problem with you order, call bestbuy, etc..". Looked at my account in vzw, udp still there, but also my husband is still upgrade-able. Hmmmm. Stupid me, called the phone number from the email. They asked the same questions you had to answer during the eligibility process and they said that my order is OK now and will receive the shipping conformation soon. No talk about Udp or switching to 2g... looked at my account in vzw. BOOM! My husband's udp is gone, 2g now in place. Uh oh... called bestbuy right back to cancel, they said too late, I just had to "refuse the package or return it to the store and we will put your plan back to how it was, no problem". Phone got here yesterday, drove to bestbuy, never even opened the box. First thing lady tells me, "I can submit the return but we can't revert your plan, I've never been able to do it before" WHAT?! I told her about my call to their csr, she said he was wrong, he doesn't know what he was saying.... so after 1 hour of sitting there arguing with her in between her calls, I was able to return the phone, got my husband's udp back.

So last night I tried doing it again. First off, that screen that you get, where you choose to either upgrade your phone, replace your phone (full price) etc... it now has a blue box saying Verizon doesn't have unlimited data anymore and they will automatically switch you to a 2g data plan if you upgrade. WHOA... that wasn't there before, but I still continued. Now for secondary lines you have to do the extra step of transferring your upgrade to the primary line. What you have to do is try to upgrade your primary line it will say you can't but you can transfer. If you click on that it will bring you to another screen showing that you are transferring your upgrade and you pick which line. So I did that, went they the same steps as before and I received my confirmation email. I did notice tho that in vzw my husband is still upgradeable. I think that would be your first clue that it didn't work. Anyway got the dreaded email today.... I think I will just let it cancel on its own. I don't wanna screw myself over again by calling them.

Does this mean that this glitch in best buys system gone?

Please update this board to let us know if anybody was still able to do it after today. Sorry for such a long post and for the typos (stupid auto correct :D)
