[Instruction] How to get a new phone and keep (legacy) Unlimited Data on Verizon

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So you think a s3 and razr maxx are about the same. I've had an s3 for 2 yrs on my primary and never had any problems. Now it's just my way of thinking, But when you're only paying $1 for a new s3 that's a good deal.

As far as $1 phones are concerned, the best performance to price ratio is the LG G2. They're great phones and a steal for a buck.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Update:

Everything appears to have worked perfectly. UDP is intact and the activation pending has been dropped automatically from the Line that was used for the upgrade. Thanks all for the help.

What I did:
Line 1 UDP (no upgrade)
Line 2 2GB plan (upgrade was available)

Purchased a new phone using the upgrade on Line 2. After the purchasing the upgrade, when going to 'My Verizon' it showed that an activation for a new device was pending on the Line 2 phone just as you would expect. The new phone arrived. Turned off my Line 1 phone with the UDP plan. Removed the SIM from my old line 1 phone and placed it into the new upgraded phone. Powered it on and the first message was 'this SIM is already activated, the mobile number xxx-xxxx will be used'. Proceeded through the new phone setup (adding gmail, etc) and when done everything is working as planned.

Now when I logon to 'My Verizon' it shows the new device (LG G2) on the Line 1 number with UDP. It still shows that I have my UDP intact. The contract date on Line 2 now reflects a date 2 years from now as expected. The phone on Line 2 no longer shows the 'activation pending'. Everything looks good.

Now, all that is left is when Line 1 reaches it's upgrade date, I can transfer the upgrade to Line 2 and then purchase a new phone for line 2.

Thanks everybody.

Oh yeah, I want to point out that this was all done without contacting Verizon at all. Not once did I have to contact Verizon via phone or chat.
.

I can't wait to do this with the g3!

How long did it take your g2 to arrive?

To everyone, does this work with preordering? I'm guessing yes but would like to make sure.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I did on my secondary line, with success and I'm not the only one who has posted having success on a secondary line.

I stand corrected.

Agreed. But my main point is someone is signing a 2 year contract for a phone that's already 2 years out dated.

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

I ordered the s5 yesterday through BB.com and it's for one phone plan with 450 mins, unlimited texts and data. My bill is up to date and i'm eligible for an upgrade. The total was $167.49 and that's $99.99 for the phone and the rest is tax on the $700 retail price. It kept saying there's a $35 upgrade fee throughout the whole process but it went away at final check out. It'll get shipped to my house and so far no emails from them saying there's a problem or if it has shipped. I'll post the outcome soon.

Activation fee is on your next bill, if it shows up.

Re: [Instruction] How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

From FlyingArrow's description sounds like they did it through Verizon because them mentioned they talked to the Verizon rep on the phone. So I'm not sure it would work the same way with Best Buy. I'd suspect the SIM from Best Buy is different because they already are associated with the line because people trying the Best Buy method have reported losing UDP by just inserting the SIM that came with the Phone and powering up. At least with the method FlyingArrow described the phones gave them a chance to select which line they wanted to associate the Phone & SIM with. If going with Best Buy I'd recommend using the old SIM that are associated with the line you wan't to activate the phone on. So take your old Line 1 SIM and put it in the Galaxy S5 that you ordered from Line 2 and take the old Line 2 SIM and put it in the iPhone 5S that you ordered from Line 1. If the SIM's aren't compatible probably best to order through Verizon as FlyingArrow described. Perhaps FlyingArrow can give us a little more detail of which SIM they used for which new phone. Did they use the SIM that came with the respective phones or used the SIM from the opposite phone from which it came.

I did not switch the sim cards. Just used what came in the phones.

Re: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price.

I don't care about $35 as long as i can keep my udp. I just checked my account at vzw.com and i still have unlimited data. Then i clicked on the upgrade my device tab and it says my next upgrade is 6-28-16. Good signs this might still be working but no emails from BB. Probably because it's the weekend. I hope i get that "your item has shipped" email tomorrow.

I feel you, $30 is little to pay and keep the unlimited.

Yeah, I agree. I thought it was a bit of an odd decision also, given what else was available for the price point.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I placed my order last night around midnight and after a few hours received an email stating there was an issue. I called in to Best Buy and the rep told me something from their system didn't transfer to Verizon's system. It was too early to call Verizon and they told me to call back after they opened. I'm wondering what the issue could be. My bill is paid and I've been out of contract since February with an upgrade due. Any thoughts?

I lack patience, so I splurged and spent the 12 bucks for overnight shipping. I would imagine this would work for preordering, but I cant verify.

The only sure thought is...avoid any further urges to call BB/Verizon back. If you involve human intervention, you will stand the risk of losing your UDP pretty quickly. Just give it a week and let the order cancel itself and regroup.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

Has anyone had an issue with the unresolved switch order? I saw on slickdeals that a Verizon rep said that st some point when they review your account and see the open switch order that they will hit you with a $450 charge. He said you needed to call and have a level 2 tech remove the switch order. Not sure if you have to back and reactivate the old phone temporarily to get it removed

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

So I ordered a Galaxy S5 last week, and transferred the card from my existing Razzr Maxx. Now, I'm assuming if I call Verizon to have insurance added I will loose my UDP, and don't think you can add it online? I had removed it from my old phone because it was so old and didn't think I needed it, well now I do. Any ideas? Any past situations like this?

There's no way to call asurion directly ? Or you could get insurance through a different company. Or you could also wait until theu have open enrollment. But if there is anyone who's been successful by all means chime in :) you have I believe 30 days to add insurance so you cools wait till near the end to try also

Go with square trade. It ends up being cheaper and its better coverage.

I've added Asurian insurance after the buy on a dumb phone switch to UDP method. I called them, told them where the phone came from, they checked the MEID to confirm it came from then and was new and added it no problem. They didn't seem concerned that I kept my unlimited they just wanted to make sure the phone was one of theirs. They probably just want to make sure they weren't insuring some gray market phone from eBay or Amazon or something. Perhaps when you call to add insurance it's a different department than the one that deals in plans because they didn't seem to care.

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

I have a family plan with 3 smartphones, two of which share 2gb (light users) and the third under UDP. All three lines have been upgrade eligible and month-to-month for awhile. If I don't want to use the BB method that's been mentioned here most recently (better prices elsewhere currently), is it possible to do the following while maintaining UDP on the 3rd line:

1. Burn two upgrades on the 2 gb lines for an S5 and S4. (That person is only interested in the S4.)
2. Wait a few days, swap remaining upgrade from the UDP line to the S4 line and upgrade it to an S5.
3. Device swap the new S5 to the UDP line through Verizon's site and return the S4 to its 2gb line.

My main concerns are the initial activation of the phones affecting a device swap. I've noticed most retail outlets (Costco, BB, etc.) insist on activating the devices immediately if you buy them in-store. Would just swapping the SIMs work?

I've seen a lot of people talk about the "dumbphone" line upgrade trick, but I haven't seen anyone mention why this wouldn't work by upgrading another smartphone line. Anyone have knowledge of this?

Re: Verizon: How to keep Unlimited Data and get phone on subsidized price

This is a followup to my experience trying to keep UDP while getting my fiance a new phone. I went online to Best Buy and ordered the phone through my upgrade. There was a brief notice that upgrading would require losing the UDP but it was very small. After the purchase I checked Verizon and found that the upgrade did, in fact, go through fine and I still had UDP. When the phone arrived I took out the sim card and replaced it with the sim card from her (blech) iPhone 5 and it worked perfectly. No call to Verizon at all. Its been 3 weeks and I still have the UDP (and I also do not show the $30 "upgrade fee"). So this must all be tied the sim card that is now helping to fill a ditch at the local waste authority.
